Notes From The Pastor's Pen

Happy Easter, still In case you weren’t aware there is Easter day (last Sunday), the octave of Easter (from last Sunday through this Sunday), and then the entire Easter season (from Easter day through Pentecost). But there is another day that we are celebrating this Monday that is a little out of place, the Feast of the Annunciation. The Feast of the Annunciation is one of those days that we might not remember the date immediately, but we can calculate it pretty quick. Since it is the Annunci-ation of Christ, it falls nine months before Christmas, so March 25th. But Monday is April 9th, that’s over two weeks late. The reason is because we had a few other days that took priority. First there was Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week, then the Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, and then the Octave of Easter. Smaller feasts such as the feast of St. Vincent Ferrer (April 5th) or St. John Baptist de la Salle (April 7th) were suppressed this year, but the Annun-ciation needs to be celebrated, even if a little late. I have always considered that the fact that the Church has celebrated the Annun-ciation beginning in the Gospel of Luke through the centuries as being such an important sign of our consistent respect and understanding of life beginning at conception. This feast, that is now officially called “The Annunciation of the Lord”, had been referred to up to 1969 as “The Annunciation to the Virgin Mary.” This was the moment when Mary said yes to God. That Christ’s life as man began. This isn’t a practice that has just become popular in response to changes in birth control and laws on abortion, but rather demonstrates our consistent under-standing of life, how we participate in this incredible gift from God, and the responsibilities that come with that participation. As we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation we should be grateful for God’s gift, for Mary’s acceptance, and for all life and those who accept God’s gift and accept the responsibility of caring for this new life they have been given. And in case you were not able to be at the Easter Vigil last week I just wanted to let everyone know that we welcomed into the Church Laurie Hoff as well as celebrating her Confirmation and First Communion, welcome Laurie. Peace, Fr. Nick

Parish School of Religion Update

Beginning this week students in 4th through 8th grade will be participating in a pro-gram that is for all Archdiocesan PSR students, In God’s Own Making. The whole program is about helping kids to see their true dignity as children made by God. A component of the program is making good decisions about our bodies and life in general. Our gift of free will from God makes it imperative that all of us devel-op a good sense of self and the ability to make good decisions for ourselves. It then is important for children to practice making good decisions for themselves as they grow under the guidance of their parents. The Catechism tells us that every time we choose good over sin we strengthen virtue in our soul. It is im-portant that we give children the knowledge they need to make good decisions, but we also have to give them the opportunities to make decisions.

There will be an act of consecration to Mary on April 9, the Feast of the Annunciation, following the 12 noon mass.

Please try to be present for this very special devotion.

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me

according to your word.”

This is prime me to do some spring clean-up and plan ng for our beau ful St. Joseph’s garden and yard so we can enjoy the gardens all summer. In the past we have always had a wonderful turnout for St Joseph’s cleanup. It has been fun whether you can spend a half hour or the whole morning and we get to meet and greet others from our parish.

With minimal work we will have a perfect garden to enjoy this year’s garden beauty!!! But that means we need help. We are planning to work on Saturday, April 14th, beginning at 9:00 am — un l noon. Any me you can share would be most appreciated.. Please consider helping for spring cleanup. And if so inclined, we will con nue to have li le plots of the ground that you may wish to do weeding or trimming for the en re gardening season.

We welcome all.

Married Couple’s Retreat Running the Paschal Mystery—

The Way of Love An Ignatian, Semi-Silent Weekend Retreat

August 17-19, 2018 (Friday evening to Sunday lunch)

Love thrives when it's cultivated. Every marriage goes through stages of love--romance, disillusion-ment, misery, reconciliation and generativity. Each has it own challenges and rewards. It is never too

early or too late to nourish your marriage. This up-lifting weekend will be mixed with talks, prayer, and dialogue with your spouse and practical tips to keep your marriage growing. There will be plenty of time for reflection and enjoying the beautiful grounds of

the Toddhall retreat center.

Our facilitator, Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson, will share his passion for narrative theology to connect life sto-ries with The Story of the birth, life, death and resur-

rection of Jesus. Through storytelling, poetry, and humor, Terry will encourage us to enter more deeply into the mystery of grace, the mystery of spirit, and

the mystery of God.
