IDC는 임베디드 DBMS를 독립 소프트웨어업체(ISV)에 판매되어 대규모 소프트웨어나 하드웨어 제품(OEM)의 컴포넌트로 사용되는 데이터베이스 관리 시스템이라고 정의하고 있다.

또한 임베디드 DBMS는 일반적으로 성능 및 좁은 설치 공간에 맞게 최적화되며 , 데이타베이스나 애플리케이션에 의해 자동 처리되는 관리 기능을 갖추고 있다고 밝혔다.
