Worse still were the groups where it appeared that there was an obligation to supply customer leads to others within the group; you had the impression that this had nothing to do with merit but was an unwritten rule of membership.Today’s Business Breakfast Club was really enjoyable and delegates happily fuelled themselves with a full English breakfast and lots of strong coffee. Stories were shared of extreme sports (such as driving in the rain on a Spanish Motorway), the delights of living in Spain, beyond Sun, Sand and Sangria (e.g. coffee!) and how to damp proof an old Spanish house (i.e. you don’t!).Everyone was then given the opportunity to briefl y describe their business to the rest of the group. Despite it being a Monday morning, nobody felt uncomfortable talking about their business, myself included as I explained how a Funeral Plan in Spain removes both the fi nancial and emotional burden of organising a funeral at a diffi cult time. Formal introductions complete and the Breakfast Meeting came to an end, however, many stayed on to chat further.

I recently attended the fi rst “Business Breakfast Club”

meeting which was held at the Baviera Golf Club in Caleta de Velez.It was an early start and delegates did not dally in the car park; despite the warm sun, there was a fresh breeze coming off the majestic, snow covered mountains that overlook the Velez Malaga valley. It is the fi rst snowfall of the season; a beautiful sight that conjures up memories of a winter holiday on the Canary Islands in Tenerife. The snow-capped peak of Teide, the volcano that rises up out of Tenerife, is often featured on picture postcards and these inspire tourists to try and take a similar photograph; of course, they never can and eventually have to succumb to buying a postcard to show to friends back home that it really is as fantastic a sight as they claim.Inside the Clubhouse at Baviera Golf Club, “Business Breakfast Club” hosts, Ashlyn and Raymond Watts of Ocio Magazine and Club Barter were instantly recognisable for being the only people looking fully awake at 8.30am – I suspect that they had sneaked an early coffee!There is always some apprehension at attending a business networking group. In the past, you could come across groups where visitors were mobbed by regulars; the regulars would desperately stuff marketing brochures into unsuspecting hands and give unsolicited “elevator pitches” about their wonderful products or

Retaining walls are technically challenging with many differentfactors needing to be taken into account, such as, soil type, location, positioning, design, drainage, size and wall type.Two basic fundamentals remain for all forms of retaining wall, a good solid foundation and the provision of adequate drainage. The retaining wall’s foundation needs to be able to support its weight and provide structural strength. The drainage system needs to be suffi ciently robust to allow for any water to freely fl ow away, as the increase in weight and pressure applied to walling can become immense after rain. The weakest part of any walling is usually the foundation. If this is undermined through defects

in the construction process or compromised by a lack of free fl owing drainage, the result will invariably be a collapsed wall.The standard form of wall used when looking to retain a bank is a reinforced concrete wall due to the cost and durability. A plainwall can look very industrial and soulless but can be enhancedwhen dressed in stone or rendered and highlighted with additional features.I frequently receive phone calls from people who have spent substantial amounts of money on retaining walls that have subsequently fallen down. This is due to insuffi cient experience and lack of knowledge by Builders that were recommended to them. I’m London born, and come from a very artistic background. My father was a successful fi lm director,

who was in partnership with Douglas Fairbanks Jr for years, and my mother,( a nurse), was a classical pianist.I left England at 19 to pursue an adventurous and exciting career which started in the Bahamas for 5 years, and travelled the world as a blues singer and pianist for many years. I made a couple of records and sold a few too .My art then took over and I became a portrait painter of people and animals (Tony Curtis owned a portrait I did of him, and reciprocated with a painting I treasure ) and I’m a self taught jewellery designer.I started in London in Camden Market, then the infamous Laines in Brighton, and now divide my life between Southern Spain for the last 15 years and the UK.My inspiration is from the surrounding magnifi cent Mediterranean seascapes, sunsets, and mountains of Andalusia, and the lush greens of Cheshire.

director de cine, que durante años estuvo asociado con Douglas Fairbanks Jr. y mi madre, que era enfermera, también fue una pianista clásica.Salí de Inglaterra a los 19 años para perseguir una aventurera y emocionante carrera que se inició con 5 años en las Bahamas, y, durante muchos años, he viajado por el mundo como cantante de blues y pianista. He grabado un par de discos y también he vendido otros pocos.Entonces mi arte me absorbió y me convertí en pintor de retratos de personas y animales (Tony Curtis tenía un retrato que hice de él, y me correspondió con una pintura que para mí es muy preciado), y también soy diseñador de joyas autodidacta.Empecé en Londres en el mercado de Camden, después en los infames Laines de Brighton, y actualmente y después de 15 años, divido mi vida entre el sur de España y el Reino Unido.Mi inspiración procede de los magnífi cos paisajes que rodean el Mediterráneo, las puestas de sol y las montañas de Andalucía, y los exuberantes colores verdes de Cheshire.

I am an avid fan of Christmas decorations. Not in the “let’s-

light-up-the-neighbourhood” kind of way, but defi nitely in the “let-it-be-known-that-it’s-party-season” kind of way. This is probably because I come from a family of Christmas decoration enthusiasts (we must have a brightly coloured bauble gene). My Grandma, bless her, has a style which might be best described as ‘Santa’s grotto’ but my mum (probably as a result of growing up in the annual Santa’s grotto) is the doyenne of cathedral candles wrapped in broad ribbon, tasteful nativity displays and an impeccably decorated tree. I, on the other hand, lie somewhere in between, leaving alone my Grandma’s penchant for plastic snowmen but also favouring a

more colour confi dent tree than Mum’s. As a result, last year, her tree looked spectacular in an abundance of white feathers, dangling crystal, acrylic angels and silver ornamentation and I headed for the shocking pinks with a splash of orange. Finding a space for the spruce in most homes requires serious rearranging, especially for those who favour enormous trees (and they’d be in good company; Queen Victoria was said to insist on them). The artifi cial trees available today, however, are predominantly slim in style in order to fi t in smaller spaces, but they can also be used as secondary or even tertiary trees – a stunning svelte all-bauble tree for a fi reside or a special guestroom, a fi bre

Preparing for Christmas, for me, is half of the fun. Shopping for new decorations, planning the location of the tree and of course knitting it all together with the right colour scheme throughout the house. It is a perfect opportunity to create your own winter wonderland for the whole family to enjoy.

optic tree for a bay window.Adorning a tree is one of the highlights of the year, whether you carefully unwrap your childhood favourites to do so, or search high and low from September onward for the perfect trimmings and the most up-to-date in bauble fashion. This year, red is the colour, in whatever shade you prefer.Turquoise also features in the contemporary Christmas colour scheme and if contrast is what you like, then perhaps you can combine them with a few of last year’s orange decorations. These need not necessarily be hung from the tree either, as baubles look gorgeous in bowls and vases, too. If using complementary colours, make sure one is more dominant than the other – lots of gold with a splash of purple or vice

No del tipo “vamos a iluminar a todo el barrio” sino del tipo “ha llegado el momento de la fiesta”. Esto, probablemente, tiene sus raíces en el hecho de que mi familia entera está hecha por entusiastas de las decoraciones de Navidad (¡seguramente es algo de la genética!). Mi abuela, la pobrecita, opta por un estilo hortera como lo que se ve en ‘las casitas de Papa Noel’, mientras mi madre (después de haber vivido muchas navidades multicolores) es la personificación de elegancia con velas gordas decoradas con lazos, un portal de Belén de mucho gusto y un árbol decorado a la perfección. Por el otro lado, yo tengo un estilo que cae en el medio de los dos:

dejo a un lado la preferencia de mi abuela por hombres de nieve hecho de plástico sin embargo elijo algo más de color para el árbol que mi madre. Como consecuencia, el año pasado, el árbol de mi madre era espectacular con sus plumas blancas, ángeles de cristal y adornos de plata, mientras el mío era un conjunto de rosa fosforito con un toque de naranja.Encontrar un sitio para el árbol no es nada fácil y normalmente, en la mayoría de las casas, requiere una reorganización de todos los muebles, especialmente si eres del tipo que quiere un árbol grande. Los arboles artificiales que se pueden comprar hoy en día suelen ser algo más pequeño para poder meterlos en espacios más reducidos; aunque algunas personas los u

usan como un árbol extra para ponerlo al lado de una chimenea

o en una habitación de invitados. Los arboles de fibra óptica son muy buenas para ofrecer algo de color y ponerlas en las ventanas. Decorar el árbol de Navidad es uno de los momentos más especiales del año y cada familia tiene sus rituales personales: algunas personas desenvuelven los adornos que tienen desde que eran jóvenes mientras otras empiezan la búsqueda para los adornos perfectos desde septiembre para tener un árbol a la última moda. Este año, el color de moda es rojo, de cualquier tono. El azul turquesa es otro de los colores contemporáneos que se ven en los arboles de hoy. Si te gustan los contrastes, puedes mezclarlo con algunos de los adornos naranjas del año pasado. No tienes porque colgarlos en el árbol, los adornos quedan bien dentro de cuencos y jarrones también. Si eliges colores que se complementan, uno de ellos debería ser más dominante que el otro dado que crea un efecto más estético - por ejemplo, mucho oro con un toque de purpura o el rojo mezclado con el verde.Se puede decorar el árbol para que pegue con la habitación en la que se encuentra - unos adornos comestibles para la cocina (¡aunque lo más seguro es que habrá que reponerlos varias veces durante las navidades!) o una selección de juguetes (trenes de madera, soldados, una batería, hadas, etc.) o adornos deportivos (coches de carreras, bolas de golf) para la sala de juegos. Para los dormitorios de los niños se puede elegir un árbol pequeño o incluso una rama decorada con adornos que son apropiados para su edad y gustos, bien n

sea con unas hadas madrinas o arañas, unos CD viejos decorados con brillantina o la versión de diseño exclusivo con cristales Swarovski que brillan como diamantes. Las coronas de Navidad también vienen de muchas formas, colores y texturas diferentes, no sólo el verde tradicional. Un aro de cascabeles sería ideal para la puerta principal o se podría elegir algo más original con una corona de plumas con toques de morado o lima. Se puede realzar las coronas de ramitas con canela o crear una corona aromática con eucalipto o flores frescos. La iluminación es un factor clave en las navidades y una casa bien iluminada alegra a cualquier persona después de un día de trabajo. El uso de la fibra óptica en las ventanas funciona muy bien y las cuerdas de luces quedan de maravilla debajo del árbol o entrelazadas en las barandas. La Navidad es el momento ideal para las lucir las velas y hay una amplia gama de tamaños y colores que son espectaculares cuando se las combinan con jarrones

interesantes (hay que asegurarse que cada vela tiene un plato debajo de ella para que no se caiga). Además, hay una gran variedad de luces para el árbol - luces en forma de bolas de nieve, pececitos de oro, chilis de color rojo, flores metálicas - y lo mejor es que se puede usarlas durante todo el año para decorar otras partes de la vivienda, por ejemplo las camas o en una habitación solana. La mesa para la comida del día de Navidad es tan importante como la comida. Manteles individuales de esmalte vitrificado son muy elegantes y cartulinas de identificación aseguran que el cocinero puede sentarse al lado de la persona que quiere. Una vez que el pavo y toda la guarnición estén en la mesa no hay espacio para muchos adornos extras, entonces otra opción es colgar unas bolas de cristal llenas de flores o piedras centellantes del techo o de las lámparas encima de la mesa. A no ser que este año te hayas comportado muy bien y Papa Noel te haya traído esa araña de luces que habías pedido...¡en ese caso ya no hará falta más adorno que esa!

Trees can also be decorated to suit the room they are in – an edible selection for the kitchen tree (though they will need frequent replenishment, I’m sure) or a selection of toys (wooden trains, soldiers, drums, fairies etc) and sporting ornaments (racing cars, golf balls) for the games room tree. A tiny tree or even just a decorated branch for the kids rooms could be wonderful too – varying decoration depending on their age and tastes, be that sugarplums or spiders, old CDs coated in glitter or the designer version with Swarovski rhinestone that sparkle like cut diamonds.Christmas wreaths also come in all shapes, textures and colours now, as well as the traditional green. Rings of bells will make a musical front door, or a feather version in unexpected hues such as aubergine, or even lime, will make an original statement. Twig wreaths for the minimalist can be enhanced with sticks of cinnamon, and a ring of eucalyptus or tiny fresh flowers would make a wonderfully scented

arrangement.Lighting is key at this time of year and a beautifully lit house is a welcoming sight at the end of the working day. Fibre optic displays will bounce light around in windows, rope lights look glorious under the tree or wrapped around banisters.Candles come into their own at Christmas and a show of differing types and sizes look wonderful when combined with interesting vases (ensure that all candles have plates or holders in which to stand safely). Tree lights also come in an enormous number of styles - fluffy lit snowballs, bright orange goldfish, glowing red-hot chillis, delicate metallic flowers - and most of these can also be used throughout the year, over beds or in conservatories, perhaps.The Christmas lunch table is as much a decorative feast as it is a gourmet one. Enamel placemats look extremely stylish and place cards will ensure that the chef gets to sit next to the person he/she wants to. There is usually little space for elaborate decorations on the table once the turkey and its own trimmings have arrived, so why

not hang your adornments over the table in dangling glass balls filled with flowers or sparkling stones? Unless, of course, you have been very good this year and asked Father Christmas for a chandelier, then that will be taking centre stage in all its glory.

As we all know, Christmas lunch is arguably the most important feast of the year. The pressure is on for

the cook of the family to deliver a faultless, traditional meal. Yet it is one of the most time consuming and complicated meals to prepare and cook. Dining out is always an option but restaurants are inevitably fully booked and often very expensive, and in the end most of us just want to stay at home with copious amounts of alcohol, the best of the year’s TV and the friends and family that we have chosen to be with, (or not, as the case may be). Como todos sabemos, la comida del día de Navidad

es, sin duda, una de las comidas más importantes del año. Para el cocinero de la familia hay mucha presión para servir una comida tradicional e impecable. Sin embargo, hay que decir que es una de las comidas más complicadas y difíciles de organizar además de necesitar mucho tiempo. Comer fuera de casa es siempre una opción pero casi todos los restaurantes están llenos y bastante caros y, al fin y al cabo, lo que realmente queremos es quedarnos en casa, hartarnos de comer y beber, disfrutar de lo mejor de la televisión y de los amigos y familiares con quienes hemos decidido pasar el día (¡o quizás hacer todo lo contrario y disfrutar de la tranquilidad de estar solos!). Otro problema que se suele tener es a la hora de comprar los productos necesarios para esta comida tan especial. Aquí en España no es fácil encontrar un pavo correcto, la salsa de arándano que tanto te gusta, las coles de Bruselas o algunas chirivías. De hecho, no todas las cocinas cuentan con un horno lo suficientemente grande como para poder asar un pavo de un tamaño adecuado para toda la familia. En fin, preparar esta comida puede ser muy difícil; pero este es un problema que ahora tiene una maravillosa solución...¡la comida del día de Navidad en una cesta de Restaurante El Avalon.Esta ha sido la idea genial de Alix y Kevin Robinson, los dueños del restaurante El Avalon en Nerja. La cesta está repleta de una comida de cinco platos que vienen ya preparados y listos para meterlos en el horno. Se ha pensado en todo, incluso una botella de cava. Además, hay unas instrucciones que te guiarán paso por paso, desde los paquetes sorpresas que estallan al abrirlos hasta los canapés servidos con cava y las trufas caseras para terminar. Y para esas personas que necesitan algo más de ayuda hay un servicio telefónico de asistencia. El año pasado mi familia y yo disfrutamos de una de estas cestas y ya hemos hecho el pedido para este año. Las cestas cuestan sólo 30 euros por persona pero hay un número limitado entonces es imprescindible hacer el pedido cuanto antes. Se puede recoger las cestas el día de Noche Buena desde el restaurante El Avalon, donde te esperarán con una copa de vino navideño: un vino caliente mezclado con azúcar y especies...¡justo lo que pide el cuerpo en este mes de frio! n
