Edgewood ISD Staff,
It’s hard to believe that the spring season is
here and we are close to the end of another
successful school year. Every single day it
is you, our Edgewood ISD staff that makes a
difference in the lives of each and every one
of our students. We cannot thank you enough
for all that you do for our district. The school year has been filled with
numerous achievements we should all be proud of and we have faced
our challenges never forgetting the reason we are here – our students.
I am very proud of our Edgewood ISD team.
Chief Kenneth JacobsSuperintendent Designee
Dear Edgewood Team,
This has to be the best time of the year
for educators and the many talented people
that provide the best support services for
our students. The many initiatives, which
we have taken on, are now coming to
fruition. The strategies for improvement in
student achievement are implemented and
monitored. Now, our students are in charge and ready to show what
they know. We are proud of their accomplishments and anxious
to learn of the results. Our students have also shown their ability
to excel in athletics, music, theatre, dance, UIL events, career
competitions, and robotics to name a few. These accomplishments
are the results of students, teachers, and families working together.
As we close out the year as educators, the words of Robert Louis
Stevenson are appropriate, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest
you reap, but by the seeds you plant.” Throughout the year, you
have planted the seeds of learning and your students have reaped
the benefits.
Thank you for everything you do for our students!

More than 700 Edgewood ISD second grade students
received dental screenings, protective sealants, and
fluoride rinses during a free dental clinic held in conjunction with
the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile® national
event and National Children’s Dental Health Month. The event
took place at the School of Dentistry at the UT Health Science
Center San Antonio. This is the 13th year the School of Dentistry
at the UT Health Science Center provides preventive oral care for
EISD students. There was no cost to the students for the services.
Hundreds of elementary school students were treated to a
concert thanks to The San Antonio Symphony who performed
one of their “Young People’s Concerts” at the Edgewood Fine Arts
Academy Theater. All EISD elementary schools were invited to be a
part of a series of concerts performed by the symphony titled “Czech
Masters.” The concert, which was free, highlighted Czech composers
and their contribution to American music. The students in attendance
watched and listened attentively as the musicians performed. They
also learned about music history, and even got to listen to an Oompah
Band, also known as a German Polka Band.
Edgewood ISD was the only district in the San Antonio area that the
symphony visited. Jeremy Brimhall, the Education Director for the
symphony worked with Dr. Emma Dromgoole to coordinate the visit.

SCHOOL NEWS. . .
Parents, family, friends, as well as students and Edgewood ISD
administrators and staff, enjoyed a night of music and dance
thanks to the musical Fiddler on the Roof which was performed at
the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy February 17 & 18, 2016. Prior to
opening night, students from Gus Garcia & Wrenn Middle Schools
attended special performances of the musical. Eighty Academy
students worked many long hours in preparation for the shows. They
were tirelessly supported by four Academy staff members: Claudia
Casso - Director/Choreography; Vanessa Osburn - Vocal Director;
Don Nunez - Costume Design; and Robert Ramos - Theatre Manager/
Set Construction.
Thanks to students from both Edgewood ISD high schools, there
will be some new food items on the menu for the upcoming
school year. On Feb 17, 2016, a panel of students met at Memorial
High School to participate in a food testing. Ten students from
Kennedy HS and ten from Memorial HS tested several items that
included Orange Chicken, Sausage and Supreme Pizza, a pulled
pork sandwich, a Carne Guisada product and Chicken Smackers.
After several bites of the samples, the students voted on what they
liked best and the results are as follows: The majority ruled they did
not want the orange chicken on the menu. The students really liked
the sausage and supreme pizza’s and would like to see them on the
menu. The panelists also agreed on having the pulled pork item,
which would be served on a bun. Only half of the taste testers agreed
on having the Carne Guisada on the menu, but all agreed on having
the Chicken Smackers with different dipping sauces, especially the
Siracha sauce and the Sweet Red Chili sauce. The new menu items
should appear on the menu for the 2016-2017 school year.

youtube channel
Dinosaurs big and small visited Gonzalez Elementary School
thanks to the traveling exhibit known as Dinosaur George.
The school’s gym was transformed into a museum where students
spent time learning about the dinosaurs that roamed the earth millions
of years ago and the fossils they left behind. “Well the company I
founded 18 years ago as a way to bring science into all communities
throughout Texas” said George Blasing founder of Dinosaur George.
Students of all grade levels were able to enjoy the exhibit as well as
participate in games such as a scavenger hunt to learn more about
these enormous creatures that once roamed the earth. “We were
really excited when the principal of Henry B. Gonzalez invited us to
come into Edgewood” added Blasing. The fun was not only for the
students, The Dinosaur George exhibit was also open to parents and
the community.

On March 2, 2016, From
coast to coast, more than
45 million readers, both young
and old, were gearing up for
the nation’s largest reading
celebration--the National
Education Association’s (NEA)
Read Across America Day.
Here in Edgewood ISD, parents,
teachers, education support
professionals, students, and
elected officials did their part to
deliver the very important reading
message: Kids who read, and
who are read to, do better in
school and help build great public
schools.
Launched as a way to get kids
excited about reading, NEA’s
Read Across America has grown
into a year-long program that
culminates every year on or
around Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
Read Across America has
become a yearly tradition
through-out Edgewood ISD and
the students and community take
an active part in this celebration.
Whether it is donating books to
the local library or encouraging
your own children to pick up a
book and read, everyone can do
something to encourage reading.

Gabriela de la Torre, Madeline

Gloria Terrazas for being chosen
as the 2015 – 2016 winners in the
Congressional App Challenge.
The idea came about because
of the realization most learning
done today by many young
children is through apps. It
took the students a little over a
month to create and to add some
additional time to learn how to
use the coding program. Each
level another question would be
added to the story and a new
game would be unlocked. And if
that weren’t enough, Madeline
also created a website, just in
case the video was not received.
The girls received congratulatory
messages from Congressman
Joaquin Castro, as well as
certificates acknowledging their
win. CONGRATULATIONS!
Close to 600 fifth graders from Edgewood ISD attended a
conference in January at the UTSA downtown campus. This
conference focused on “smooth transitions” from elementary to
middle school. Edgewood ISD Administrators collaborated with the
University of Texas-San Antonio Office of P-20 Initiatives to co-host
the Transitions Conference. All ten EISD elementary campuses
attended the forum. The students were able to attend several sessions
that included information on developing good study habits, choosing
the right elective, making great choices, and the importance of higher
education. Students also heard presentations from School Board
Members, Edgewood ISD Administrators, and UTSA personnel.
