Vintage Rally and Family Fun Day Saturday 5th August 2017 gates open at 12 noon

It’s that time of year again, when the MBPFA committee are busy trying to organise a great day for you all to enjoy, along with raising money for the upkeep of its grounds and buildings. Every year we ask all the village organisations to help out in any way that they can and you never disappoint us. We have had several open meetings during the year which have been well attended and a big thank you to all for that. The entrance this year will cost 50p per child and £2 per adult. Frank Yendell will be starting the proceeding by officially opening the rally and fun day at 12 noon. We will have the usual face painting, a petting zoo, races (run by the PTA and pre‐school) and a Lego model competition for the children. Hatherleigh Silver band will be in attendance, as will Banjo Brian with his unique act which is very popular. Simon Hall will be bringing his mobile forge and he will be demonstrating his work throughout the afternoon, this should prove to be very interesting. We have the Fire Service attending which we hope will be demonstrating aspects of their emergency work which they carry out on a regular basis, e.g. car accident rescue/how to find way out of a smoke filled room. Devon Constabulary will also be in attendance showing aspects of their work. Both the previous items are subject to them not being called out on emergency work. Mr Moule is back again this year with his very popular ferret racing, so if you like a flutter, make sure you place your bets. Gillian is running the Balloon Race, how far will yours go? We are very pleased that the chapel volunteers are running the BBQ, Val will be serving up salads from the club house, the WI Maids will be serving cream teas from the pavilion and Marcia will be selling ice creams, so all your hunger needs should be covered, also the Bowling club will be running a bottle stall, St Mary’s Church will have their usual book stall and the original WI Ladies will be running a car boot on our behalf. The Sports Club licensed bar will be open throughout the afternoon for all to use, Dawn and Martin will be serving behind the bar and I am sure they will make you all most welcome, so please look around this facility and see what is available to hire for your party needs etc. We will also have the usual car boot sale which seems to go from strength to strength each year, plus the charity, trade and craft stalls, everyone likes to look around these to find their bargains for the day. Annie has been working hard contacting all the vintage vehicle owners, getting them booked in for all to see on the day. I’m sure there will be an assortment of cars, tractors, motorbikes and stationary engines, just right for the men to look around, while the rest of the family are hopefully spending their money on the stalls etc. Please be respectful to the exhibits, a lot of work has gone into making the wonderful machines that you see on show. This year for the first time we have Exeter Model Boat Club exhibiting their models in one of the marquees, this should be very interesting, so make sure you have a good look round. This is why we are holding the Lego competition, members of the Model Boat Club will be judging all entries and prizes will be given (please see separate posters etc. for full information). We have our GRAND PRIZE DRAW tickets on sale at the London Inn and from all PF committee members. The tickets are £1 each or £5 per book of 5, what a bargain!!! First prize is £100 CASH, second prize is a meal for four at the London Inn and hopefully many more prizes will be available by the time fair day arrives. If you feel able to donate a draw prize, please let Angie know beforehand, so that she knows what prizes she has before fair day begins, as it makes it so much easier to organise. A great deal of work goes into making this a day for all the family, so please support us on the day. This is our main fund raiser of the year and we use this money to maintain, insure and run the different aspects of the Playing Fields and its buildings. DEVON & CORNWALL ALERT

Fraudsters have been advertising vehicles and machinery for sale on various selling platforms online. The victims, after communicating via email with the fraudster, will receive a bogus email which purports to be from an established escrow provider (a third party who will keep the payment until the buying and selling parties are both happy with the deal).

These emails are designed to persuade victims to pay upfront, via bank transfer, before visiting the seller to collect the goods. The emails also claim that the buyer (victim) has a cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by this trustworthy third party when, in fact, It is not and the money has gone straight to the fraudster. • When making a large purchase such as a new car or machinery, always meet the

seller face to face first and ask to see the goods before transferring any money. • If you receive a suspicious email asking for payment, check for spelling, grammar, or

any other errors, and check who sent the email. If in doubt, check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller.

• Contact the third party the fraudsters are purporting to be using to make the transaction. They should be able to confirm whether the email you have received is legitimate or not.

False adverts often offer vehicles or machinery for sale well below market value to entice potential victims; always be cautious. If it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

Please be vigilant and secure your belongs as local police received information on 05/06/17 that two males in a white Citroen van (WM07 JHL) have been found looking around outbuildings in the Smallbrook area, Newton St Cyres. These males stated they are looking for old batteries and scrap. When asked to leave they became verbally aggressive.

MORCHARD BISHOP GARDENING CLUB On Wednesday 7th June members of the Gardening Club met at Bow Garden and Aquatic Centre for what proved to be a very interesting evening. Refreshments were available in the restaurant and while we enjoyed these we were given a very informative and interesting talk by Rachel on all things we needed to know about ponds and fish in our gardens. There were many questions which she was able to answer for us and we came away having all learned a great deal.

We then spent time walking around the garden centre at our leisure with many taking advantage of the generous discount made available to us.

MORCHARD BISHOP CE PRIMARY SCHOOL Osmington Bay 2017

Forty seven Key Stage two children from Morchard Bishop CE Primary School went on a weekend residential to Osmington Bay, Weymouth, Dorset. This was an action packed weekend as it included a range of outdoor pursuits. The children arrived on Friday night and after a filling tea they took part in Wacky Races or team games. On Saturday morning the weekend really got underway, after a cooked breakfast the children boarded a bus to the National Sailing Centre at Weymouth to take part in raft building. It was a great experience for the children to visit an Olympic venue from 2012. Once their rafts were completed, they were able to sail them at the centre. All the rafts floated and the children had great fun.

During the afternoon the children played aero ball and went mountain biking before finishing the day with an orienteering course. Sunday comprised abseiling, climbing, street surfing and quad biking. The quad bikes were particularly popular with the group. On Monday the children took part in problem solving and archery before a group of very tired children returned home. The weekend was very successful in many ways, a number of children overcame fears and grew in confidence, they developed team work and became more organised. It was also great to see older children helping younger class mates. The children were complimented on their behaviour many times by the staff of Osmington Bay.

Following the success of our ‘Evening Work Party’ last year we are holding another on Thursday July 6th at 6.30pm.This is likely to include tasks such as strimming, tidying and edging paths, pruning ivy, weeding and more. Our Contractors ‐ Phil and Aiden, who already do a terrific job in keeping our Churchyard neat and tidy will be there to direct operations!!

We need volunteers with Wheelbarrows, Spades, Rakes, Brushes. Secateurs, Shears and any other tools you think might be handy.

In return for your hard work we will provide some refreshments afterwards.

PARISH NEWS

The Parish Council meeting at the beginning of June had a full agenda. The guest speaker was Alex Munro of North Leigh who explained how he had boosted his internet speed from under 2 mbps to 210 mbps. This had been done by establishing a ‘box of tricks’ and an aerial at the Memorial Hall and a receiver at North Leigh which was on a sight line to the aerial at the hall. One of the side‐benefits of this is the availability of wifi in the hall. Once the technology has been proven then it will be available to roll out to anyone within sight of the hall mast or relaying beyond that point.

Having tried to have the gullies (drains) cleared in Fore Street and East‐the‐Green it has come to light that cleaning them is now on a three year rota for ‘urban’ gullies and Morchard Bishop is scheduled for a visit and drain cleaning on Boxing Day 2017. The Clerk will be taking the matter up with the local Traffic Officer.

There were a total of eight planning applications for seven properties. One was advisory under Class Q for the conversion of an agricultural building to a dwelling at Rudge Rew. A second was for the conversion of agricultural land to a domestic garden and garage at Blendon, Rixey Lane. Two Listed Building Consents (LBC) related to 3 replacement windows at Northcott Cottage and two replacement windows and a door at Farthing Park. Another LBC related to a single storey extension at Moor Farm. There is the planned removal of a sycamore tree at 5 Wood Lane which the Parish Council felt should be left until after 1 September when the bird nesting season is officially over. The final LBC and Planning Application was for a number of changes at April Cottage, Fore Street, including re‐rendering the house, erecting a new shed and gazebo, widening the driveway and creating a parking area: this caused some debate as the “driveway” is so narrow and the PC were trying to avoid setting a precedent for driveways coming onto Fore Street lower down where the road is narrow. Eventually all applications were unanimously supported.

MDDC have reported approval for a conversion of a garage to accommodation and erection of a new garage at Westbrook, removal of a fir tree at 2 Chapel Cottages, some non‐material amendments at Bugford Water Mill and discharge of conditions at the Workshop in Rixey Lane. MDDC refused permission for the installation of dormer windows at 2 Whites Cottages.

Three invoices for over £100 were authorised for payment. One was for grass‐cutting for 6 months (£366), one was for drainage at the Play Area (£1368, funded by investing in Devon) and one for emergency repairs to the Sports and Social Club (£630, funded by the TAP Fund).

Finally, the Chairman has entered Morchard Bishop in the ‘Village of the Year’ competition on Channel 4. The lead judge is Penelope Keith, so we may see her, or more likely one of her team, in the village.

My heartfelt thanks to you all for the very meaningful and beautiful words of support on your cards, letters and messages. It has meant so much to me to know that Ken was so well thought of. Sadly, towards the end of our stay in Morchard Bishop, his illness caused him to unknowingly upset one or two people, but that was not the Ken that we all knew. Recently people have become more aware of this dreadful illness but in the earlier stages it is almost impossible to recognise and therefore accept.

Thank you for your donations towards Alzheimer’s Research U.K. which will help to fund more research to help improve peoples’ lives.

OPEN DOOR David Bulley bravely came to be our speaker at the June meeting, despite having had a nasty operation to his hand, and he brought his wife with him as helper. Colin opened t he meeting with a prayer and David proceeded to speak on "Give us this day our daily bread" As a point of interest he had found that the word "bread" was mentioned 250 times in the Bible. From the manna sent by God in the wilderness, the feeding of the five thousand and the unleavened bread at the "Last Supper", bread featured in a daily and important way. So just as bread is a daily essential in our physical lives, so the word of Jesus is in our spiritual lives and we should think of this every time we say the Lord's Prayer. To remember this we all said the Lord's Prayer together to end the talk.

We then had a good social time together enjoying tea and biscuits provided by Margaret. Our July meeting on the 3rd of the month will be addressed by Diana searching for "Humour in the Bible"

Strawberry Trifle

Devonshire strawberries and cream are good in a summer trifle. For the first layer spread sponge cakes or Swiss roll with strawberry jam, amaretto biscuits, and plenty of sliced strawberries ‐ add a splash or two of sherry. Cover with a layer of vanilla custard, and top with lightly whipped double cream. Decorate the trifle with plenty of strawberries.

FOLK TALES CORNER WOOLGATHERING

Last week I went to the John Arbon spinning mill in South Molton, as they were having an open day. John talked us through the surprisingly complex process of turning raw sheep fleece in to thread for knitting and weaving. Most of his machines are rescued or reclaimed and each one is named, which gives the mill a certain atmosphere and the feel of a working museum.

At one point in the tour John had to put a fresh set of bobbins on a machine before he could demonstrate it. Whilst talking us through the process he said “I'll just doff the thread, that is, undo it or take it off...” then he paused before musing “It's always 'doff' when you remove a thread, I don't know why.” Various suggestions were put forward without any certain knowledge and I made a mental note to look it up when I got home.

Doff is, unsurprisingly, a contraction of “do off”. In much the same way, when you get dressed, you “do on” your clothes, though we rarely use “don” for anything except hats these days. That this mostly archaic term should be preserved in the textile trade is interesting, well it is to me anyway. This is partly because so much of the terminology for storytelling comes from the textile business.

Further back in history than the invention of Mr Arbon's assorted combing, cleaning, stretching and twisting devices, back when ordinary people still manufactured their own clothes, everybody could spin wool. When work in the fields was done for the day and the evening meal had been eaten but not yet digested, everyone took out a spindle and some fleece. There they would sit, setting the spindles turning and pulling out the fleece, stretching it and letting the spindle twist the fibres together. It was common for someone to tell a tale, so common in fact that the acts of telling a story and creating thread became synonymous, and so we get both “spinning a story” and “telling a yarn”.

The action of pulling the fleece to make it ready for spinning is known as drafting, which is the same as drawing, from “to draw” which means to drag or pull. If you draft your wool a lot then you get a fine thread and a longer thread from the same amount of fleece. Making finer thread will also take more time so your story might get a bit “long and drawn out”.

Whilst all women, men and children could and did spin, it took a little more skill to operate a loom. Nevertheless, once all the threads had been set up an experienced user could still work one and entertain, so “weaving a tale of wonder” entered the language as well.

Some of the old tales were collected and have come down to us in books such as the famous Grimm's Household and Children's Stories. Our lexical connection to cloth does not end here though. Before you commit your words to a page, it pays to draw out your yarn in a “first draft”. To weave in Latin is “texere” and it is from this that we get our name not only for textiles but for the written word: text.

So what you are reading is the final draft of a yarn that has been spun and woven in to a cloth of words. Finally it is worth noting that both the textile and the story process often start in the same place, with a bit of woolgathering.

ORGANIST CHRISTINE TIPPER RETIRES

For about 60 years Christine Tipper has braved all kinds of weather and narrow country lanes to drive to various churches in Mid Devon to play the organ for Sunday services. Now Christine has decided that it is time for her to retire.

Christine lived at Knightstone House, Morchard Bishop until she moved to Crediton in 1985. She went to Morchard Bishop School, Chulmleigh and Edgerton Park School, Exeter. When she was 18 her uncle, Vernon Tipper, who was Head Master at Morchard Bishop School, asked her if she would like to play the organ in St. Mary’s Church, Morchard Bishop which she did, on and off for many years. When the Revd. Brian Shillingford came to Morchard, he asked her if she would play for other churches in his team ministry. For about 19 years, Christine played for the third service each month at St. Mary’s to give some relief to Morchard Bishop organist, Susan Gales.

All in all she has played the organ for 60 years in various churches which include Sandford, where she remembers how strange it was playing the organ from the balcony, Puddington, Washford Pyne, Stockleigh Pomeroy, Down St. Mary, Bow, Colebrooke, Woolfardisworthy, Knowle, Kennerleigh and The Beacon Church at New Buildings. Many church organs have their own special challenge which Christine has managed to cope with over the years. Playing the organ in a church is not without its moments of humour. On one occasion Christine thought that she heard someone gently snoring in the church only to discover that it was an owl.

As a way of saying thank you for her many years of organ playing, Morchard Bishop organist, Susan Gales and her choir members organised an afternoon tea party in the church which was a very happy occasion. Team Rector, the Revd. Lindsey Starrs, thanked Christine for her many years of loyal service and she was given a card and lovely lavender plant.

LEGO MODELS Children are invited to make a LEGO MODEL OF THEIR OWN DESIGN to display in the Model Tent at the event to be held on Saturday 5th August 2017. There will be two age groups 5 ‐ 10 years and 11 ‐ 15 years.

Models should be plainly marked with the child’s name, age and contain a brief description of the model. Models will be judged and a prize awarded for the best model in each age group. Tesco Store (Crediton) have very kindly agreed to donate the prizes. Models should be taken to the Model Tent by 1.30 pm on the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded at around 3.30 pm.

NOW FOR THE ADULTS ‐ As well as the children making lego models what about adults in the Village either making a model of your own design of constructing a model using a model kit. These models can be in wood or any suitable material. A model can be anything that is a scaled down version of an original object e.g. boat, car, tank, helicopter, train or anything that would fit into the model category.

CANNABIS COULD BE GROWING WILD ACROSS DEVON, SAY POLICE

Police say wild crops of cannabis could be growing in fields across Devon after they found a second plantation within seven days. A week ago police found cannabis growing in a field in Tamerton, to the north of Plymouth, and have now found another east of the city in Plympton. PC Greg Rendle, neighbourhood beat manager for Plympton, revealed he and a group of Special Constables ripped up more than 20 cannabis plants growing in a field of Plympton Hill, reports Plymouth Herald. "It was quite off the beaten track, about half a mile off the main road, so it was well hidden. We had some Specials from Crownhill police station attending a rural engagement day around the Plympton area so I thought 'well, this job's rural, they can come and help me'.

THREE, TWO, ONE… LIFT OFF, AT LIGHTHOUSE HOLIDAY CLUB!

As the sun increased in strength in mid‐Devon during the May Half term break, so did the excitement at Morchard Bishop Playing Fields. Around 80 primary school children went ‘above and beyond’ and endorsed the space themed three days; filled with fun, craft and action songs. The marquee was transformed into a decorative galaxy, with boulders, planets and astronauts. The children were welcomed each morning to explore their mission manuals, drawing pictures of what is through the ‘space‐e‐scope’! The two teams – comets and meteors‐ competed against each other, with the help of their leaders, in games such as ‘star quest’ where valuable points could be earned. Points were also given for ‘space’ mail (jokes and prayers) as well as bringing along a friend. At the end of each day, a leader from the losing team was gunged in the gunge tank‐ so the stakes were high! Neil Armlong visited the children each day, delivering a message from a space rock, which helped everyone explore the day’s memory verse from the Bible. These also appeared, in shorter versions, on the craft each day, when the children enjoyed making and decorating their own secret space wallet, flying saucer spaceship and jetpacks. It was fun to hear each jetpack exclaim ‘God is above everything and beyond our imagination‐ 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 whooosh!’ Once again, the team in the Lighthouse Café served delicious homemade cakes and welcome refreshments each day enabling coffee, cake and conversation to be shared amongst parents and friends. Many parents attended the family ‘space time’ at 3:30pm on the Friday when high tea was served to all, whilst photographs of all activities were shared. During the family space hour, both leaders and children shared some of their highlights from over the three days. We all reflected together, how God is above all things, yet still close and present. The final points were calculated, announcing the meteors the winners!

On the Thursday evening, 33 secondary school teenagers from across the area joined in the Lighthouse Youth event: an ‘Evening with The Sense and The Stance’ (a Christian street dance and band from Birmingham). The evening consisted of both song and dance performances and included lots of fun participation!

The Lighthouse Club Team, made up of volunteers from churches of different denominations around the area, would like to thank Morchard Bishop Sports and Social Club for allowing their premises to be used. Thanks go to Devon Christian Youth Camps once again for the use of their marquee and equipment and of course, to our fantastic Pulse Ministries Team ‐ it was a privilege to collaborate with you.

Our speaker in June was Sue Ashmole on the Cadenza Alpacas. We learned so much about these adorable animals. In their South American habitat they have far more sunshine than we do , so when they are kept in the UK they have to be given extra vitamin D, otherwise they suffer from skin conditions and the alpaca version of rickets. They are a herd animal and highly sociable, and so you can never keep just one on its own as it will pine away and die. They are shorn once a year and their fleece is very soft and fine. They can have one pregnancy per year, the babies are called cria. They are pregnant for 11.5 months, but this varies slightly because they will only give birth when the conditions are perfect. i.e. not raining, and not after 4pm so that the cria will not be eaten by night hunters. They are highly intelligent and sensitive and are capable of guarding a flock of sheep. A group of them working together can kill a fox if it threatens their charges.

Cadenza Alpacas are situated in Little Torrington and Sue has gradually built up her flock to 14 animals. She welcomes groups with a minimum of 6 and serves cream teas. She has some stud males (machos) and breeding females (hembras).

The speaker in July is Sue Knox from the Devon Historic Buildings Trust on the Haldon Belvedere Tower. Our July meeting will be held in the London Inn skittle alley as the school is performing a play in the memorial hall. All welcome.

MORCHARD MAIDS

For our May meeting, Morchard Maids had an exciting evening visit to Spotlight Studios in Plymouth! This was kindly organised by Mandy Tapp. We arrived by minibus after having had tea and cakes at the Station Cafe in Crediton, to be met by BBC South West Regional Manager, Leo Devine.

We were treated to a fantastic, behind the scenes look at all aspects of the evening broadcast and to meet the presenters ‐ Justin Leigh and Victoria Graham! They answered all our questions especially about managing the autocue and earpieces. Many of us could not resist the opportunity to sit in the "newsreaders chair" and have a photo taken! Leo also guided us round the Radio Devon, News and Weather Studios. Also one of our members who is a regular listener to Radio Devon's late night music programme, got to meet the presenter, David Sheppard, in person.

We will all watch Spotlight differently from now on!
