On the 4th of June, Li-Na won the French Open I was moved as

that happened to be a day of turmoil 22 years ago in China. It is

the first time that a Chinese national wins a Grand Slam title; this

is a very encouraging indication that elite tennis players from China

are catching up the international standard. Despite I am not a tennis

fan, I am so proud and joyful of Li-Na achievement. Moreover, during

the post-match interview she thanked a number of people who

had helped her in her sport career. Unlike many other champion

winners who just gave some official thanks to government support

and development. I really appreciate this truthful facet of Li-Na

in pursuing her personal dream and speaking out candidly on

success. I hope Chinese at different time in different places could

speak up as truthful as such.

It is the fundamental responsibility of every government to promote

sport national-wise so as to strengthen the body and mind of her

people; this is no big deal. All national leaders are also renumerated

for doing what they are paid for; it is nothing too harsh and in

democratic society they are called public service. So channelling

resources to elite sport training is not a giving, and any notable

outcome is also in the name of the nation. Hence I do not feel it is

compulsory for the winning sportspersons to give all credits to the

government.

Of course there are exceptional cases where in an underprivileged

country much special effort has to be made to deliver resources in

national sport training. This however is not the case of China on the

road of becoming an economical superpower. Li-Na s reaction

in the award ceremony was just a good reflection of China s

new era in moving from an underprivileged position to the leading

world arena. We should be delighted to see Chinese taking on

top international sport positions by their own effort rather than just

counting on government selection, support and training. We should

move on from the unrealistic notion of the government is the only life

line for everyone in every frontier.
