presents Argentine Composer Ariel Ramirez’s

folk-inspired mass MISA CRIOLLA.

This rousing work for choir and soloists will also feature musicians from The College of New Jersey on guitar and

percussion accompaniment. In addition, there also will be works of Fauré, Monteverdi, Clausen, Sveshnikov,

Passereau, Tallis and Berlin. Proceeds from this performance will go to the programs and mission of St. Andrew’s

My friend Richard Elliott, who serves another St. Andrew’s Episcopal

Church in North Carolina, posted this wonderful photograph on his Face-

book page a few days ago. It is a view of the Highlands of Scotland as

seen from St. Cuthbert’s Way, a pilgrimage route, which he walked in

2009. Cuthbert’s Way ends on Holy Island, another holy site, where Celts,

Christians and others seeking the Holy One would pray.

The photograph made me think of Holy Week and Easter which is on our

side of the horizon right now; just a few weeks off. Can it be? It seems like yesterday was Ash Wednesday,

and day before yesterday was Christmas.

It made me wonder how your holy Lent is going. I confess, this Lent has been a struggle for me to keep. I

am too busy. Last week when I suggested in my homily that one of the enemies of repentance is our business,

the words were as much for my heart as for yours. Being busy is one way to make ourselves feel wanted, ac-

cepted, and as if we are doing something important with our lives. The problem is, if we aren’t careful, being

busy eclipses a meaningful (i.e. full-of-meaning) relationship with God.

Seeking the Holy and the Holy One is an intentional, and can be an intense, proposition. After all, showing

up with God can be awe-full. Who else sees us from the inside out, and from the outside in? Who else knows

the secret places of our hearts, and why they are secret? Who else knows what we know about ourselves, and

loves us never-the-less.

will be shaped as we usually do. Instead of celebrating Eucharist on Monday-Tuesday-

Wednesday, we will say Evening Prayer together. There will be, as part of those gather-

ings, opportunity for us to share from our hearts.

Palm Sunday we process with Palms at the 10:15 liturgy, a fun thing

with our children, and then at 5:00PM we gather in the church for Evensong. Our

Choirs have prepared wonderful settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis by Stanford, classic Anglican

stuff. Please plan to be there.

Maundy Thursday we gather for the mandatum novum, the rite of washing feet, the

“new commandment” from Jesus. We will celebrate the Last Supper, and reserve bread and wine for Good

Friday. And, we will strip the altar bare. It is a powerful remembrance of Jesus’ last night, and I hope you

will make it a priority in your life. Children, of course, are welcome.

Good Friday we gather at noon to remember the passion of Jesus on the Cross, and to cele-

brate our unity with God in the face of his death: the Holy Communion.

The Great Vigil of Easter, the first service of Easter, begins at 7:30 on Saturday,

March 30th, and concludes with the mother of all parties, a Vigil party. I am seeking folks interested in being

a part of the liturgy that night who will tell the story of Salvation History. If you are interested, please let me

know.

Easter Day we begin with the Liturgy of Myrrh Bearing Women at 6:30AM, the second service

of Easter at 8AM, and the third service of Easter at 10:00AM.

So, now is the time to stop. To look. To listen. Look within your life for signs of God. Listen to your heart

beat and know that God’s heart is beating along side of yours. Look backward at what God has done for you,

and look forward with hope.

Good Friday Offering 2013

As in the past, our Good Friday offering will go to support the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Mid-

dle East. Our Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori, sent a letter recently to all parishes

regarding this offering (see below and check the Diocese website for further info www.diopa.org). Please make

your check payable to “St. Andrew’s Church” and mark on the memo line, “Good Friday” or pick up one of

the special Good Friday envelopes located at the back of the church. We will send one check from St. An-

drew’s to the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society in Newark, NJ.

Thank you for your generosity in support of this important ministry.

Epiphany, 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I have just returned from a Christmas season visit to Bethlehem and Jerusa-lem at the invitation of the Rt. Rev. Suheil Dawani, Bishop of the Episcopal

Diocese of Jerusalem. The joy and wonder of the holy season continue to

resonate within me even as we know that the peace for which we all pray has

yet to become reality in the very same lands where our Lord was born.

In spite of the challenges, the strength and vitality of the witness of indige-

nous Christians throughout the Middle East is inspiring. To pray with and

among people for the healing of body and soul as well as for the healing of

relationships between peoples divided by history and pain brings us all to the

greatest hope we share – that a healing and reconciling witness to God’s pres-

ence and reign will bring about a durable and lasting peace for all of God’s

children. That is the foundation for a new heaven and a new earth.

The Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza has endured violence, lack of supplies, in-

adequate equipment, and funding reductions amid enormous and expanding

demand for its services. This hospital, owned and operated by the Episcopal

Diocese of Jerusalem, is a beacon of hope and healing. The Ras Morbat Clinic,

part of Christ Church in Aden and sponsored by the Diocese of Cyprus and the

Gulf, is another outpost of compassion in the name of Christ for all who need

treatment.

The Good Friday Offering provides essential funding to strengthen the visibil-

ity of the Christian presence throughout the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. That funding is critical to the ongoing ministry of both institu-

tions, as well as others in the region.

Bishop Dawani has said, “The Good Friday Offering is a tangible witness of our

partnership with our brothers and sisters in the Episcopal Church. As our

Lord’s sacrifice on the cross inspires us to live a life of selflessness, the Good

Friday Offering is an example of Easter morning where new life is found. We

are grateful for the support of this offering that assists us in maintaining the

Christian presence in the Land of the Holy One through diocesan ministries promoting peace and reconciliation, health care, education and compassion

for all of God’s children.”

I encourage you and your congregation to join me in supporting our sister and

brother Anglicans throughout the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East

through the Good Friday Offering. Our support for these ministries will en-

courage hope for the future, and light the way through dark times. The light

shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. John 1:5

Great Vigil of Easter Celebration

On Saturday evening, March 30th, immediately following the Great Easter Vigil service that begins at 7:30pm, we will gather in the Parish House for an evening celebration feast. The dining menu will consist of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. The Easter Vigil Feast is a tradition at St. Andrew’s and your help is needed to make this event a joyous occasion.

Volunteers are needed to help cook, set up and decorate the Parish House at 5:30pm, and clean up afterwards. If you are able to help or have any questions, please call Liz Lapiska at 215-321-7523 or email [email protected]. Further details and up-dates will be posted in the weekly chronicle.

Easter Baptism at St. Andrew’s

We will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Baptism across the Easter services, at the Vigil, March 30, early evening; and the second (8AM) and third (10AM) services of Easter, on Easter morning, March 31.

A Baptismal Prep Class will be held prior to the baptism on Thurs., March 21 at 7:00PM in the par-

ish house. Call the church office to register.

Baptism is open to adults and children who can honestly affirm the questions of the Baptismal Covenant, the first of which is: will you be a part of the fellowship, the prayers, and the breaking of the bread?, which, translated, means: Will you bring your child and yourself, to church? St. Andrew’s Helping the Lower Bucks Homeless Shelter

A s many of you know, the Bucks County Courier Times and Doylestown's The

Intelligencer are currently running a campaign ("Buck Up Bucks County") to raise $200,000.00 to improve the utility of the kitchen at the Homeless Shelter in Levittown (which was formerly run by the Lower Bucks County Red Cross but is now run by the Family Service Association of Bucks County). St. Andrew’s has in the past supported the Homeless Shelter by providing funds to purchase cots to expand the Shelter's capacity and reusable dinnerware to replace paper plates, dishes and cups. This is another opportunity for us to help those in our community with the greatest need. A Courier Times article de-scribing the poor condition and utility of the Shelter's current kitchen is on the Outreach bulletin board in the church and also on the parish house bulletin board. Envelopes for donations are on the shelf at the back of the church which you can leave in the offering bowl, on the back shelf, at the church office or mail to Family Service Association. Bread for the World announces

new documentary

On March 1st, A Place at

the Table, a new docu-

mentary film, which high-

lights the issue of Hunger

in America, will open in theaters throughout the

country. It will also be available on-demand

through iTunes, Amazon.com and other outlets.

BFTW is also sponsoring a new Offering of Letters.

Individuals are asked to write letters to President

Obama urging him to set a goal and work with

Congress on a plan to end hunger at home and

abroad.

More on Curbing the Epidemic of Gun Violence: “What if this time, you and I

took up this issue and wouldn’t put it down until something was done.” On Sun. night, Feb. 17th, members of St. Andrews wrote over 40 letters to senators and representatives

urging them to support every effort that is being made to curb the epidemic of gun violence that plagues

our country. If you missed that opportunity, but would still like to participate, send an e-mail to:

[email protected] - and you will be sent the names and addresses of your representatives, and a

sample letter that you can use when you write your letter.


Lenten Study. On Tuesday evenings in Lent, beginning February 26,

Daniell will lead a discussion on, “Embracing a Life of Meaning.” Plan to join

us at 7:30PM in the Parish House.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the first Monday of the month. The next meeting will be

held on Monday, March 4 at 7:30 PM in the Rector’s Conference Room (RCR) St. Andrew's

House. Please join us. The shawls can be knit, crocheted or quilted . The pattern is easy . The gift you receive through participation in this ministry is equal to or perhaps more than the gift you give to the

Aid for Friends—This important ministry provides food and fellowship for those in need in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Join us on the third Saturday of each month in our parish house to

I am sending along BIG THANKS to the happy crowd that at-tended the pancake feast on Shrove Tuesday and to extend a

special thanks to the hard working team of volunteers that helped to set up, flip pan-cakes on the grill, and clean up after the party. We had over 60 people that gathered in the Par-ish House to enjoy a delicious Creole breakfast buffet, cleaning out our larders in preparation for the beginning of Lent. It was a joyous evening and people celebrated by wearing crazy masks and stacks of Mardi Gras beads collected from years past. The food offerings were amazing!

STANDING NOTICES

Weddings

Weddings at St. Andrew’s Church will

be signified no earlier than 60 days prior

to the wedding date. All weddings in the

church will be governed by the Canons

of the Diocese of Pennsylvania and the

Book of Common Prayer. No weddings

will be signified during Lent. Before

scheduling a wedding it is imperative to

consult with Fr. Hamby.

Funerals The death of a child of God is a tender

event. Members of the church are urged

to call one of the clergy in the church as

soon as possible when death has come, in

order that they may bring the comfort of

our faith, and the presence of the church

family. It is appropriate for the funeral

of a Christian to take place in the church.

Baptisms

The sacrament of Holy Baptism is

celebrated according to the canons of the

church and the rubrics of the Book of

Common Prayer. Baptisms are part of

the public worship of the church, and

celebrated during one of the principle

Sunday liturgies. It is expected that

persons who are Baptized at St. Andrew's

Church will answer affirmatively the

questions asked in the baptismal

covenant, particularly concerning their

participation in the life and ministry of

this parish. Baptism is celebrated five

times each year as follows:

The Baptism of our Lord:

The Great Vigil and Easter:

March 30 & 31, 2013

Pentecost: May 19, 2013

All Saints Day: November 3, 2013

Before Baptism is celebrated there is

instruction of parents and Godparents

(sponsors). If you wish to be baptized, or

for your child to be baptized, please

speak with Fr. Hamby.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

The sacrament of Reconciliation

(confession) is celebrated upon request to

Fr. Hamby and as announced during

Lent.
