    The Kenwood Corporation is one of theworld's largest producers of consumerelectronics, including radios, cell phone,

    computers, and car audio systems. While thecompany is based in Japan, it has a long-established presence in many internationalmarkets, including the US, Europe, and

    Australia. Since its inception, Kenwood hasbeen known as an innovator in theelectronics industry, especially in thedevelopment of radio and speakertechnologies. In 2008, the company had gross

    sales of over $1.6 billion.

    Company Founding

    At the end of World War II, Japan's economy was virtuallydestroyed. After years of devoting major resources to the wareffort, few businesses were left afloat, and those that were still inoperation lacked resources for production. Japanese citizens

    were ready to rebuild the country, and the consumer marketsoffered great opportunity for entrepreneurs.

    To be continued In 1946, a group of businessmen started the Kasuga Radio

    Company in Nagano with the goal of developing a line ofradio equipment. By February of 1947, the company scored

    a major breakthrough with the development of the world'sfirst high-frequency radio coil. This coil allowed Kasuga toproduce high-performance radio systems, which quicklyhelped the company become Japan's top electronics

    producer.

    The 1950s

    In 1949, Kasuga introduced the world's first high-frequency transformer, which helped to transform radiotechnology. Throughout the 1950s, Kasuga made many

    more innovative contributions to the electronics industry,including the first FM tuner in 1957, as well as a number ofoscilloscopes and radio power supplies..

    INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

    The 1960s brought a great deal of expansion to thecompany. In 1960, Kasuga was renamed as TrioElectronics, Inc to reflect its growing product lines.The next year, the company was listed on the TokyoStock Exchange for the first time. In 1963, Trio becamea true international company, setting up offices in theUS, Canada, Germany, the UK, and Hong Kong. By1969, Trio had become one of Japan's largestcompanies, and began issuing shares of stock toinvestors in order to finance future growth.

    The 1970s and 80s Sales continued to climb throughout the 1970s, fueled by

    innovation in a number of electronics fields. Trio Electronics iscredited with developing the first solid state amplifier, as well as

    the first amplifier with dual-power source during this period. Bythe mid-1970s,

    Despite this dominance, the company continued toimprove radio technology, introducing high speed

    amplifiers, non-magnetic tuners, and amps with multi-stage power sources. In 1986, Trio changed its name toKenwood Electronics in order to unit the various products

    within the brand. Throughout the 80s, the company was an

    industry leader in car audio systems, including the firstanti-theft car radio.

    The 1990s and Today

    In the early 1990s, Kenwood entered the automobile racingindustry, designing car radio systems for F1 worldchampion racers. The company also pioneered CD-ROM

    development, GPS technology, and GSM phone systemsduring this period. By the late 1990s, the consumerelectronics market had grown so competitive thatKenwood tried to distinguish itself from othermanufacturers by marketing to high-end consumers.

    To be continued This effort failed, sending the company into financial

    difficulties at the start of the 21st century. After a focusedeffort at regrouping, Kenwood narrowed its product

    lines, reduced debt levels, and began paying dividendsto investors again in 2005 after a 6 year hiatus.
