Shanghai, 200120 Illegal GE rice found in Carrefour’s store in Wuhan, China Dear Mr. Antoine Bloch, I am writing to inform you that genetically engineered (GE) rice has contaminated rice sold in Carrefour’s hypermarket in Wuhan, the provincial city of Hubei province in China. China has not authorized commercialization of GE rice, therefore any GE rice found in the market is illegal and has not undergone sufficient safety assessment for environment and health. In late June 2005, Greenpeace collected 9 samples of unpackaged rice sold in Carrefour’s three hypermarkets in Wuhan. These samples were kept in unused plastic containers and sent to GeneScan Analytics GmbH for analyses. One sample, bought from the Shishang hypermarket, was found by the laboratory to be NOS positive, indicating that the rice is genetically engineered. GeneScan is still carrying out further testing to identify what variety is the illegal GE rice. I have attached the testing report at the end of the letter for your reference. The sample has the same testing result as other samples we have collected from Hubei province from February to May 2005. This indicates that illegal GE rice grown in Hubei has contaminated rice sold in your store. In a letter sent in 13 April 2005, Greenpeace already urged Carrefour to start inspecting the rice sold in your stores in China to avoid contamination. Since China has not authorized commercialization of GE rice, any GE rice found in the market is illegal and has not undergone necessary safety assessment. GE rice sold in your store is illegal and poses threat to consumer’s health. We recognize that Carrefour has a global policy not to use GE ingredients in products under Carrefour’s brands, and Carrefour did not consciously choose to sell

GE rice in your stores. We therefore demand Carrefour to: 1. Withdraw and stop selling rice from Hubei, until illegal GE rice was withdrawn

from the seed market, field and the food chain. 2. Start inspecting rice and rice products sold in Carrefour in China to prevent

contamination by illegal GE rice. 3. Commit to a policy that Carrefour will not sell GE rice or use ingredients derived

from GE rice in products sold in Carrefour’s stores in China.

We are looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. Thank you very much for your attention.
