ARE GENDER AND GBV CONCERNS ANDRESPONSIBILITIES FOR BOTH WOMENAND MEN? HOW ARE THEY INVOLVED?

YWCA is currently working with men under the

mens network program to prevent GBV. Young

    Women Christian Association (YWCA)

conducted a baseline survey in 1994 and the

findings were that 100% of the cases: 98% of thevictims were women and only 2% were men. Its

against that background YWCA is engaging men

as change agents to prevent GBV.INSTITU

ARE THEIR DEDICATED RESOURCES,INCLUDING HUMAN AND FINANCIAL

    RESOURCES FOR GENDER

MAINSTREAMING? The organization has human resource both staff anda pool of volunteers and material resource to conduct

Gender Based Violence (GBV) activities but mainly

from our cooperating partners. Gender and GBV

initiatives fall under the Womens Human RightsProgramme which is the major programme for the

organisation and has resources allocated for

implementation of activities aimed at addressing

    gender and GBV issues.

    MONITORING AND EVALUATION

The YWCA National Office Secretariat currently depends on

monthly reports from the regions on every project. Then

National office carries out monitoring activities on a

quarterly basis. Its during these Monitoring visits where

issues that were reported are physically checked and

pertinent issues are redressed. In cases where funds

allow, baseline surveys are conducted to collect baseline

data that is used for comparison purposes during

evaluations which are conducted either mid term or end of

    term.

    WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

YWCA advocated for the enactment of the intestate succession act.

YWCA drafted the GBV bill and advocating for the enactment of a GBV

    legislation.

YWCA has been promoting land rights for women access and control

of land. As a result of this initiative, Womens claims to access and

control land are being supported in Rufunsa and Mkushi by traditional

leaders who hold and distribute traditional land in these areas. In the

past, ownership of land allocated by traditional leaders would only bear

the mans name but with YWCAs intervention, both the name of the wife

and husband are being indicated on the land allocation slip.

Provision of 5 protective women shelters

. The creation of the Mens Network in 8 district has been one of our

    success stories.

    LESSONS LEARNED

The provision of services in a morecoordinated and mult-sectoral responseapproach should be created through outYWCA Drop-in- centres which will act as a

one stop centres where abused womenand girls should report GBV cases

These cases should be prevented throughserious engagement of most perpetrators

    (Men/Boys) as change agents.
