    (2) "hng v t nhin" "natural flavor." Theo http://www.rense.com/general7/whyy.htm

trong bai "Why McDonald's Fries Taste So Good": In 1990, amid a barrage ofcriticism over the amount of cholesterol in its fries, McDonald's switched to pure

vegetable oil. This presented the company with a challenge: how to make fries that subtlytaste like beef without cooking them in beef tallow. A look at the ingredients in

McDonald's french fries suggests how the problem was solved. Toward the end of the list

is a seemingly innocuous yet oddly mysterious phrase: "natural flavor." That ingredient

helps to explain not only why the fries taste so good but also why most fast food --

indeed, most of the food Americans eat today -- tastes the way it does.

This past summer, on July 1, Taiwan enacted new laws regarding the labeling of

vegetarian foods to ensure that they really are vegetarian.

    http://www.chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/national/national-news/2009/12/08/235600/Veggie-

    meatballs.htm

The laws came as a reaction to widespread abuse of the term vegetarian. For example,

the Taiwan News Investigation Bureau, in a research study of vendors in Taipei,

discovered over 50% of processed foods for vegetarians contained meat.

With stricter laws in Taiwan, are manufacturers unloading their meat containing products

    on other countries?

Most highly processed imitation meats in the United States are from Taiwan. I found theabove link in the following article about milk, egg, and shellfish ingredients found in

    vegan restaurants in Los Angeles.

Products manufactured in the United States already have laws about labeling ingredients, but the ingredients list may include ambiguous terms such as natural flavors. The

following article begins with a discussion of beef flavor (derived from beef) in

McDonalds French fries and includes the statement that follows [italics and bold mine]:

    http://www.rense.com/general7/whyy.htm

The Vegetarian Legal Action Network recently [2001] petitioned the FDA to issue newlabeling requirements for foods that contain natural flavors. The group wants foodprocessors to list the basic origins of their flavors on their labels. At the moment

vegetarians often have no way of knowing whether a flavor additive contains beef,

    pork, poultry, or shellfish.

Heres a manufacturers description of their beef flavor and chicken flavor:

into powder form. It can be used as a stand-alone flavor or to enrich other base

    ingredients.

I realize that when the Sixth Patriarch was in hiding, he cooked his vegetables in the

hunters pot alongside their meat, and may have gotten more meat juices in his food thanour current beef flavoring. But he did not have much choice. We do. I believe that

highly processed imitation meat that is known to contain meat or that has suspicious andquestionable ingredients, such as unidentified natural flavors, should be banned from the

    pure vegetarian stores and restaurants.

    Respectfully submitted,
