I am from a diverse background and possess a passion to devote my experiences, interests and skills in the field of narrative design.

I've been fond of art since I began learning how to draw at 5. Additionally, while growing up, owing to the major in Adult and Continuing Education, I found that there were numerous problems rooted in the society and waited to be solved. I regarded myself as a innovative problem-solver to apply design skills, story telling and strategy planning abilities to solve social problems such as endanger tradition and cross culture conflicts and other critical issues.

On top of that, based on my interest in story telling and history, I expect myself to combine it with design. That is to say, to visualize the scripts or stories and create/revive the space to inspire people, preserve some fragile tradition culture and pass them to the next generation by means of films, impressive environments, meaningful atmosphere or ecomuseums is significant for me.

In order to serve as culture-based narrative designer, I eager to discover more possibilities in building up narrative and atmosphere design as well via learning from the peers, scholars and environments from multidisciplinary.

Every students in Special Topics on Digital Video and Audio class was required to share personal story to the whole class and the most touching ones could be shot as the outcome of the class.

Motivation

Green suit was Xian's dad's favorite clothes. He used to be a soilder who died 15 years before and left his wife to rise Ming and Xian on her own. Ming was strongly affected by Mom's tough personality, and shared the finance burden of the family after Dad's death. Xian, as the only son and younger brother, who generally behaviored maturely but sometimes lost his patient on small chaos. The story mainly focused on the events happened on Mom's birthday and left green suit as a clue to reveal the feeling that Mom still missed Dad intensely.

Storyline

After several group discussion, we decided to adapt one of our classmates’ personal story about single parent family which was one of most prevailing social phenomenon in Taiwanese society.

During the period we took this course, there was a hot TV series about military dependents' village. However, we considered its quality and content were superficial and believed the fact that we could produce a better version.

We decided to film the story which combined the characteristics of military village and single parent family to reflect the appearance of Taiwanese modern society and tradition culture as well.

Rough SurveyI did some survey on military dependent's village via wikipedia, reading materials, videos, photos bellow: wikipedia: military dependents' village military dependents' village exhibition 2009 in Taipei City‘‘the memory of our mother in military dependents' village ‘’a documentary film produced by Taiwan Public Television Service(PTS)military dependents' village story wrote by Taiwanese writer, Tien-wen Chu

Early ConceptAccroding to the rough survey, I made the early concept on the set and constume design of the film. Concrete wall, temporary building and simple interior design were three primary elements in the film. Furthermore, I proposed that the costume was designed on the basis of each character’s personality and the dressing style of military dependents’s village in the militay dependent's village exhibition I attended.

Ming was a tough and busy sister who worked in the trade cooperation office and used motorcycle as main transportation vehicle. She wore white suits and black pants with strip column windproof coats. The style and the monochrome color of the clothes implied her unadorned personality.

Xian was an university student and part time bar tender as well. He was a serious and careful son who always tried to lighten the finance burden of the family. Xian wore a pair of whole transparent glasses which indicated his rebellious characteristic.

The scene was mainly took in a military village. Vintage wooden furniture, corrugated roof and orderless allies were elementary features in military dependents's villages. These temporary buildings indicated the temptation of Chiang Kai Shek to conquer Mainland China and casted vital roles in the Taiwanese culture. According to the storyline and territorial speciality, we set the scene in the military dependents's village. I roughly drew the enviromental elements in the village and then discussed with the project members about the scene and design.

In the accordance of the above survey, I designed the bar where Xian worked was in modern style which reinforced the difference between the past and present. Also, the difference indicated Xian's characteristic which was the mix of conservatism and vanguard.

Model Making of The Bar

I went to several bars and coffee shops in Taipei city and concluded that high heel wooden chairs, bottles and directions of lights were essential components to the atmosphere of the bar.

PlotThis shot described the fact that Ming got stuck in the traffic jam. Ming rushed home with a cake to celebrate Mom's birthday. The street scene full of motorcycle in rush hour was ordinary scene in Taipei city. We shot it in order to indicate Ming’s anxiety and show this culture uniqueness in Taiwan as well. The birthday cake was intended to be saw in a mess shape in order to reveal the anxious feeling of Ming.

Behind the SceneOur team chose one of the most crowded road in Taipei City and has several shots there. The sketches were the arrangements of the elements in the scene. The cake was shaked gentally to remain its roughly profile.

It's an abandoned space revitalization project of the retro theater located in Yan Cheng Pu,

Kaohsiung City.

Da-Wu-Tai theater is the only remaining vintage theater in Kaohsiung City which built in

1947 after World War II and now in danger of destruction by the owner.

I implement spatial design and narrative skills to not only revive the vacancy building into

culture creative industry but also bring social innovation to local habitants.

Page 16: portfolio

In late 2011, I watched the news that the famous pediment of Da Wu Tai theater was under destruction by the owner who didn’t regard it as vital local cultural heritage and wanted to sell it out separately. The news aroused the attention from the public as well as local government who preferred to preserve but demolish it. Even though the department of cultural affairs declaimed to set it as a city heritage for preservation, the owner refused to take it. In addition, due to the proprietorship that belonged to the owner, others who cared about the topic could do nothing on it.

Da Wu Tai theater was not only the only local theater which had been remained today since 1947, but also essential cultural heritage indicating the thriving of entertainment development of Kaohsiung city after World War II.

As a local habitant who lived near Da Wu Tai theater, I had intense feeling on it which motivated me to revive and preserve it via revitalization design. Also,I considered there might be a possibility for the future of the theater via the combination of abandoned place, urban renewal, city memory and social innovation.

Da-Wu-Tai theater was built as the performing center of taiwanese opera in 1947 by a Taiwanese architect. Its exterior design was strongly affected by the eclecticism in architecture style with pediment design.

Then, it turned into a movie theater and began to release western films since 1950. Afterwords, depending on the novel strategy to joint the bookstore and the theater directed by the owner, the box office of Da-Wu-Tai ascended to the first place for years. Not until the closure of Da-Wu-Tai in 1999, did it retain the great contribution to the publicity of Yan Cheng Pu.

There were 20 theaters in Yan Cheng Pu after World War II. Go movie watching was a popular recreation for the general public at that time. But those theaters closed down one after another on account of the falling of local development. Eventually, Da-Wu-Tai was the only retro theater located in Yan Cheng Pu today.

Rough SurveyThe Gurardian Report Deprived on the quote from ''Population decline set to turn Venice into Italy's Disneylandon'' Saturday 26 August 2006, on The Guardian. ''Venice will never again be a normal city, but will become a mere tourist destination and lose its charm - even for the tourists themselves," she was quoted as telling the daily La Repubblica yesterday.'' As a result, though with the help of UNESCO, the boom of tourists still destroyed the cultural heritage and affected its sustainability. Accordingly, in order to preserve the cultural heritage and develop it appropriately, well organized management and strategy skills were the most significant parts of all.

Based on this conscious, I planned the revitalization project could not only catch the requirement of local people but also stand as a preservation and promotion center for folk culture.

New Perspectives on Historical Writing, written by British historian Peter Burke''History from Bellow'' written by Jim Sharpe in Peter Burke's book ''New Perspectives on Historical Writing'' motivated me to mind the importance of folk culture. As Jim Sharpe mentioned, bellowed history emphasized that not only professional historians but also ordinary people who were interested in the past of their families, communities, and organizations could contribute to the understanding of history. And it showed that history, appropriately presented, could find a wide audience when it addressed matters which concerned ordinary people.

The Dependency Ratio and Aging Index in Kaohsiung which deprived from Bureau of Civil Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government, 2011. According to the above data, ‘‘Old Population Ratio’’ of Yan Chen district won the third place in Kaohsiung City. Consequently, it would reasonable to turn Da Wu Tai Theater into a place which fulfilled the need of local community.

1 Excavated Kaohsiung cultural uniqueness

2 Equipped sufficient cultural facilities(ex.museum, theater, gallery)

3 Built urban image from the famed port and transportation equipment

4 Developed local and cultural output value

5 Evaluated branding ability

6 Revived Public Space

The Research of Use Culture Creative Industry to Develop Kaohsiung's Culture Tourism City Development Magazine in 2010. Based on the research, it would be appropriate to revive Da-Wu- Tai Theater via reusing it into a place with cultural uniqueness and output values.

2-2

The goal of revitalization project should satisfy the need of local habitants’ daily lives and become the regional culture center for the development and sustainability of folk culture.

Page 18: portfolio

Da-Wu-Tai Theater

2-3

Page 19: portfolio

Earlu IdeaBased on the survey of Da Wu Tai Theater and other related issues, I then observed the habitants' daily routines and concluded that people in the community preferred to do some exercise in the park, had a cup of tea under the tree, went shopping in traditional markets in the early morning or cooked delicious dishes to share with their neighborhoods.

2-4

Page 20: portfolio

Healthcare Consulting CenterI organized to turn Da-Wu-Tai theater into the healthcare consulting center for the elders which possessed the transdisciplinary cooperation among doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapist and fitness trainers who generally worked independently but all played equally vital roles in the health of the elders. If they could collaborate perfectly to provide a whole scale model of health care consulting service which supplied personal diet plan and exercise advices, senior citizens would get advantages from it. Also, it ensured that the society could enjoy the proper and suitable development process, growing old.

On top of that, the senior citizens would felt much more comfortable to stay and do exercise or gain advices on their health in the more familiar place than in the hospitals which usually scared them away. This revitalization of Da-Wu-Tai theater was a social innovation project which the local habitants as well as fulfilled the trend of aging society in Yan Cheng district.

Otherwise, because Da-Wu-Tai theater was right near the local tradition market, I see it can also be a kitchen for the tourists, youth and the local people to enjoy the tradition food cook by the elders.

Folk Culture CenterYan Cheng Pu has been famous for its traditional food and beverages since the early twentieth century. The recipes and skills to make snacks or sauces were too complex for the youth to learn so that only the limited masters could do these perfectly. If they passed out, these skills might lost forever. In addition, lots of these masters could only speak Taiwanese but Chinese. If these knowledges couldn’t be stored in the place, the communication gap might result in the falling of these precious skills and traditions.

For most of the time, it was not convincing to put the citizen culture in the museum for conservation but reasonable to set it in the abandoned vacancy such as Da-Wu-Tai Theater.

Accordingly, I planned to transform Da-Wu-Tai theater into a local folk culture center for the conservation of unique citizen culture. That is to say, these uniqueness could be pass to the next generation and the offsprings of ours. In addition, the prosperous turism would benefit the local people pretty well and create win-win situation for the owner, habitants, visitors and the tradition culture.

Otherwise, in order to manage Da Wu Tai theater smoothly, I planned to yield operation and management rights to the local NGOs such as TAKAO Renaissance Association.

Healthcare Consulting CenterDescriptionThe healthcare consulting center was a transdiscinpinary cooperation project with the help of regional hospital, NGOs for aging people and local exercise center. Whenever the senior citizens required healthcare consultant services, they could easily adjust the direction of all the furnitures and then discussed with the doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapist and fitness trainers about their health plans.

DesignThe wall showing the vintage style was made of yellow stones which was the same as the appearance of Da Wu Tai theater. The table sets consisted of vine and hemp which were durable, water-resist and light enough for the senior citizens to move. There were three doors as the entrances for the center which was well ventilated and convenient for the elders to walk in and out.

The graduation project is about the story of my hometown, Yan Cheng Pu, in Kaohsiung City. It used to be a business and

multicultural center owing to the thriving of Kaohsiung Port. Though it is not as popular as before, its cultural diversity attracts

numerous young artists to settle down.

Our team interviews and films 9 habitants about the rise and fall of Yan Cheng Pu and make the documentary film for it. All

the materials we create is on the website: http://natureawakes.clanteam.com/1.html. I serve as visual and exhibition designer

in the project.

On the other hand, after the graduation exhibition, our team adapts the original nine documentary films into one version with

some edits. I participate as production designer in the project.

Yan pUForeign businessmen, American soliders, bar ladies, local gernies and businessmen fulfilled the diversity of Yan Cheng Pu. However, after the U.S. broke its formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1978, the navy left and the administraction center transfered to northern Kaohsiung, the development of Yan Cheng Pu went down.

Nevertheless, owing to the convenience of Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit(KMRT) since 2007, more and more citizens came to Yan Cheng Pu for tradition snacks, food or art exhibitions held in Kaohsiung Pier. Some artist, architectures and young entrepreneurs fell in love with her retro style and started up the business here which brought spirits and innovations into Yan Cheng Pu.

Also, it was no longer a old fashion town but a perfect place for artists, singers or entrepreneurs to practice art, make performances or start up a new business. The graphic in black lines were the vital tourism spots such as NGO associations, art galleries and museums.

Description Uncle Wu was a warehouse worker in banana pier. He witnessed the boom and falling of banana pier and shared his memories with us. We videoed his stories not only introducing oral history of banana pier to the general public but also paying respects to the small but vital working classs of Taiwan society.

StorylineHe mentioned whenever they were off work, they were in uniforms and went straightly to the bars and danced with the ladies. Because the banana warehouse worker was a popular job at that time, the uniform indicated the honor of it. On top of that, the dirtier the uniforms were, the more welcomes they would receive because it revealed the fact that you worked harder than others.

Description I was responsible for the exhibition design of the graduation project from June 9th to 10th, 2011. In order to visualize the documentary film in a retro style, I picked up a second handed leather sofa from my friend's home with a wooden texture table in circle and square.

Exhibiiton Design With the help of the convenience which subway brought and the warehouse revitalization projects directed by the city governments, Yan Cheng Pu was the mixture of the new technology and tradition. Consequently, I created a space with vintage sofa, circular and square table covered with flowered pattern cloth. The above picture was the sketch by Keynote to illustrate my idea to the team members.

Development ofThe Documentary

An year after the graduation exhibition, an famed documentary film company, Movie Charger, contacted us and told us the fact that they had interest in publishing our work. Moreover, they suggested us to integrate nine different documentary films into one complete version. Accordingly, our team decided to kept working on the project in our leisure time from August 2012 to March 2013. The prime storyline of the new version regards as my childhood memory in Yan Cheng Pu since 1991 as well as the oral history told by local people such as owner of suit store, indie singers and dancers.

3-6

Page 31: portfolio

Further Production Design

Behind the scene I did the production design of the documentary film via the paper cut graphics. The sketch was originated from the photos shot in 1950s. I observed the style of the streets, navy and bar ladies so that I could rebuild the scenes by means of paper cuts. Furthermore, I gathered some information in National Kaohsiung History Museum about some historical events and created some figures in monochrome illustrating the dark time of Yan Cheng Pu

PlotThese series were built in the essential history events of Taiwan such as the break-up in diplomatic relations of Taiwan(R.O.C.) and the U.S.; abandonment of Martial Law; the stories of local people such as romantic stories among bar ladies and American Navy.

3-7

Page 32: portfolio

PlotAs the first-person of the documentary film, these series were my childhood memories about Grandma, my uncle and some scenes in 1991. It was the elementary storyline and has strong connections with other plots of the documentary film.

Behind the scene I draw the people based on the photos in family album and my memory. The set I proposed to create seemed like the scenes in the dream.

3-8

Page 33: portfolio

PlotThe scene described that the navy danced with bar ladies

in a retro bar near Kaohsiung Pier during the period that Seventh Fleet of the United States Navy was conducted

to Taiwan since 1950. Also, it was the golden time of Yan Cheng Pu which was directly near Kaohsiung Pier.

Behind the scene I took notes about the poses and gestures of the dancers while I was at ballroom dance class. Moreover, I watched the pictures about American Navy in 1950s in Kaohsiung

History Museum. Depending on the notes, I drew few ladies in different dress with flower patterns in bright color

which matched the clean white navy uniforms. In the vintage space with wooden floor, high heel chair and some pictures on the wall, the U.S. navy danced with elegant bar

ladies in scarlet red and grass green romantically which was a common scene at that time.

Yahoo! expects the university students would use its blog more than blogger, pixnet blog or other social media services and love the brand of Yahoo! more than before. Based on this statement, during my intership in audience team, my mentor demand me to take over the task and promote it as much as I could.

Accoding to the previous experiences in arrangements of international students' activities and social media management skills in Business Next Magazine, I turned to contact the students blogger among several universities and organized the production of their works. On top of that, I planed the blog to be the platform for the audience to discuss the points of views toward the society, life, love, finance or other perspects of university students.

Until the blog ran smoothly, I then organized online line campaigns or transdisciplinary cooperation with other departments in Yahoo. For instance, online campaign was to collect ghost faces pictures in August which used to be regarded as the ghost month in Taiwanese society. There were 308 users attending the activities and the most popular ones were posted on the front page of the blog.

There were 30 student bloggers creating 148 passages and the browsing number from July to August 2010 is 270,000 which demonstrates the highly engagements between the students, audiences and Yahoo!. Yahoo! expects the university would use its blog more than blogger, pixnet blog or other social media services. Even though there is a room for us to make progress, the official blog casts a well beginning.

The idea of Ghost Face, an online campaign, came from Taiwanese tradition culture that July means ghost month. Based on the genre of off ic ia l websi te and several discussions with the design company, the layout was mainly decorated with sport fields, books, notebooks, wood textures and other elements which was prevalent on campus. This section was the practices of graphic design which I did from 2010 to 2011. As a beginner, I learned the value of design from daily observations.

On the purpose of practicing typography, I merely adjusted the spaces between Chinese characters and English alphabets without changing the colors to make the appearance seems as grayscale. After the previous practice, this skill was applied to create my appearance.

Addit ional ly, the other work was to observe the environments and shapes in life. I made several shots of the stuffs which seemed the same as English alphabets and turned them into a small book.

Owing to the strong passion in photography, I always had GRD III on hand to capture the moments impressing me. Also, I was absolutely obsessed with tradition culture which was the primary themes I shot for most of the time.
