The less spiritual, the more brutal the present,
therefore one must be finer and more spiritual.
That is strength.OTTO FREUNDLICH
zum Internationalen Bildhauersymposium »Steine
ohne Grenzen Bernau 2011«!
Menschen einstehen!

SCHIRMHERR-SCHAFT UNDER THE AUSPICES
to this year‘s International Sculpture Symposium
»Stones Without Borders Bernau as a 2011«! This
workshop will add to the ambitious international
project of a »Road of Peace« a further step with
more sculptures who will set a sign of mutual
understanding, reconciliation and humanity.
Art takes time – and this applies not only to
the completion of a work, but sometimes also
for the realization of an idea. The Jewish artist
Otto Freundlich, killed in the concentration camp
Majdanek, dreamed of a »path of human soli-
darity in commemoration of the liberation,« of
sculptures line connecting peoples from west to
east, which is a visible monument to a peaceful
and tolerant coexistence of di'erent nations.
And the sculptor Leo Kornbrust almost 50 years
later developed the idea of a »European Road of
Sculptures.« Both ideas are the foundation of
the »Road of Peace«, from the Norman coast, via
Paris to Moscow, which gets with every sculpture
symposium a little bit more visible and easy to
experience.
The established sculptures have already set
new accents in the landscape. They cause the
observer to pause and invite for confrontation
with the artwork. In this sense I wish all artists
who participate in the project work force, a spirit
of cooperation and a lot of public attention; and
for visitors interesting meetings and exciting
ideas. Let us stand up every day for international
mutual understanding, tolerance and friendship
among the people!

of Land Brandenburg
WELCOME

Dem Bildhauersymposium in Bernau liegt eine
ganz besondere und vor allem beeindruckende
Idee zugrunde.
Sankt Margarethen statt. In den 80er Jahren hat
das Interesse an diesen gemeinsamen aktiven
Kunstforen im ö'entlichen Raum besonders
stark zugenommen.

»Antriebselement zukunftsorientierter Stadtent-

To the Sculpture Symposium in Bernau is a very
special and particularly powerful concept based.
The German-Jewish humanist and pacifist, Otto
Freundlich had built in the twenties the grand
idea of a »Eoad of Sculptures Paris–Moscow«.
Otto Freundlich, who wanted to send a visible,
unifying symbol against war and human violence,
was murdered in the concentration camp Lublin-
Majdanek. Many years later, in 1971, took Leo
Kornbrust the vision of the artist and wanted
to develop further this road of peace. It should
extend across Europe from Normandy through
to Moscow. Thus arose over the years, numerous
cross-border sculpture projects.
This year a further milestone in Bernau was
born. The working form of the symposium has a
relatively short tradition. The joint work of sculp-
tors, where the public can also track the work
process was held for the first time 1959 in Sankt
Margarethen. In the 80 years the interest in
these joint active forums on art in public spaces
has increased particularly strongly. In the state
of Brandenburg have been the 90 years provided
among others the European-Biennials Niederlau-
sitz a significant contribution to the humanizati-
on of the environment. But also in other places in
Brandenburg numerous symposia and sculpture
parks have long been recognized in their firm po-
sition in the artistic landscape.
Important sculptors such as Professor Wieland
Förster or Professor Werner Stötzer, who died
one year ago, are part of the Brandenburg art
landscape. They too are committed with their
art for tolerance and openness. Despite hostility
and resistance, they went their way in the former
GDR and developed a unique sculptural design
language with which they play a prominent
position in the German sculptures history.
The getting to know the stone, its transfor-
mation, the continuous observation became the
sculptor‘s artistic adventure. In most cases, the
sculptors work in their atelier for their own, the
observer sees the finished sculpture. During the
symposium in Bernau however the visitors could
observe the operations and follow the develop-
ment process, ask questions, and so getting in
contact with the artists. The town of Bernau has
big plans. The sustainability of the project »Art
in Bernau« is based on a sophisticated concept.
It should be understood as a »driving element of
future-oriented urban development«. Earlier this
year an art curator was appointed to profile Bernau
as a »city of sculptures.« Works of outstanding
representatives of the German modern art like
sculptors Waldemar Grzimekor or Walter Arnold,
who once were in the Waldsiedlung belong to.
My thanks to the curator of the city of Bernau,
Prof. Herwig Pöschl, and to Rudolf J. Kaltenbach
and Silvia Christine Fohrer that accompany the
symposium »Stones without Borders« artistically.

»Steine ohne Grenzen« Rudolf J. Kaltenbach
als künstlerischen Leiter für das Symposium
in Bernau zu gewinnen. Unter seiner Regie
arbeiteten sieben Künstler aus Großbritannien,
Russland, Polen, Österreich, der Slowakei und
Deutschland vier Wochen lang an insgesamt 18
Steinen.

Mir bleibt in

You just keep the documentation of a very
special art project in your hands. »Stones Wit-
hout Borders« was the motto of the Internati-
onal Sculpture Symposium, which took place in
October 2011 in Bernau near Berlin. Behind this
title is the idea of a »European Road of Peace –
a Road of Sculptures« in Europe«, which will run
from Paris to Moscow as a sign of reconciliation,
mutual understanding and tolerance. The idea
omes from the German-Jewish painter and sculp-
tor Otto Freundlich, who was among the artists
whose works from the Nazis were designated
and defamed as »degenerate art«. Freundlich
was murdered in 1943 in the concentration camp
Majdanek. His idea, developed in the 1930s to
bring together sculptors from di'erent countries
in one place and make them work together under
the designated theme for some time, lived on,
however, and is now being implemented gradually.
I am delighted that we succeeded to engage
the sculptor and the founder of the project
»Stones Without Borders« Rudolf J. Kaltenbach
as Artistic Director for the symposium in Bernau.
Under his direction seven artists from Great
Britain, Russia, Poland, Austria, Slovakia and
Germany worked for four weeks for a total of 18
stones. Their »open air workshop« was in the city
park Bernau. I found the special feature of this
symposium has been that in addition to experi-
enced artists, six students from two high schools
in Bernau worked on a sculpture. They impressed
with their implementation of their idea, their
tenacity and perseverance to get in touch with
the subject. After all, they also worked on a their
sculpture four weeks – always after school and
during holiday periods.
Eight works of art as a whole emerged during
the symposium and have found their installation
in the city park in Bernau for the next two years,
that will remain their location. They should form
a symbolic line from Bernau over Hobrechtsfel-
de to Berlin and can be viewed by anyone. I will
remain a good memory, that the work of artists
and students in the city park found big public
interest. Whether schools, daycare groups, art
lovers, visitors or simply walkers: many people
who passed by stayed and used the opportunity
to discuss with the artists directly.
The positive response to the International
Sculpture Symposium 2011 shows that we are
on the right track with the concept of »Art in
Bernau« and its associated projects, to enable
new way of experiencing art in public places, I
thank all sponsors that have enabled the project
»Stones Without Borders« and thereby helping
Bernau to become part of the »European Road
of Peace – a Road of Sculptures«. The present
catalogue is now another remembrance of
this successful project. I therefore wish you a
pleasant reading.

steine ohne grenzen WAS UND WO
TO THE HISTORY OF THE
SCULPTOR‘S SYMPOSIA
The sculptor‘s symposia meanwhile grown to a Euro-pean „symposium movement“ goes back to Austrian artist Karl Prantl who marked in 1959 the starting point with the symposium of European sculptors in the Roman‘s stone quarry of St. Margarethen in Bur-genland, Austria.
The idea was that sculptors form their work on a common work space and artists of different artistic styles, countries and nations are brought together, exchange ideas and enrich each other, and bring in in the best case, the symposium and its exhibition in a meta artwork.
In 1961, the first sculpture symposium of the Fede-ral Republic of Germany took place in Kaiserstein-

bruch in Grauhüttelheim place in Lower Franconia. There, the artist heard from building of the Berlin Wall, after which some of them spontaneously mo-ved their work on the site of the parliament founded and the Berlin symposia, the first a so-called „wall Symposium“. (Here could certainly be a bow spanned to the wall segments of the French artist Thierry Noir from 1989, which are set up in Bernau to commemo-rate the fall of the Wall,)
In 1967 the sculptor‘s symposium Krastal was founded in the quarry of Krastal, Austria, which is carried out down to the present day as the only sym-posium without interruption.
Jürgen von Woyski founded the first sculptor‘s symposium in the GDR, the Hoyerswerder sculptor‘s symposium for artists from the GDR and Eastern Eu-ropean states.
Since about 1980 the number of the sculptor‘s symposia has strongly increased. They often are for-med around a common theme and a common place and lead to the installation of sculpture trails.
In 1971 Prof. Leo Kornbrust carried this thought af-ter Saint Wendel in Saarland and founded with the „Street of Peace“, a European frame project to which many symposia - also Bernau n the sense of Otto Freundlich, join.
In this development, the symposium“stones wit-hout borders“, founded in 2001, is one that created one of the longest sculpture trails.

steine ohne grenzen SYMPOSIUM
Stones Without Borders is a sustainable art initiative, starting from the social revolution of art and the »social sculpture« develop the sculpture symposia a special kind of communication on substantive values that can transform the society show for the future ways, demonstrate sustainable creativity for the own environmental design raise opportunities by the playful use of the materials.
It is a matter to raise awareness for the future, to comprise things in the creative industries, which are blossomed in communities and will be carried further. Crisis areas, ecological, economic special items (as Hobrechtsfelder Rieselflächen), problematic urban zones, which are the places which are occupi-ed and designed creatively and will withstand the demands of sustainable development.
Stones Without Borders puts on sustainable realis-tic and promising artistic aims. So many artists have been working for some time in both rural and urban areas with constructional approaches for a soft envi-ronment, a sustainable social structure and a poten-tial help for self help.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE SYMPOSIUM IN BERNAU
The city of Bernau want establish itself as City of sculptures. The starting point are sculptures of fa-mous artists discoverable in the city space and the newly formed »sculpture collection Waldsiedlung«, with before destruction rescued and painstakingly restored art works by Gustav Weidanz, Waldemar Grzimek, Jenny Mucchi-Wiegmann, René Graetz, Heinrich Drake, Walter Arnold, Gerhard Geyer Lore Plietzsch and other artists of the modern figurative art. These sculptures are part of the project »Art in Bernau« and are scientifically supervised by the art curator of the city Bernau and should open out in a permanent exhibition.
Dealing with sculptures do need further efforts in projects, exhibitions and workshops for sculptors to underpin the claim of a sculpture city and to develop a contemporary perspective.
For this purpose a sculpture symposium should take place every two years and in the intervening ye-ars, a sculptor should be invited to an »Artist for resi-dence« event.
The symposium is intended to deal with current is-sues of art and society in the sculpture as a spatial dimension, helping to think the social new and to develop solidarity and human worlds. The idea is combined with the notion of »social sculpture« and an understanding of art from Otto Freundlich to Jo-seph Beuys.
The symposium is intended to exceed in many respects borders between nationalities, between sculptors, between sculpture and audience, between the arts and their media. From the beginning an in-ternational position is sought. by inviting internatio-nal artists
For the first International Sculpture Symposium Bernau near Berlin 2011, the art curator of the city Bernau, Prof. Herwig Pöschl partner has enlisted »Stones Without Borders« for help and appointed Rudolf J. Kaltenbach as artistic director.
With this symposium Bernau wants to also to join sculpture line Berlin – Hobrechtsfelde – Buch created by »Stones Without Borders« .
The concept of the sculpture symposium provides that international artists attend and build a »work-shop under the open sky« together. This Plenair should invite people from Bernau to observe the work on sculptures and for a dialogue with the male and female artists. For their participation, partici-pants will receive a grant, a stone, and organizational support.
The artists will be presented in the an accompany-ing exhibition, which took place 2011 in the Bauhaus Monument »Federal School of the of the former Free Trade Unions«.
The worked out sculptures can be retrieved by the participants out of the exhibition after two years or remain as a permanent loan.
At the suggestion of Rudolf J. Kaltenbach a project with young people from Bernau became part of the symposium«. Here young people work together on a stone under the supervision and advice«. The sculp-ture will be exhibited as well as the works of the par-ticipating artists.

Natur. The sculpture »Stones of Encounter« is made from a Portuguese granite. Encounters at the stone,
meet self the stone. The plastic motion goes into the reduced form of a cuboid. The sculpture is confla-
tionistic which includes the union of opposites forms. As contact-points I refer to the perforations, so I
keep the violations in the process of editing visible and the stone sculpture understood as a connection
between nature and man. The feel of the form is crucial in terms of the concept, the man taman experi-
ences the stone and its form with all their senses, explores the harmony and finds to himself and he also
opens the cycle of nature.

still bleibt.
She works
on a fieldstone and a Brazilian granite for her sculpture »Silence«. The stone rests silent in the world, or
better it represents the silence of the world, of nature. Silent though as it may be it o'ers itself to serve
as a cause for action and so the creative intention would remain closed to itself, silent too. This is what is
shown in my work. The sculpted side of the stone, is a representation of the presence of an intending will
and the unsculpted side is a representation of the silent world that supports the intentions of a will while
the mystical gold marks the flow of the vocal force of creative intention as it penetrates silence desiring
to totally overwhelm it.

sculpture »Conversion Double Cross« from a Finnish Spectrolite shows us an ancient formula, the Greek
cross. If one »goes« from the opposite side in the sculpture one recognizes in the negative space again
a latin cross. The sculpture is in all four directions open. The positive and negative form, the vertical and
diagonal in the shape of the cross are the creative focus of his oeuvres, he also works, as here, mostly his
work out of a single block of stone. Rudolf J. Kaltenbach says: »I‘m aware of process traces, which are in
contrast to the polished surfaces. This is a formal language with fractions, so I move closer to reality. The
sculptures live of tactile apprehension – they are made visible thoughts.«

der Last. Das groß Gedachte kann klein werden, aber dieses Kleine bleibt!« For the symposium edited
Erhart Kassian a Portuguese granite. The sculpture includes a field stone and a small stone between the
two pillars. The theme is inspired by the myth of Sisyphus. Erhart Kassian says, »A sincere e'ort and
commitment beyond a chosen life‘s work, a constant search, crossing borders, permanent bridging over, a
repeatedly picking up the burden. The big image can become small, but this little one remains!

Auf Vorschlag des künstlerischen Leiters Rudolf J. Kaltenbach nahmen am 8. Internationalen Bildhau-
ersymposium Jugendliche aus Bernau teil. Organisiert wurde dies vom Kulturamt Bernau. Grundlage
On a proposal
by artistic director Rudolf J. Kaltenbach, some young people from Bernau attended the 8th Internatio-
nal Sculpture Symposium. This was organized by the O.ce for Cultural A'airs Bernau. The director and
lecturer on site was over the entire duration of the symposium, Rudolf J. Kaltenbach. Participated have
students from the Barnim Highschool and the Praetorius-School in Bernau. Basis of the artistic task is to
deal with the material of sandstone, the participants have never realized before a sculpture. They develop
a »artificial heart« which may reflect their understanding of art at best. Working in a team, development
of new perspectives, training of and endurance are part of the new experience. Peers, other young people
and parents are excited and proud of the young sculptors. Many park visitors change their imagination of
the Facebook generation. The permanent placement of the sculpture opposite to the area of their school
sets the sculpture in relationship with the school.

2 people, 1 stone, 0 clue – 4 hours later it looked quite different, however. Under the good leadership, I have learned a lot. Also the progress was very strong against my expectations. AND fun also were taken.

Today was a sad thing. The hand of our sculpture broke off. Fortunately, we have early enough brought her to the to doll doctor and so she was stuck again. Lucky you!

Today we made a whole new experience. We could now set the holes so that the stone may stand well. I did not expect that this is so difficult.

The veins look very good. I would say our art work is nea-ring completion.

steine ohne grenzen BESUCHER UND PUBLIKUM
One concern of the »open-air workshop« is to bring art into the social space of the City Park Bernau to provide visitors with a wide range of contacts and to initiate dialogues about art and society. In addition to the random, unexpected, spontaneous or planned visits, guided tours for school groups and visitors rounded off the program.
It should be remembered that 1979, the former in Frankfurt Director of Cultural Affairs Hilmar Hoff-mann published his book »Culture for all. Perspecti-ves and Models« published and since then, the ques-tion of cultural participation of wide segments of the population belongs to the standard of cultural policy. Even in the GDR were supranational pleinirs often. in cooperation with factories and combines, Kulturbund and VBK part of cultural production
In late 1979, the New York Guggenheim Museum dedicated the first German Joseph Beuys a compre-hensive retrospective. Beuys at the time was 58 years old. Joseph Beuys created the imagination, that each man could contribute by creative action good of the community and thereby have a forming influence on society. From this idea came the much-quoted thesis of »social sculpture«: »Everyone is an artist« by Joseph Beuys spoke first time in 1967 as part of his political activities and which would break down the barriers between artistic genius and »ordinary« people.

SCULPTURES LINE FROM BERLIN TO BERNAU
In 2001, Rudolf J. Kaltenbach founded with Silvia Ch Fohrer the first symposium »Stones Without Bor-ders« with boulder stones that have been recovered from the clay pits of Berlin.
Meanwhile, span eight international symposia and thereby worked out sculptures Berlin-Brandenburg. 2011, the International Sculpture Symposium »Stones Without Borders« in Bernau bei Berlin 2011 is the connecting block to Berlin. The work continues in Buch 2012 and recalls the indescribable propaganda exhibition »Degenerate Art« 75 years ago.
Starting from the car park Hobrechtsfelder Chaus-see one can hike and experience the sculpture line on a route of currently five kilometers on foot or by bike. The Town Park in Bernau forms the keystone of the present the sculpture line. Trails are barrier free.
