Piran 皮蘭Piran is probably the most beautiful of Slovenia's coastal towns, perched on a tiny piece of land jutting into the sea. It feels more like an Italian coastal town, without all the Italian tourists, and for good reason: Piran was part of the Venetian empire from the late 13th century to the end of the 18th century and then part of Italy from 1918 til 1947.

Piran (Italian: Pirano) is a town in the Municipality of Piran in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town has much medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses. Piran is the administrative centreof the local area and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid 20th century Italian was the dominant language, but was replaced by Slovene as populations moved.

Picturesque Piran , sitting at the tip of a narrow peninsula, is everyone’s favourite town on the Slovenian coast. Its Old Town, one of the best preserved historical towns anywhere on the Adriatic, is a gem of Venetian Gothic architecture. In April or October, though, it’s hard not to fall in love with the winding Venetian Gothic alleyways and tempting seafood restaurants.

Venetian House

Venetian House. The red building on Tartinijev trg, is a fantastic example of gothic Venetian architecture and the oldest building on the square. Built by a rich Venetian merchant to house his mistress, spot the inscription between the upper windows: it says Lassa pur dir, or "let them talk".

In the central axis at second floor of Town Hall was built a stone figure of Venetian lion with an open book. Open book meant peace, but war is closed.

The 1st of May Square (Srari trg)

Page 47: Piran (皮蘭)

The 1st of May Square, or the Old Square, is the centre of the old Punta. The main streets of Piran meet here. Inhabitants and visitors come here for shopping or a glass of native red wine. In the summer months, many musical, dance and theatre performances are held in the centre of the square.

In the centre of the square, there is a stone rainwater cistern, which was built after a severe draught in the year 1775. At the back of the cistern, there are the statues of two babies, one holding a fish and the other a pot. Gutters were connected to these statues from the surrounding roofs. The water running through the stone blocks, gravel and sand was stored clean in the cistern. In the middle of the square there are two smaller wells, water was pumped out with a hand pump, which is still preserved.

The stairs leading onto square are decorated with two allegorical statues of Law and Justice. On the shield of Law is inscribed data about the well: its date, description of purpose and the names of citizens who contributed to its construction. On the shield of Justice are the town coat of arms, the Marcello family coat of arms and the Bemba family coat of arms.
