Helping Your Child Get Ready for Kindergarten Parent and Child Together Time (PACT time) Tip for Home

Music can Teach...

Music gives children a fun way to learn, to memorize and to move.

At home or in the car, play a variety of music. Soothing music can relax us, while more upbeat

tempos can give us reason to move, to dance. Music gives families a fun way to move and to spend

time together.

Music has rhythms and beats. Clap to the beat. Stomp to the beat. Sway to the music. March to

the music. Or, simply lay down, close your eyes and listen together.

Some songs are traditional. Many American preschoolers learn The ABC Song. Children may not

recognize every letter, or even know they are saying “L M N O P”, but singing the song prepares the

brain for letter recognition. Many nursery rhymes also have tunes, and children often learn to sing

them before they can say them and then say them before they can read them...music is a part of the

process.

Transition songs: At school we also use music to help children change from one

activity to another. You can do this at home too— pick a “Clean Up” song, a

“Bedtime song” or a “Time to Get Up” song, to help your day go more smoothly.

Remember, children don’t care how we sound when we sing!

Parents are partners! Please share your observations of your child’s learning and development with us.
