Types of ships

1. Commercial Vessels: Divided in to cargo ship, passenger ship

& special purpose ship Cargo divided into 4 groups: • General Cargo Vessels : for food,

furniture, garments, footwear etc• Tanker : for petroleum products• Dry bulk carriers: carry coal, grain, ore

etc• Multi purpose vessel : for liquid & general

cargo at same time

• Passenger ship: Includes ferries & ocean liners• Tugboat : It moves vessels in a crowded harbor or

narrow canal, barges, oil platform

2. Naval Vessels

Modern naval is divided into three, modern warship is divided into seven & Battleship into eight category

• An aircraft carrier: for deploying & recovering aircraft act as a seagoing airbase

• A frigate: to protect other warship & marine

3. Fishing vessels: Subset of commercial boat & categorized in seven criteria

Branches

1. Ratnagiri: Situated at 375 kms south of Mumbai & this yard is the oldest of the company. It is capable of fabricating & erecting 14 vessels of various sizes

2. Mumbai : The Ghodbunder yard spread over 12 acres of land & equipped with 4 slipwaysfor building hulls upto 125m length

3. Goa : This yard spread over 5 acres of land & is owned by Pinky Shipyard Ltd. It has facilities of building vessels upto 5000 DWT & upto 140m in length

4 Kolkata : It is spread over 7 acres of land & has capacity of building vessels 125m in length & 22. in width

5. Dabhol : It is spread over 300 acres if land. It can built Jack-up drill rigs, Offshore structure & ships upto 100000 DWT. It has one of the largest floating docks of about 155m. * 40m. Having 16000 tones capacity

6. Mangalore : It is located in Kundroli west with an existing 28.3 acres of land. It has production supply vessels of 2900 DWT

Stages in the process of ship building1. Bid proposal

broad design of the ship based on basic specifications. It is a very important step of the business.

2. Discussions on the Specifications and agreement

ship price, shipbuilding process, genral layout, specifications, etc are determined and agreed upon.

3. Performance Design

speed is the most significant factor of any ship. It ensures speed specifications by adjusting the hull form and tank testing.

4. Basic Design

other factors like load capacity of cargo, ship stability, fuel cost, etc to be complied with the specifications.

7. Material Ordering

planning is necessary to control and supervise the flow of materials, work volume, job assignments and subsequent progress of the shipbuilding process.
