    Student Strategy ExchangeDuring this session, presenters will share examples and non-examples of strategy exchange in a one-to-

    one laptop setting. Strategies to support effective strategy exchange between students will be highlighted.Please bear in mind that any of these suggestions/techniques to enhance strategy exchange among

    students can generalize to other content areas. This handout highlights the technologies used to supportstrategy exchange. For more information about any of these tools and the ways in which they support

    Instant Messenger(IM)How IM Is Typically Used We (students and teachers) used IM to

    IM is a way to communicate in short textbursts when to do so face to face isinconvenient.

    -communicate confusion to the teacher withoutdrawing unnecessary attention from others;

    IM has many social purposes- to keep in touchwith friends and family throughout the day

    - offer help to others whether noticingconfusion or not;

    Businesses/corporations use IM forcommunication at many different levels

    - ask each other for help when confused;

    -share website links when working;

    -share documents between us;

    -share images between us;

    -communicate/socialize with friends & colleagues;

    -discreetly set students up for expert status;

    -re-direct students who briefly veered offtrack;

    -distribute and collect assignments

    Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)How ARD Is Typically Used We (students and teachers) used ARD to

    ARD is used for troubleshooting computerproblems on a network

    - showcase EXPERTS at a variety of strategies

    ARD is used for monitoring vital computerstats like CPU, memory etc. -observe students processes and progress

    ARD is used for updating application andsystem software

    - catch students using strategies correctly

    ARD is used for installing new software on anetwork

    - communicate with students when needed

    ARD is used for providing remote support - demonstrate for students, projecting ourscreens onto the rest

    ARD Examples:

    Once starting ARD, yourscreen looks like this.You highlight thecomputer or computersyoud like to view orcontrol and click theappropriate button onthe menu. From thisscreen, you can shutdown an entireclassroom of computers.You can also sharescreens through thistool.

    The clarity whenobserving one of yourstudents computers isamazing! You can seewhat they are workingon (or not working on.)You can then send aquick redirectingmessage or lock thescreen if you need to.More importantly, hereis where you catch themdoing something right!

    When observing othercomputers, the teachercan decide what level ofdetail he wants to see.Choosing to view twocomputers at a time,looks like this image.The remainingcomputers will be cycled

    through this screen twoat a time.

    Messages move bothdirections, from teacherto students and fromstudents to teacher. Thisis one way we redirectedthose off task- discreetly!

    While the previousimage is a simplemessage to the teacher,the Chat option allowsfor more of a dialogue.This is helpful whentrying to explain ortroubleshoot somethingto a student not wantingthe teachers attention.

    Once clicking on LockScreen on the menu

    bar, this screen allowsyou to decide whichcomputers to lock andwhat message to displaywith the lock.
