BEYONCE RELEASES SECRET ALBUMBeyonce surprised her fans on Dec. 13 by releasing her new album in secret, the Huffington Post reported. Soon after a brief announcement
on Facebook, the singer released her latest album “Beyonce” on iTunes. Her new album, which she calls an “exclusive visual album,” sold 80,000 copies in just three hours on the music site, the report said. The new album features 14 songs
that include collaborations with Jay Z, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. Her daughter Blue Ivy also features. Every song on the album comes with its own music video. “I didn’t want to release my music
the way I’ve done it,” Beyonce said in a press release. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready, and from me to my fans.”
Recordings for her fifth album reportedly took over a year and a half.

SURVEY REVEALS INSIGHT INTO KOREANS’ MINDSET AND VALUES IN 2013
Koreans have more pride in their cultural heritage than their economy, and their respect for pop culture has nearly doubled since 2008, according to the results of the
“Mindset and Values of Koreans in 2013” survey.
Conducted on 2,537 people aged between 19 and 79, the results showed that the nation’s cultural heritage was the biggest source of pride amongst Koreans, followed by hanbok and Korean food, Confucian values, and pop culture.
In fact, 54.4 percent of respondents felt that the development of Korea’s culture was more advanced than the development of its economy. Approximately 31.5 percent of respondents considered Korea to be a culturally developed nation compared to the 21.1 percent who felt that Korea’s economy was on par with that of developed countries. “The recent string of Korean cultural heritage (sites and traditions) being successfully added to UNESCO heritage lists, and the stories of the worldwide popularity of K-pop have brought about this perception,” said Kim Dae-hyun, a culture ministry official. The results of the “Mindset and
values of Koreans in 2013” survey, conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, were announced on Dec. 18.

2014 is the year of the horse. What news the horse year will bring and how it will play out is of a great concern for many. As we say farewell to the year 2013, let’s find out what we might expect in the coming year.
The horse in the Chinese zodiac has long been described as a symbol of power, speed, *fidelity and success. Thus, the year of the horse is considered a fortunate year that brings good blessings.
Horses are thought to be lucky animals because many important *battles were fought and won with the power and strength of horses in the past. Horses appear on various *earthenware items from the Shilla period, representing good fortune. In the Joseon period, horses were related to high social status, so people from the *ruling classes shared horse paintings with one another.
Astrologists note that the year of the horse brings high energy. They say year of the horse is a time of fast victories, unexpected adventure and is an excellent year for making decisive action.
People born in the year of the horse − in 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954, 1942, 1930, 1918 and 1906 − tend to be bright, cheerful, popular and fun loving, according to traditional beliefs. They love being with crowds and have childish innocence, sunny disposition, and natural charm that attracts many friends. A horse is thought of as a highly *intuitive animal, so people born in the year of the horse follow their intuitions.
Horses also have a carefree nature and they love freedom, so when constrained by rules, they will rebel, refusing to be restrained. Those who are born in the horse year may also like to pursue high profile careers. Speaking of high profile, there are a number of celebrities in Korea and abroad who were born in
the year of the horse. Cindy Crawford, Cynthia Nixon, Denzel Washington,
Harrison Ford, Jackie Chan, Halle Berry, Aretha Franklin, John Travolta, Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, Ashton Kutcher, Emma Watson, Josh Hartnett, Katie Holmes, Kristen Stewart, Kobe Bryant, Park Shin-hye, Bora of SISTAR and Soo-young of Girls’ Generation were all born in the year of the horse.
In keeping with horses’ energetic nature, 2014 is set to welcome *abundant international sports events.
First, the 22nd Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place from Feb. 7 to 23, in Sochi, Russia. Ninety-eight events in 15 winter sports are scheduled to be held at the event.
Second, the FIFA World Cup, an international men's football tournament, is scheduled to take place in Brazil from June 12 to July 13. It will be the second time for Brazil to host the competition. South Korea will be competing in group H against Belgium, Algeria and Russia in the tournament.
Third, the 2014 Asian Games, also known as the Asiad, is the largest sporting event in Asia governed

A million-dollar drawing by Picasso was won by a 25-year-old American for just $140 in an online charity raffle, Reuters reported on Dec. 18.
Art lover Jeffrey Gonano told Re-uters in a telephone interview that he had been looking for a picture that will go on his living room wall.
His winning ticket – picked by a computer system – was one of 50,000 to raise funds for an as-sociation working to preserve the ancient city of Tyre, in modern day Lebanon, Reuters explained.
The raffle organizers told Re-uters that buyers from France and Germany to Iran and Kyrgyzstan had taken part.
The sale of the picture was given the green light by Picasso’s grandson Olivier Picasso who said his grandfather would have been thrilled that his work was being put to good use, Reuters said.

1. Between 2011 and 2012, the advertising market saw an increase of ___________.
a) 300,000 won b) 300 million won c) 300 billion won
2. Which of the following is NOT a type of “traditional media”?
a) Magazines b) Websites c) Radio
The online *advertising market *outper-formed that of traditional media such as newspapers, magazines and radio last year, becoming the second-strongest *me-dium for advertising following television.
The global increase of internet users paints an even brighter future for the industry, which is showing *incremental growth thanks to the *diversification of platforms including new media, the Ko-rea Creative Content Agency (*KOC-CA) said Monday, releasing the latest statistics on the advertising market.
According to the report, based on re-search from throughout 2012, the online advertisement market was worth 1.66 trillion won ($1.5 billion), larger than newspapers with 82 billion won, maga-zines at 32.6 billion won and 28 billion won for radio. Advertising on televi-sion marked 2.89 trillion won. The total
size of the advertisement market has increased to 12.4 trillion won from 12.1 trillion won in the previous year.
“While the traditional print media mar-ket is declining, advertisers are finding the Internet, including websites, social media and other avenues, attractive,” a KOCCA official said. In fact, the adver-tisement market for TV, radio and print media showed a slight drop, from 3.6
trillion won in 2011 to 3.5 trillion won while that of *so-called new media rose, from 2.8 trillion won to 3.2 trillion won.
Surprisingly, the mobile sector, which was expected to show *phenomenal growth due to the fact that 2 out of every 3 Koreans own smartphones, has shown a *disappointing *outcome. Its advertis-ing market raked in a mere 5.4 billion won.
“Advertisers are still *doubtful about the effectiveness of mobile sites. There-fore, they tend to demand direct results such as the actual number of people who clicked on the mobile advertisement. It is still a tough area,” the official said.
The authorities forecast a sustained boom in online advertising, as more people are *relying on the Internet than traditional media.

The Annals of Internal Medicine of the United States said that there was no clear *benefit in consuming vitamin *supplements.
In the editorial “Enough is Enough,” Eliseo Guallar of Johns Hopkins Univer-sity said there is no evidence of a beneficial effect of such supplements on car-diovascular disease or cancer.
The article added that dietary supplements may help people *meet nutritional needs, but eating various nutrient-rich foods would be a much better choice for most people.

Following last year’s pick of emerald green, the *purplish *hue officially known as Radiant Orchid has been picked as the 2014 color of the year by Pantone Inc.
“It’s not a *primary color,” explained Leatrice Eiseman, execu-tive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It’s an invitation to *innovation. The purple family offers (an) opportunity to do cre-ative things.”
Radiant orchid was picked specifically because what it offers is in line with the current pop culture trend.
“People associate purple with creativity and *originality – and those are very valued today,” Eiseman added. “We see words like that being used to describe technologies and products that are seen as innovative and with an approach you haven’t tried before.”
In addition to what the color *symbolizes, Eiseman expects that the color will appeal to many people because it is a *flatter-ing color for many skin tones. In fact, the color has been featured in some runways and red carpet events. Eiseman notes that U.S. first lady Michelle Obama is often seen wearing this color.
Pantone Inc., a corporation best known for its Pantone Match-ing System (PMS), sets the color standards for commercial use by design industries. Korean defensive midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng of Sunderland scored an extra-time winner to give his team a 2-1 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Dec. 16.
Just two minutes of normal time remaining, in the 118th minute, Ki kept his *composure and *drilled a shot into the bottom corner of the goal. His game-winning goal came after an 88th-minute *equalizer by his team mate Fabio Borini.
The victory fired Sunderland into the semifinals of the League Cup, the Capital One Cup.

It was Ki’s second career goal for Sunderland.
Ki joined Sunderland of the English Premier League on Aug. 31, 2013.
This is good news for soccer fans here in Korea, as the Korean national soccer team prepares for next year’s Brazil World Cup and Ki is included as a player.

W hen we elect our president or lawmakers, the government allows us to take a day off from work to vote. However, election days have simply become holidays. People don’t go out to vote, but instead go on trips or relax instead. But why don’t they go and vote? It’s because
they don’t think their votes will affect the country’s politics, and they have enough things to worry about other than politics.
First, they think their votes won’t make a difference. One vote can’t change the result. However, lots of votes can change the result, and that comes from a combined number of individuals. Their opinions are applied in ballots. Voting is like saving money. Every time, you save some pennies. Repeating this a lot, those will in the end become a gigantic amount of money. An individual can only vote once, and if lots of individuals vote, it will become lots of votes that can truly change the result. Also, people in their 20s have a lot to worry about. One of the biggest concerns of university students,
usually in their 20s, is tuition. Tuition fees at Korean universities are very high, and a lot of university students have problems with money.Nowadays, teenagers and university students are not interested in politics, and that is a serious problem
because Korea might one day have a leader who does not care about what happens to our country. This serious problem must be fixed, and while the problem may be citizens’ political indifference, I think it is the government’s fault too. The government has not done enough to convince people that they can con-trol and change this country. Also, they have not tried to help ease university students’ worries.
My conclusion is that teenagers and university students usually do not care about politics because they don’t think that they can change anything even if they vote, and they have a lot of other things to think about rather than politics.

REASONS THAT TEENAGERS AND PEOPLE IN THEIR TWENTIES
DON’T CARE ABOUT POLITICS
My conclusion is that teenagers and university students usually do not care about politics because they don’t think that they can change anything even if they vote, and they have a lot of other things to think about rather than politics.
F rom the 1960s to the 1980s, students and people in their 20s used to be very interested in politics. Some gave up their lives to fight against the dictatorships. But these days, young people are busy minding their own business. The reason they are not in-
terested in politics is obvious. It is because of keen competition of entrance exams and building “spec.”Education fever was one of the main factors that led to today’s economic success. But it has now led
to ignorance of politics, because politics is of no use when studying math or English. To succeed in en-trance examinations, learning math and English is more helpful than an interest in politics. This is on the minds of today’s students and their parents.
People in their 20s are busy building up their “spec” – the list of things to add to their resume. Not only do they have to gain good scores in college and become diligent employees at work, but also they have to have a good level of experience. They don’t have any leisure time to get interested in politics. The fact that there are so many other things to be interested in – like sports, games and celebrities –
might be a reason, too. But, the main reason that students and people in their 20s are not interested in politics is because they are so busy with their own work.

Street walls, metro stations and under bridges – no matter where we go, graffiti can be seen in a variety of places. However,
conflicts between graffiti artists and the police are com-mon, and the *debate about whether graffiti is a type of art or just simple *vandalism continues. In fact, it has been an issue since the 1980s when it became popular in the South Bronx. I think that the artistic *value of graffiti should be appreciated and that it should be considered art.
Firstly, graffiti can add artistic beauty to a plain ob-ject. Colorless walls and streets can – with graffiti – be changed into *art exhibitions. No two graffiti pieces are the same, nor are they painted on the same background, which makes every painting *unique and new. As graffiti artists often paint over each other’s paintings, every new coat of paint gives a whole new feel to the bigger picture.
Second, graffiti is a great form of public *self-expres-sion. There are things that cannot be expressed in mere words, feelings that one thinks that everyone else ought to see. Because graffiti is a very public way of expres-sion, it helps one fulfill the freedom of expression. Using graffiti, people can share their feelings with others whilst changing the atmosphere of the place.
Finally, graffiti can play the role of a *canvas for artists who either lack the *economic resources or the environ-mental circumstances to display their work in galleries. Since spray paint is generally a lot cheaper than commonly used canvas paint, artists who lack the money to purchase these ingredients can use the walls as their canvas. Also, artists who do not have a good place to make their art can use the walls because graffiti does not require an art studio.
For these reasons, I believe that graffiti should be consid-ered as art rather than vandalism. Cavemen drew on walls millenniums ago. Why can’t we do the same now?

VOCABULARY
According to JTBC news, on Nov. 13, KO-RAIL found the Mugunghwa trains, Seoul’s subway line No. 1 and the Youngdong rail-
road freight trains to be covered in graffiti. There are many people who think *positively about graffiti, but there were also many *negative reactions. The police started an investigation into who painted the graffiti and whoever is found guilty will be punished for damaging *public property. In my opinion, such graffiti is just a form of vandalism, for the reasons I outline below.
First, there is a strong likelihood that graffiti is illegal. In the example I gave above, the people who painted the graffiti will be punished for damaging public prop-erty with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Art should be created within the legal boundaries. If the range of art is expanded to illegal acts, it can lead to seri-ous social confusion.
Second, if someone paints graffiti on a place that is not one’s house or building without permission and residents don’t like that, it is a grave *discourtesy that could result in resentment. If someone vandalized on your house and asked you to understand because it’s graffiti, you would be angry.
Following these reasons, I am claiming that graf-fiti is just a form of vandalism. It is hard to consider something that is often illegal or incurs resentment as art.
