Transfiguration of The Lord Page 3

August 6th, 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I continue where we left off last week with the greeting of the body at the doors of the

church for the Funeral Mass. The family with the pall bearers wait at the doors of the church for the priest to bless the body and to cover the casket in white garment (pall) and the crucifix is placed at the head of the casket. All this is to remember when the deceased was first welcomed into the Church at bap-tism. Then the body is brought into the church. From this point on, the Mass is celebrated in the usual fashion. Some have requested to be cremated – that is to have their body incinerated into ashes. This is permitted by the Church. If, then the body is not present, but rather, the ashes, then the Initial Rites are omitted and the ashes may be placed in an appropriate place near the sanctuary in the church before Mass begins. Under what conditions does the Church permit cremation? This is one of the ques-tions that prompted me to write this series of articles. Cannon Law (the law that governs the Church) states: The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed. However, cremation is not prohibited unless it is chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine. (Can. 1176.3) It is further explained – An example of a reason for choosing cremation contrary to Christian doctrine would be the denial of the resurrection of the body. When cremation has been chosen… the remains of the deceased (the ashes) must always be treated with respect and placed in consecrated ground (that is a blessed cemetery plot). (NCCC Guidelines) More on this issue next week.

Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Fr. Steven Guitron

Agosto 6, Decimoctavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

Padre Esteban Guitron

Back to school safety tips

There is a lot that goes into preparing for the new school year, and it’s important to remember to talk about safety. These are a few tips to consider: (1) meet all of your child’s teachers, (2) discuss school bathroom behavior (no one should go into a stall with a child for any reason), (3) occasionally walk your children to their class instead of using the carpool line. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Three Things that Simply Must Be Done” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.For upcoming Virtus Training: http://virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_list.cfm?theme=0
