ppliances are like leading actors. They work together with the backdrop and costumes to tell an interesting story. Without them the show just couldn’t go on.

These key elements come in a choice of either built-in, which offers a neat, contemporary look, and flush-fit with no gaps to trap bacteria, or freestanding, which are easy to get at for maintenance, and can be moved to a new home. Keep in mind, though, for freestanding models, foodstuff can get trapped between the appliance and surface.

Almost half of the energy used in the home goes on heating and cooling. So when buying new appliances, look for those with an Energy Star, as they are designed to save on energy, cut costs and help protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Playing a starring role, cooktops have various heating methods – gas, electric or induction. Clean and economical, gas offers precise control, heats quickly and keeps food moist. It also generates less greenhouse gas than traditional electric cooking. Cooking with electric produces a very dry heat that is ideal for baking. Induction is said to be up to 70 percent more efficient than gas and 20 percent more so than electric.

There are numerous configurations, from two cooking-zones, right up to eight and more. Some can be built-in, like the newly launched Elemento Series from Towngas (www.towngasappliance.com) and Kuppersbusch’s (www.kueppersbusch.de) glass ceramic hob, while others sit neatly on a countertop. Teka (www.teka.com) has an extensive range, including uniquely shaped hobs as well as dual fuel models. There are also compact ovens, single and double sized options, as well as wall mounted versions.
