Moving to a smarter planet

First, the world is becoming instrumented.

Imagine, if you can, a billion transistors for every human being. We're almost there. Sensors are being embedded everywhere: in cars, appliances, cameras, roads, pipelines…even in medicine and livestock.

Second, our world is becoming interconnected.

Soon, there will be two billion people on the Internet—but systems and objects can now "speak" to each other, as well. Think of a trillion connected and intelligent things, and the oceans of data they will produce.

Third, all of those instrumented and interconnected things are becoming intelligent.

They are being linked to powerful new backend systems that can process all that data, and to advanced analytics capable of turning it into real insight, in real time.

Just like a wiki, blog, flickr, mashups….

What do you do about those already?

Was Eightbar the right thing to do?

•Just get in world and start exploring

•Act as IBMers not as IBM

•Have a banner or flag to rally around (eightbar)

•Share, internally and externally, blog, flickr, youtube (eightbar.com)

•Treat every interaction and every person as important

http://www.eightbar.com

This is the spirit of Web 2.0

Web 2 is Web Do.

Has to be done with sense and responsibility balanced with personal risk and exploration

What has this felt like – Minor Celebrity?

•Choosing to have one known persona across all places has challenges

•Can epredator have a day off?

•Social and Work interaction mix online, but good things happen.

•Become a target.

•Honestly sharing means…. sharing the good and the bad.

•Openness becomes a way of life but can scare some people/organizations.

•You have to consider the leadership you are offering and that may not match with the organizational structure or existing politics.

•Being public and sharing in live environments relies on trusting serendipity.

•Keeping control of the ego is hard, but consuming as well as producing in web2.0 seems to be the key. Don’t just broadcast.

The Virtual World Guidelines

Written by the community for the community

Guidelines NOT Rules

IBM’s experience made public

Treat it as a new country

Learn and observe the customs

Connect and talk with fellow (fill in own company here)

Act with integrity

It’s the internet, so beware and be broad minded

Page 21: Metaverses, Tribes, smarter planet and You can change the world

You want an ROI on internal communication?

330,000 employees3 telecons a week each5 minutes dead time at the start of each call.

That’s 330000 x 15 minutes = 4950000 minutes of dead time PER WEEK!

You can check the maths its an average but we could be losing 9.4 years a week into dead telephone beeping time.

Services Orientated Architecture -SOA

Information as a ServiceConnect, enhance and deliver in-context information across diverse operating systems, applications and legacy systems through reusable services

Interaction and IdeasEnable people to virtually interact and collaborate for dynamic decision making

Process AutomationIntegrate and choreograph business and system activities into reusable process components

As a touchpoint Easiest of the considerations in process terms

Make sure the virtual world is treated as any other staffed channel

IBM business centre in Second Life – same people, same processes as IBM.com

Remember it is as much about people as providing gadgets.

Consider it a branch office or store, not an offline website.

It needs to be public and easy to get too.

Page 29: Metaverses, Tribes, smarter planet and You can change the world

Internal Communication Common mistake is to assume that virtual worlds are

a place to escape too.

Often treated as a side project

The virtual world platform has to be integrated into the workflow of everyday business life

Treat it as you treat email systems, instant messaging, site services.

A successful enterprise virtual world is wired into the services of the enterprise.

Use as and when needed, bring info in and push info out

Page 30: Metaverses, Tribes, smarter planet and You can change the world

Virtual Worlds as the business As a service provider or tool vendor this is business as usual

Use rigorous product development methods

Use robust middleware

Be as close to open source and open standards as possible

Use what you sell
