Many historic producers are part of the association, including Castello di Magione in Umbria, on the banks of the Trasimeno Lake, and Sugarella in Viterbese, whose ancient origins are documented as far back as the XII and XIII century. Other Umbrian producers include San Giustino di Piccione, San Benedetto di Mugnano, San Sigismondo, Marsciano and Brufa. In Veneto’s Treviso province are Giavera del Montello and Nervesa della Battaglia in Montello, where the Prosecco DOCG grapes for Villa Giustiniani are grown. Rocca Bernarda, located in the Eastern Hills of Friuli, completes the group.

astello di MagioneDating from 115-1170 AD, the magnifi-cent estate was built as a hospital for

pilgrims travelling to Rome or Jerusalem on the Francigena road. In the oldest part of the castle is a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in the Roman style, with two beautiful frescos from the Pinturicchio school (XVI century) rep-resenting the Virgin and child, Saint John the Baptist and Saint James, patron and protector of the pilgrims. On numerous occasions Pontiffs and sovereigns stayed in the castle, and it was there that the conspiracy against Cesare Borgia, cited in Machiavelli’s famous political work The Prince, was conceived.

he vineyards of the Castello di Magione Winery fall into the ‘Colli del Trasimeno’ (Trasimeno Hills) DOC and reach an altitude of between 250 and 350 me-

ters in the hills behind Lake Trasimeno. They were recently renovated, with a planting density of 5,000 vines per hec-tare. 55% of the land is planted in red grapes, including Pinot Nero, Merlot, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Canaiolo. The remaining 45% is used for white grapes, predominantly Grechetto, as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Trebbiano. The Cantina of Castello di Magione was inaugurated in September 2009. It is 1,300 square me-ters large with a vinification capacity of 4,000 quintals of grapes. Its facilities are equipped with the latest, most inno-vative technologies for processing, packaging and storing the wines, and the cellars used for aging the red wines in wooden casks are also located here. The estate also produces extra virgin olive oils from the 24 hectares of olive groves on the property. Here, the cultivars most historically represented in the areas of Umbria and Trasimeno olive growing are raised: Dolce Agogia, Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino.

Monterone Colli del Trasimeno DOC Grechetto

Grechetto is the oldest native white Umbrian grape, and it is on this particular variety that the winemakers at Castello di Magione focus much of their attention. They have developed a careful selection of clones, locating them with Grechetto from Todi (G5) and Orvieto (G109).There are thirteen hectares of vineyards of clay and sandy soil, a good percent of pebbly composition and optimal sun exposure, planted at a density of 5,000 vines raised with the Guyot system. From this comes Monterone, one of the best Umbrian Grechettos. The grapes are harvested by hand when perfectly ripe, and the wine rests for five months on the lees. Its colour is straw yellow with golden highlights. The bouquet is fully floral and delicate; in the mouth it shows great structure, elegant flavour and freshness, excellent acidity and remarkable persistence. It is ideal with cured meats and superb with seafood dishes and white meats.

occa Bernarda is one of the oldest wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and features the most magnificent panorama of the region.

It is set in a traditional Italian landscape of ancient cypress trees and breathtaking scenery overlooking the elegant and sinuous slope of the vineyards, at the centre of which lies the winery. It was in this ideal setting in 1567 that the Counts of Valvason Maniago erected the residence, an architectural masterpiece. Though the construction is often referred to as a castle it is actually a villa, a refined family residence with the simplicity of a country house open to nature. Rocca Bernarda was created as a country residence, uniquely positioned in the beautiful surrounding landscape. An impressive access road lined with ancient olive trees and rose bushes leads to its sophisticated elevated courtyard. There, in place of the expected dark,

medieval space, lies a beautiful terrace. It features a small Italianate garden bordered by boxwoods and overlooked by the elegant windows of a beautiful orangery. The courtyard, defined on two sides by residential buildings, opens onto a beautiful view of the countryside, extending from the hills to the city of Udine. Its vineyards occupy approximately fifty hectares, most of which are planted at a density of 5,500 vines. Plants are obtained by both cloning and massal selection, ensuring optimal quality, as vines are already acclimated to the area. Special attention is paid to sun exposure; red grapes and Picolit are located on the southern slopes, while the eastern or western exposures are assigned to aromatic varieties. Eleven different types of grapes are cultivated on the estate.

Picolit: The Vineyard

Page 24: SAGRIVIT BROCHURE ENG

Picolit Friuli Colli Orientali DOCG

Rocca Bernarda was instrumental in the survival of the Picolit grape, the jewel of Friulian enology. Giacomo Perusini, after having replanted the first cuttings of Picolit in the late nineteenth century, wrote a treatise, ‘Picolit’, in 1906, in which he expounds on its various clones, techniques of cultivation and winemaking. Thus Picolit grapes, which had reached their highest levels of appreciation a century earlier with Count Asquini Fagagna, found a renewed place in the vineyards. Today they are harvested by hand in the last days of October, then placed on drying racks in a ventilated room for approximately one month, until sugar concentration reaches the desired level. During this period, a rigorous manual selection is done to remove any moldy or spoiled fruit. After pressing, the fermentation takes place slowly in wooden barr-iques and terminates spontaneously with the first winter cold, leaving a fairly high residual sweetness. A subsequent phase of yeast maturation and bottling 18 months after the harvest help ensure the longevity of the Picolit wine.

Villa Giustiniani

Page 31: SAGRIVIT BROCHURE ENG

illa Giustiniani-Recanati is situated in Spresiano, at the center of the Treviso plain. Here the plain is crossed by the Piave River, which widens to run through the open and fertile countryside

after Nervesa della Battaglia. Once belonging to the Dauphin, Villa Giustiniani-Recanati was erected toward the end of the XVI century and reflects the era with its simple, elegant lines. It is beautifully situated within a vast park, part of which has been restored as a tourist destination, where art and nature blend together in the beautiful Chapel, the grotto and the small lake. The compound recalls the elegance of the century, and comprises an area most reminiscent of ancient Spresiano. The farming activity that takes place in the territory occupies an area of 410 hectares. Excellent cultivation includes innovative plantings dedicated to fruit orchards, with pear and walnut trees throughout the vineyards. At Giavera del Montello and Nervesa della Battaglia the vineyards occupy 20 hectares in total, eleven of which are dedicated to the Glera vines, a grape used to produce the sparkling Prosecco DOCG Colli Asolani.

NOVECENTO ANNIVERSARIO 1113-2013With the Papal Bull of 1113 approving the foundation of its hospital in Jerusalem, the Sovereign Order of Malta became a lay

religious order and in Feb. 2013 celebrated 900 years of service to the sick and needy. In recognition of this tradition of noble and honorable service, we have produced three limited-edition wines created on our Italian estates: a superb red blend of

Merlot and Sangiovese from Castello Magione, a crisp, refreshing white blend of Friulan native varieties and a limited-edition red made from the rare Pignolo grape from Rocca Bernarda.

Novecento PignoloNovecento Anniversario Pignolo is made every year from wines of the rare Pignolo variety. The grapes

are grown on the terraced vineyards “ronchi” of our Friuli estate, Rocca Bernarda, which has long been a point ofreference for Friulan enology. The development and promotion of this unique variety, which had nearlybecome extinct, is proof of Rocca Bernarda’s desire to support the native products of the Friuli region.

It is considered one of the noble Friulian reds, and its structure, elegance and balance make it particularly suited to aging.

Novecento Rosso Umbria IGTA well structured and complex red can surely be positioned among the premium quality segment of Umbrian wines. This

superb blend of Sangiovese and Merlot is made from unique grape varieties grown in Umbria, the heart of Italy. And it is here in Umbria that the magnificent medieval castle, Castello di Magione, was first built as a hospital for pilgrims travelling to the

Holy Land in the XII century. Wine production there began during the Middle Ages, and it remained an important influence in the history of viniculture worldwide. It is the perfect accompaniment to roasted meats and dishes of wild game.

Novecento Anniversary IGT Venezia GiuliaThis excellent white is created to capture the finest expression of our terraced vineyards “ronchi” in the Friuli Colli Orientali. A deli-cious blend of three native varieties: Ribolla Gialla, Friulano and Picolit. It yields a rich well-balanced wine with a distinctive aroma

and with a long finish, reflecting the region’s character of unmistakable minerality. Steeped in history, Rocca Bernarda has long been a point of reference in Friulan enology. One of the first wine estates dating back to 1559 when agronomical practices were

confined only to the finest territories. Considered one of the most exemplary estates in Friuli, “Rocca Bernarda”, from which it takes its name, has a unique microclimate with spectacular terraced vineyards upon gently rolling hills protected by the Julian Alps.
