REFRESH - WednesdaysPrayer and Praise weekly retreat opportunity.6pm in the Church.

As we near the end of the Church's liturgical year, the readings have to do with the end times.  The main theme of today’s readings is the reality of life after death and of the relationship between our lives on earth and the life that will follow. The first reading describes a Jewish family, who refuse a Syrian command to eat pork, forbidden as “unclean” by Jewish Law.  Because of their Faith in, and obedience to, God, they endure martyrdom.  During their torture, three of the brothers speak, and each of them finds strength in the belief that he will eventually be raised and rewarded by God.

The same theme of the resurrection of the dead is the basis of the confrontation described in the Gospel. In this confrontation, Jesus ingeniously escapes from a doctrinal trap set for him and explains the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead, supported by the Pharisees and denied by the Sadducees.  Jesus speaks of God as the God of the living; He also explains that Heavenly life with God in glory is totally different from earthly life, and that there is no marriage in heaven in the earthly sense.

Know the Positions of the Presidential Candidates. Do you know where the presidential candidates stand on issues that are important to Catholics? Become informed before you enter the voting booth on November 8th. Visit www.dcow.org/DCAN for information in English and Spanish.

In the past week’s edition of The Dialog, you find Bishop Malooly’s letter, “A Call to Informed Participation in the Political Process.” You will also find a copy of the Litany of St. Thomas More, Martyr, and Patron Saint of Statesmen, Politicians and Lawyers. Please read the letter, and feel free to pray the Litany at home with your family in the last days before the General Election. This weekend, we will be praying the Litany at all Masses. The Litany is also available for download on the Diocese of Wilmington’s website – www.cdow.org

Pre-Election Prayer Opportunity:  This Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day.  In preparation for this important time, The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in our church on Monday, November 7th, from 3 p.m. to time of Benediction and Novena at 7 p.m.  Please pray for God’s intervention and Will to be accomplished for Our Nation. -Fr. Joe With the Diocesan Program called “Saints of the City,” Saint John the Beloved Parish is sponsoring a Prayer Service marking our parish and church’s anniversary, and focusing on our patronal saint. The hour long reflection, of music and scripture, will focus on the Johannine tradition. The new statue of our patron will be blessed and the time capsule will be closed and put in place. Adult Altar Servers

We are looking for adult altar servers. Perhaps you are being called by the Holy Spirit to assist in the Liturgy of the Holy Mass.

The role of an altar server is integral to the normal celebration of the Mass.

Servers can carry the processional cross and candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.

For anyone who would like to volunteer please call the parish front office (302.999.0211) to make an appoint. Fr. Martin will give proper instruction on the Mass and its parts and their meaning, the various objects used in the liturgy (their names and use), and the various functions of the server.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS

Will you please help us provide a Thanksgiving dinner for needy families? We are asking for donations of chicken, ham, or turkey. Medium to large chickens and hams are especially good choices for many of our families.

Please purchase the meat entree you wish to donate, and drop the meat off at the Outreach Office (M, W, or F, 9-10:30 a.m.), or at the Vianney House (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.). If your supermarket offers a free entree, perhaps you might consider donating the meat.

Other needed items include canned vegetables, gravy, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, canned yams or sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, cake mixes, frostings, and aluminum roasting pans.

As always, thank you very much for your generosity. Deadline for donations is Monday, November 14, but the sooner the better.

If you have questions, please call the Outreach Office at 994-7867.

CAN WE COUNT ON YOU TO SPONSOR A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS?   We have many families who need help for Christmas.  If you would like to sponsor a family by providing gifts for the children and a small gift certificate for the parents, please call Carol Costello at 302-235-8622.   Leave your contact information and the size of the family you wish to sponsor.  We will get back to you with details.  Please submit your sponsorship pledge no later than Monday, December 5th. School News Visit SJB School on the web: www.sjbdel.org

News from Mrs. Cuocolo, ECP3B class: What a warm October we enjoyed! The sunny weather put us all in a good mood to get work done! We started out by tasting pancakes for P week. In Gym, we took turns tossing a ball and catching a ball. The children worked very nice in partners. After Gym, we went to the Library to have our vision tested. The children all did a great job and waited patiently. While we waited, we played a game with pictures and beginning letters and I read a funny book about Piggie and Gerald. It was called "Waiting is not Easy". The children really enjoyed the book. It is a series by Mo Williams that my own children still love to read....might make a good gift from Santa. In center time, children worked at the Smartboard to create pumpkins, some children played in the sensory time, some sorted pompoms by color, and some counted pumpkin seeds and candy corn. I worked more on creating color patterns and Mrs. Monarski worked on creating penguins out of the letter p for our Alphabet Book that will be sent home at the end of the year. We made our final observations today on our Science experiment. We were amazed to see (we used our eyes) that the pumpkins in the water, milk and vinegar all dissolved and changed the color of the liquid to orange. The pumpkin in the vegetable oil still looked the same. Science is so much fun!

National Vocations Awareness Week Is November 7-11, 2016

First, pray for those men and women who are already in the Priesthood or Consecrated Life.  Pray for those who are in training for this ministry in the Church.  Lastly, pray for those who feel the Call to follow Christ in this holy vocation.  Discernment and following what The Lord desires of a man or woman to “Come … Follow Him” is a Divine summons and it takes the power of prayer to empower those chosen to take the risk.     Also, Support and Encouragement for those who come forward fosters what Jesus Himself has initiated.  Family, friends and the faithful create the right environment for Christ’s Calling to be fruitful.   Pray for our Seminarians………..

Are YOU or someone you know being Called?

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul members (or "Vincentians") here at St. John the Beloved would like to thank those members of St. John’s community who have continually provided financial support to us so that we might respond to those many individuals who call our parish for assistance most every day. Your dollars have been life-giving to many. The typical things your contributions pay for are rent, Delmarva Power, oil for heat, water bills, security deposits, food, mortgages and even firewood. We schedule appointments with those in need and go in pairs visiting them person to person. We pledge to maintain the confidentiality and dignity of those we serve. We coordinate, when needed, with community agencies who also have a commitment to provide acts of charity for those less fortunate. We invite you to join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We will provide you with written materials, guidance/training from a “seasoned” member who will accompany you on the visits as well as ongoing support by attending our monthly meetings. As we reach out in faith and love we recognize the sacredness of human life. At the same time we continue to learn through fulfilling these Works of Mercy that we are our brother’s keeper.

For more information, call the Parish Office at (302) 999-0211 and they will have a member of the Society contact you.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS

November 6: At this time of year we are urged to remember those who have gone before us in death. As a couple, call to mind your deceased relatives. What have you learned from each of them? In prayer, ask them to watch over you and lead you to God.

PARENTING POINTERS

November 6: It's nice periodically to remember family members who have died. This need not be a sad or gruesome task but rather a way to celebrate the goodness and lessons learned from relatives who have gone before us. Familiarize your children with their deceased relatives by creating a litany of their names and good qualities.

VOCATIONS God calls people in every day and age to serve as ministers to the Body of Christ through priesthood and religious life, so that “the word of the Lord might speed forward and be glorified.” Where do you fit into God’s plan? What steps are you taking to find out? If you think God might be calling you to the priesthood or to religious life, call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). And don’t forget to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!

This week in the Gospel reading Jesus gives us a glimpse of life after death. At that time all of our earthly needs will be eliminated, but our relationship with God will continue. Bring it Home this week by discussing as a family what it means to have a relationship with God. Do you talk to God? Spend time with Him? Receive Him in Holy Communion? Seek God’s forgiveness in Reconciliation? As a family attend Mass together and offer it for those family members who have died.

This ministry requires attention to detail and organization. Please prayerfully consider joining our team! If you are interested please email [email protected] with your contact information.

PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, Men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender.  We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace.  We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit.   Amen
