Hernani’s students are fortunate to be able to access two new exciting programs to support quality teaching in both Literacy and Numeracy, these are My Lexia and Matific.

Kinder and Year 1 students engaged learners

‘Lexia Core5 Reading’ is a research-proven Literacy

program that provides explicit, systematic,

personalised learning in the six areas of reading

instruction and targets skill gaps as they emerge.

Lexia encourages students to work independently

and develop critical reading and language skills

through individualised, motivating learning paths.

‘Matific’ is a Maths educational platform designed by

pedagogical experts (Teaching Gurus) that uses

game based principles to encourage students to

learn problem solving and critical thinking through

discovery.

This collection of online Mathematics activities

enhances personalised maths learning for K-6

students and is closely aligned to the Mathematical

curriculum.

Both programs have been designed to engage

student learning and motivation through enjoyable

and challenging activities. The students should love

them!

Once students are familiar with these programs we will be sending home Login Details and additional information. At our next P&C meeting parents will be provided with more information about our Teaching and Learning Program for 2020. Please note: Our school has purchased expensive headphones for each student to have their own personal set. Parents are advised that should your child break/damage their headphone replacement costs will be at parental expense. Thank you for your understanding. RENEWABLE ENERGY EXCURSION YEAR 4 & 5 – THURSDAY 13TH FEBRUARY 2020 We have been invited to join Dundurrabin Public School for a special learning experience for students in the senior years with the Cascade Environmental Education Centre’s staff on Thursday 13th February. Parents are asked to please see Mrs Winkel if you are able to help with return of the bus on Thursday 27th February. SMALL SCHOOLS SWIMMING CARNIVAL The traditional Small Schools Swimming Carnival held at Bellingen Swim Centre is scheduled to be held on Friday 14th February. Students who can swim 25 metres and are turning 8 years or older (PSSA age) will be eligible to represent our school at this event. As well as participating in either 25m or 50m swimming events, this is an invaluable opportunity for students to enjoy socialising with their friends from our Bellinger Dorrigo Learning Community, small schools. Mrs Williams will be attending this carnival with our students. School will be as per normal for students under the age of 8 years and those not participating in the swimming carnival. YOGA

Kinders learning to co-operate and master new poses- this is a bit tricky!

Our regular yoga program with community volunteer and Yoga teacher Pam, is now scheduled for Monday mornings at 9.00am. Our students and staff value and appreciate the contribution Pam makes to our school’s learning program and experiences. Thank you Pam! Parents are welcome to join students and staff for a great way to start our new school week. The new yoga venue, our library is proving to be a success. Don’t forget Pam’s yoga session on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. All welcome.

Yoga-great for focus, flexibility, balance and strength

BEST START KINDERGARTEN Our Kindergarten students have completed the new Best Start Assessment with Mrs Winkel. This assessment focuses on some of the key Literacy and Numeracy skills students demonstrate at the start of school. The assessments provide teachers with information to plan for teaching and learning to meet individual needs of our students. Information is automatically transferred to PLAN 2 and mapped to the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions. Teachers are able to update the information in PLAN 2 at any time once the assessment has been lodged. The assesssment provides information that teachers can share with parents and carers to help support their child at home. Our follow up meetings with parents will be scheduled in the near future and I am looking forward to discussing the Best Start Assessment results with each family. LIBRARY Mondays will be our Library borrowing day, as such please help your child to remember to bring a library bag and their books every Monday. Thank you, we have a wonderful range of library books and I look forward to being the librarian for 2020. Mrs Winkel☺ READ ALL ABOUT IT…….STUDENT NEWS! Monday’s will be our news day! Can parents please assist their child/children to be ready for this special talking & listening activity. Early Stage 1 & Stage 1 (students in Kindergarten & Year 1 ) are encouraged to bring an item into school to support their news, but this is not necessary. Stage 2-3 students are focussing beyond personal news to National and International news items and as such they will need to be aware of the news events. Should your older student still wish to bring a news item in to share this will also be possible. Please help your child with being prepared for this by using various media sources such as the television and newspapers etc.

BEING INVOLVED WITH YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL AND THEIR LEARNING We encourage all parents to maintain a positive and active relationship with our school. Please feel free to come into our classrooms, talk to teachers and see how your child’s school year is going. Our students would love to share their learning experiences with you and VALUE YOUR TIME SPENT IN OUR CLASSROOMS! The contributions parents, grandparents and community members make to our school are significant and we’d love to encourage all parents to join us where possible. This may be to listen to children read, share your interests and help us learn new skills. HOUSEKEEPING Please take the time to read through these important reminders:

• Please remember to either fill out a “Note of explanation for being absent from school.” These are located in each families folder at the front entrance. An explanation must be provided within 7 days or your child’s absence will be recorded as “Unjustified.” Please note the points below:

Regular attendance at school is fundamental to student learning. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve educational success, and increase their career and life options.

Student attendance has been identified as an important aspect of a student’s wellbeing and failure to receive an education has been identified as a risk of harm factor. Poor patterns of attendance place students at risk of not achieving their educational, social and psychological potential and disadvantage them in the quality of choices they are able to make in later life situations.

• School grounds are not public reserves or playgrounds. Use of school grounds, at all times, requires the explicit permission of the Principal or delegate. Unless entering the

grounds for specified school business it is forbidden to be on school grounds outside school hours and is considered trespassing. If you wish to use the grounds please speak with the principal.

• Our school has a “No Hat No Play” policy and all students are required to wear their broad brimmed sunhat. You may have heard the recent advice that everyone wears sunscreen each day. Parents are asked to ensure that their child/children arrive at school with sunscreen already applied and we will ask students to reapply sunscreen prior to outdoor play.

• Students require a labelled water bottle every day and will have these in class. Please do not send glass water bottles to school. Thank you.

• All students will be eating a vegetable/fruit snack at approximately 9.45am. Please provide your child with a suitable snack for this break. Items that are very messy, such as watermelon, oranges are best saved for our regular lunch and recess times. Students continue to work during this break and it can cause disruption to learning when items that are very juicy are consumed.

• Healthy nutritious lunch items are encourgaed and our school has a “No lolly” policy for student lunches.

• After school hours: As a small school we often have parents remain at school for a friendly conversation and community chat time. We welcome this and value parents feeling welcome at school. We request that parents are aware that they have the responsibility for their child’s supervision after school hours. School rules are still to be followed to ensure safety for all students and visitors. Thus out of bounds areas still apply and students are to play in accordance with normal school policy such as wearing shoes and a sunhat. We thank parents for their assistance.

• We welcome open communication and value the chance to discuss concerns, your child’s progress and other items. However, we

request that parents please ask for an appointment. We will then schedule a meeting time that is convenient. Thank you.

• A number of consent forms and updates for the 2020 year, including confirmation of emergency details will be sent home this week for parents to update. Can parents please complete these ASAP and return to school. Thank you.

• All parents are requested to park on the school side of the Marengo Road as the traffic travelling past the school can be extremely dangerous. The safety of our students is paramount and students need to be collected from the school grounds and escorted to and from school by parents or their adult guardians. Thank you for your assistance.

• It is essential that the school is advised of changes for your child. This includes allergies, planned collection arrangements at the end of each day and prescribed medicines etc.

• Our schools readers and library books are valuable items and it would be appreciated if parents could please assist their child/children to look after these. If books are returned to school in a damaged state we will be asking for parents to pay for a replacement copy. Thank you.

• If you would like to receive our newsletter by email, please provide Mrs Winkel or Debbie with your email address and advise whether you would like a paper copy or not. We will add you to our distribution list.

• Homework will be sent home each Monday and due back each Friday. This will commence after the conclusion of our Swimming and Water Safety Program. This is an important part of your child’s education and we appreciate students returning their work on time.
