DATOS GEOGRAFICOS

Vieques, la "Isla Nena", luce su hermosura sin par al sureste de Puerto

Rico entre las latitudes 185 y 18 norte y entre las longitudes 6516 y

6534 oeste. Se encuentra a seis millas del punto mas cercano al este de Puerto

Rico.

Por el norte el oceano Atlantico y pot el sur, elCaribe Azulose, banan sus

costas irregulares "formando una corona de plata y de cristal."

El area total de la isla comprende 53,088 acres (5]..7 millas cuadradas),

aproximadamente ].8 millas de pargo y 5 millas en la parte rnas ancha. Com-

prada con las islas adjacentes a Puerto Rico: Culebra y Mona, Vieques es la

mayor comparandola con las Islas Virgenes resulta mayor que St. Thomas y St.

John y solamente le excede an tamano Santa Cruz.

La elevacion promedio en Vieques es de 58 pies, sobre el nivel del mar y el

diez pot ciento de la superficie total se eleva sobre los 400 pies.

Su precipitacion pluvial es generalmente baja, 48-92 pulqadas anuales, a

cuasa de la baja elevacion de sus colinas, el area tan reducida y los vientos alisios.

Su parte este es extremadamente seca y probablemente no caen mas de 20 a 25

pulgadas al ano. El tiempo de sequia se extiende desde diciembre basra abril.

HIGHLIGHTS OF CRUZAN HISTORY

ST. CROIX today is an hospitable island that has a little of everythingexcept cold weather.

The island has changed remarkably since Columbus discovered it in 1493and was driven of/ by hostile Indians. In the nearly 500 years that have inter-

vened, this little ar of 8,4 square miles and 52,628 acres has alternately suf-fered and prospered flora the blind forces of nature and history. It has attracted

a remarkable variety of people during its hislory, not all of whom benefitedthe island.

During the period of development of the Western Hemisphere, St. Croixwas fought over, colonized, bought, sold captured and recaptured because of its

strategic or economic potential. It is popularly said to have existed under the

flags of seven nations. This tally does not include periods of possession or use by

aboriginal tribes pirates, filibnslers, squatters, private owners, religious and

trading companies, or the few times when it was not occupied by anyone at all.

Our documented history begins with the Indians found on the island by

Columbns, and seen aiu by Governor John White 94 years later when hestopped here three days on his way to found Virginia in 1587.

THE VANISHED INDIAN. When Columbus sent his men ashore at St.

Croix’s Salt River entrance to look fro’ fresh water, November 14, 149:5, ttelanding party encountered a canoe full of Indians and a lively fight took place onthe water. Columbus’ men got more or less the worst of it, but captured a few

Indians whom tbey took with them. Columbus named the spot "Cabo de

Flechas" or "Cape of the Arrows".When the island came to be ,ctually settled in the early 1600’s, there

were [o Indians ]eft. It is assumed that most of them. were carried off in raidsby the Spaniards to work the gold mines of Santo Domingo.

To diis cky the question r*rmains unsettled as to whether St. Croix was

inhabited by tile warlike, cannibalistic Caribs or the peaceful Arawaks, or both.The Arawak culture predomirated, as artifacts show, but the cultural traits werecan’ied by the women, and the Caribs as they moved northward through the

tUtilies from the Orinoco ar, like nothing better than capturing Arawakwomen. Thee i also evidence of strong relationships with the warlike Tainans

of Puerto Rico, and the peaceful Taino of Hispanioia, who sometimes hadwomen as chieftains.

In any case, St. Croix has at least forty Indian village sites, and is rich in

Indian artifacts. The Salt River village site is a favorite diggdng spot for localamateurs.

CHRISTIANSTED HISTORIC SITEFORT CHRISTIANSVAERN, A typical example of 17sh and 18th century

military architecture built by the Danes. Finished in 1749, it was arrison for

the army and later police station. Many changes have bean made: Comman-

dant’s quarters, powder magazine, stable and other parts added.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE. Originally mrant’s house, it was bought in

1771 by the government for headquarters, and for living quarters of the Gover-

nor-GeneraL Two years later it was remodeled and aain in the 1818-20 period.

At this time adjoining house the side street bught and added. There

were extensive repairs in 1864 and expensive furnishing bought for it. A fire in

1936 damaged it badly, and third story added for livin9 quarters...

The Danish overnraent has been most generous in helping refurnisb it in the

THE STEEPLE BUILDING. One of Christiansteds most historic landmarks,

this beautiful old building put up in 1750-53 the Lutheran State

Church; with the steeple added in the 1790’s. By 1831 the Lutherans ave up

the building in bad condition, and it became at various times miitary

bakery and storehouse with many structural changes, well hospital at

time. It was closed for many years. After research and years of authentic

restoration work under the direction of architect Fred Gjessng and historian

Herbert Olsen, it opened its doors aain early in 1964 museum for the

National Historic Site under the Park Service

THE LIBRARY BUILDING. is raceful two story building was at first

only story when completed in 1751 to be Customs House. It mpdified

and the second story added in 1828 30. It was later used Post Office.

THE OLD SCALE HOUSE. This is the building that houses the

Tourist Bureau downstairs; the Harbormaster’s office and the Camber of Com-

merce above. It was weighing station for the Customs House. Te old scales

still there, where the out=going bales of cotton, hogsheads of sar and

puncheons of were weighed, well all the exotic in-coming cargo.

THE POST OFFICE BUILDING. This rambling pink structure with its inner

courtyard was completed in 1748-49 to serve she big warehouse for the

original Danish West India and Guinea Company which first colonized the

islands.
