Introduction
Backfill, the process of back filling material into the underground voids created
by mining, is essential in many underground operations for the holistic extraction
process. Backfill material types and processes are numerous but normally
utilize a blend of binders, process water and aggregates ranging from rock,
crushed aggregates, gravel and quarried sands to tailings left over from mineral
processing to provide the required restraint to enable massive strategic support
or the underground extraction sequence of the ore. Mine backfill is becoming
more and more important because of the trends in mining to: mine deeper,
optimize ore recovery, optimize water recovery, improve the mine cycle and
optimize production, decrease environmental impact and reduce overall cost.
The type of backfill used depends on geotechnical requirements, the value of
the ore, conditions in the mine, budget, lifetime of the project, experiences, and
available equipment. There is a more scientific approach to this challenge that
can help mining companies understand and run backfill operations at lower risks
and lower costs.
Advanced admixtures can solve various problems associated with backfill
processes. These range from paste to cement aggregate (CAF) types of backfill.
Chemical solutions are available to increase solid content, reduce friction and
segregation, modify rheology and flow, and reduce binder content as well as
costs. We push back the physical limits with our existing technologies such as
retarders, water reducers, superplasticizers, viscosity modifying admixtures
(VMAs) etc. and we are working hard to go even further in all areas of backfilling
operations. Depending on our customers requirements, we can control andachieve: retardation, acceleration, rheology control, modified viscosity, reduce
yield stress and pumping pressures. Furthermore, we can stabilize fines in the
fill matrix and reduce slime run off, segregation and porosity, and also enhance
strength development and optimize binder content.
BASFs industry leading technologies should be considered for new mining
projects as well as existing operations as they create opportunities for the mine
owner to operate systems that are safer, more environmentally friendly and more
cost effective.

The criteria and requirements for backfilling can vary substantially, depending
on the site specific requirements. BASF offers an extensive range of customized
solutions for all types of mine and underground backfill operations, all of which
have been developed with a focus on:
Placing the fill at the lowest possible cost
Improving reliability of fill delivery (ensuring reliable and adequate delivery
volumes)
Maximizing the quality, consistency, uniformity and performances of the fill
Providing a cost-effective, efficient and sustainable backfill solution as a part
of the total mining operation
Improving safety
Minimizing the risk of fill failure or liquefaction
Ensuring adequate early strength
Sustaining long-term strength
Minimizing blockage risk
Achieving dimensional stability after placement
Minimizing segregation
Optimizing production efficiency and maintenance costs
Reducing build-up in the pipe lines
BASFs extensive range of mine backfilling solutions have been developed to
provide the optimum balance of high early strength and sustainable long term
strength, ensuring dimensional stability after placement by meeting (or exceed-
ing) design fill performance requirements.
BASF offers chemical admixtures that aim to make the fill less costly and more
reliable, and reach or exceed the design performance.
Divided into three distinct product categories, BASFs range of backfill admix-
tures includes specialized rheology modifiers, hydration modifiers and durability
enhancers. All products are supported by BASFs extensive training and after-
sales service.

Paste Fill: Rheology modifying admixtures can enhance the workability of most
paste fill mixes in the following ways:
Reduced binder usage for any given strength requirement
Reduced pressure losses (longer transportation distance and/or improved flow)
Reduced pipeline wear rate
Improved fill placement (reduced beach angle)
Improved consistency of the fill mix and reduced segregation
Hydraulic Fill: Rheology modifying admixtures improve stability and transport-
ability of a hydraulic fill at a constant solids density or enhance flowability andtransportability of the fill at higher density of the hydraulic fill, resulting in:
Reduced pressure losses (longer transportation distance and/or improved flow)
Reducing blockage risk
Reduced pipeline and mixer wear rate
Increased efficiency and productivity of backfill plant
Decreased energy consumption
Improved fill placement (more consistent and homogeneous properties of
placed fill)
Improved drainage capabilities and significantly decreased fines migration from
the fill (slimes)
Better water management
Reduced binder usage for any given strength requirement
Improved consistency of the fill mix and reduced segregation
The use of selected hydration-controlling admixtures in cemented fills can:
Accelerate or retard the strength gain in the placed fill. This can be an important
issue depending on the mining method and mining schedule.
Control cement hydration prior to fill placement. This can be very useful from an
operational point of view because it reduces the generation of waste and costly
pipeline blockages.
Give possibilities for the operator to manage the process, as fill behavior is con-
trollable by dosage rate.
For specific site requirements and projects, such as those requiring the placement
of the fill into a stope with running water, BASF provides solutions for improving
the durability of the fill. BASFs specialized range of durability enhancing admix-
tures can either be used alone or in a combination to improve fill durability: ver-
satile performances that can meet the needs of even the most demanding project
specifications.
