ITY ARCHIVESTo Whom It May Concern:

1am writing this letter of recommendation in support of Albert Whittenberg, candidatefor a faculty position in the History Department, Public History Program.

I have known Albert for several years. I first met him when he was a student in mydistance education class on Electronic Records Management taught as part of theArchival Education Collaborative. From the beginning of the class, it was clear to methat Albert was going to bean excellent contributor. His comments in class were alwaysthoughtful and insightful and displayed a real understanding of the major issues facingarc hivists in the world of electronic records . His papers displayed the same qualities of avery good mind that possessed a solid grasp of the issues. Alber t go t a so lid A in theclass and clearly emerged as the best student I had that semester. What particularlyimpressed me was Albert's knowledge of information technology. The archives andrecords management professions need people like Albert who have solid training andexperience in IT to enter the profession and to teach our students. Albert has the trainingand experience I think we should be seeking in our archival and records managementinstruction programs. In 2010 I was able to observe Albert in another role, that of an archival educator. As partoftlle .'\rchival Education Collaborative, Albert ta1lght a class on the History of Archivesand Records Management to some of my IV students. I reviewed his sy llabus andthought it was excellent. During the semester, I talked to the IV students about the class, and they all agreed that Albert was doing a very fine job managing the class and thedisc ussions.

In the fall of 20 I0, the Archival Collaborative had its annual meeting in Baton Rouge, and Albert represented MTSU. I expected that Albert would do a fine job representingMTSU interests, and I was not disappointed. Albert expertly articulated MTSUpositions on various issues, and when he did not know the answer to a question, he hadthe good sense and judgment to defer the response until he could get officialconfirmation. Overall , during this 2 day conference, Albert did an outstanding job as aspokesperson for the MTS Public History Program.I acknowledge that I have not known Albert for a long time, nor have I seen him in actionin a variety of settings. onetheless , I feel confident in saying that Albert would be afantastic addition to the Archival Education Collaborative. He has demonstrated to methat he has a very good grasp of the issues facing archivists and records manager, and histraining and experience in information technology are extremely valuable. He has shownme as a student and teacher that he can communicate his ideas both orally and in writing. Finally, Albert has demonstrated that he can function as a colleague and fellow educatorin the management of the Archival Education Collaborative. I recommend AlbertWhittenberg without any reservations.
