Since the beginning of the year the workers have been without water for two months, without electricity for two more, and without wages be- tween April and 4 July. They say they mostly live from donations by shops, churches and charity organisations such as the ACVV and Elgin Round Table, on this 74 hectare apple and plum farm. According to Vuyani Nkasayi, head of communications at the De- partment of Rural Development and Land Reform of the Western Cape, the department acquired the farm from a private owner in June last year for R11,6 million for the farm it- self, and another R1 million for the machinery and equipment. The de- partment entered into a lease agree- ment with two co-lessees, who Nkasayi says have many years expe- rience in the farming sector. Nkasayi emphasises that the deal is not a BEE initiative. “The lease works as such; if there are people in- terested in farming, then they apply and they are kept on the database of the department and when we acquire a farm, we then interview the appli- cants and successful applicants get a lease agreement.” But, says Nkasayi, the farm has not generated income of late, and the money the department had aimed to raise by November last year to “keep the farm running”, has not been se- cured to date. Nkasayi said the department is aware of the situation on the farm. “One of the reasons people did not get paid was because the farm did not generate any money to pay them.” “They are all permanent workers, with families to support,” said Mekie Plato, ward councillor for Protea, about the 27 affected workers. Plato expressed concern about their future because they were apparently asked to go on unpaid leave from 23 June to 9 July. Edward van Niekerk, one of the two lessees who were present during a recent hand-over of food parcels on the farm, was contacted to give clari- ty and more detailed information on the terms of the lease agreement, but did not want to comment. Upon a question about the future of the farm and its workers, Nkasayi said the department will “communi- cate that when we are ready”. “We don’t know where we stand and we are very unhappy with the current situation and we don’t know what the future holds for us,” one of the farm workers said yesterday. “Something has to be done here; we receive absolutely no benefits. We have spoken amongst ourselves and believe that government should give us part of the shares of the farm as we are the ones working the land.” Farm workers of Protea Farm during a recent hand-over of food parcels. Questions people would put to MadibaSARAH VISSER

On18Julymorethan100countries celebratedMandela Day. By now itis common knowledgethat Nelson Mandelagave 67 years of his lifeto fight for social justice, and in return South Af-ricansgive67minutesoftheir time to honour hislegacy; to make a posi-tive impact on the worldand to prove that every-one can make a differ-ence.

It was the first Mande-la Day that was celebrat-ed without Madiba so on15 July we went onto thestreets and spoke to thecitizens of Caledon. Weasked them, “If youcould ask Madiba onemore question whatwould it be?”

Martha Condokterasked; “Why did yougive the country over toZuma?”

Lourens van Wyk said:“Please come back tochange the world, especiallyCaledon.”

Hannes Smal thought longand hard and said he wouldaskMadiba his personal opin-ion about the current state ofSouth Africa – not his politicalopinion.

Marianne Harris said she would haveliked to ask Madiba why he didn’t givethe country over to someone with thesame vision as his.

Jéan-Piérre Sinclair asked;“After everything that you en-dured, how did you manageto forgive?”

The mysterious case of a misplaced keyHad an illuminating experience this week. The first part thereof involvedmysecond carundergoing some cosmetic repairs to paint-work damaged when my road to town waswashed away and I had to negotiate scratchybush tracks to get to town.I must first note that in the last 10 years

or so I have been burgled about 10 times –nothing serious or life-threatening – justvastly irritating, as the burglars went for ne-gotiable items of brass or copper. This meant losing every piece of copper

pipe, brass joints, a Victorian kitchen sinktap with ivory handle, dozens of doorknobs,a yacht barometer, a kitchen thermometer,a Salter kitchen scale, a letter flap, anynumber of hinges, latches, hooks and catch-es, aChinese tray, abeautiful littleminiaturesteam ship’s engine with boiler, a showerhead, two antique copper bathroom boilersand so forth from my home. What was spared was a solid brass front-

door antique lockset with an ornate brasskey, for reasons unknown.

The key had got broken once, and a lock-smith askedme several hundred rands to fixit. It was never quite right, so I decided tomake “proper” replica. The brass shaft of a toilet cistern’s ball was

my point of departure and some brass tubingand a brass coin completed the inventory. The project took about a week, but the resultwas a splendid-looking key, artificially agedto match the lockset.Whenever I leave home, I withdraw this

key and deposit it in a special little tray inthe car door. After handing the car in to beresprayed ( on thewayhome to fetch anothervehicle) I realised I did not have the key. Istopped at the painters, but the key wasn’tthere either, gone from the door tray.Years of frustration suddenly came to a

headand Ineeded to finda culprit. Most obvi-ous candidate was the guy preparing the carfor painting so I accused him of snaffling thekey for its brass content. He denied anyknowledge of it and in a high dudgeon I wentto the police and laid a charge.

Shame upon shame, as Iwokeup last night and real-ised I had not put the keyin the car, but had left it athome. So, after going to thepolice to “de-report” thenon-theft (if that’s thename for it, andbeing treat-edasasuspectofsomethingmyself by a detective) I re-turned to the paint shop tocollect the car. There I alsogave the falsely-accusedpainter a fat reward to com-pensate him for what I hadput him through. We shookhands on the deal and allwas peace and light.Whew! Also took Suzy to Her-

manus to help a pal get anew driver’s licence, which had been lostwith his wallet.Whilewaiting for him, severalmen accost-

ed Suzy, eyeing her lustfully and offeringme

obscene amounts ofmoney to lay their handson her sleek body. Turned them all down; Imean, loyalty is [email protected]
