Welcome to Fukuoka - Get orientated!

Trains ¬ 철도

There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Sub-

way”, and “JR”. The subway links the two

city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Air-

port. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as

Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel out-

side Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new

Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima.

후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테쓰 전철’ ‘지하철’

‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타,

덴진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘

니시테쓰 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸,

가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나

신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.

Buses ¬ 버스

Go almost anywhere aboard Nishitetsu Bus

in Fukuoka City! Rates vary by distance, but

are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p.

5 ~ 6 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Su-

miyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofuku-

machi. Combined with Showa Bus, you can go

as far as Itoshima from Hakata Station.

후쿠오카 시내를 편리하게 돌아볼 수 있는 니시테쓰

버스. 요금은 승차거리에 따라 상이. 후쿠오카 도심부에

한해서 100엔 버스를 운행 중. 운행 지역은 하카타역,

스미요시, 야쿠인 에키마에, 덴진, 고후쿠마치가 포함

된다 (5~6쪽 지도의 노란색으로 표시된 지역에 한함).

니시테쓰 버스 외에 쇼와버스가 ‘하카타역~이토시마

방면’ 노선을 운행 중.

How to ride 버스 타는 방법

● Check the destination on the front and

side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via

the center doors.

● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board.

If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the

sensor, ticket not required.

● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the

monitor next to a driver. The fee appears un-

der the ticket number.

● Fees are displayed on the monitor above

the driver. Match your ticket number to get

your fee.

● Push the stop button to alert the driver that

you want to get off at the next stop.

● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box

next to the driver and get off from the front

door. If you need change, drop cash into the

box next to the driver. When you are using ni-

moca, wave your card above the sensor.

● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠

있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가

오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다

● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에

정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을

때에는 승차구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이

경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음).

● 정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로

운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권

번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다.

● 목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고

안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다.

● 운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의

운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할

때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지

않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를

갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에

카드를 터치한다.

Public phones are becoming scarce. They ac-

cept ¥10 and ¥100 coins and prepaid cards.

bile phones are available at the Airport.

공중전화의 수가 많이 줄어들었으나 10엔, 100엔

동전과 선불 카드로 사용할 수 있다. 휴대폰 로밍

Ask a local where to go for great

soba (buckwheat noodles) in

Daimyo, and they’ll most likely

point you in the direction of this

60-year-old restaurant. Last July, Yabukin

relocated to the ground floor of a grand

old building and the traditional courtyard

gives you the feeling that you’re stepping

back in time. Pass through the gate, slip off

your shoes at the entrance and admire the

stylish wooden interior. The noodles sold

here are handmade every morning by pro-

prietor Mr. Goto. “Because soba is such a

simple food, it’s impossible to hide any mis-

takes. I always take great care when mak-

ing the noodles,” he says. The quality of the

flour used is also of upmost importance, so

Mr. Goto tested varieties from all over the

country for their taste and fragrance. Cur-

rently, he uses two varieties from Kagoshi-

ma, which he says are as good as any from

수타소바 야부킨다이묘에서 소바 가게라고 말하자면 바로 이 곳! 창업

60년, 다이묘에서 35년간의 역사를 지켜온 인기점이

작년 7월, 여기 ‘쇼우난쿄’로 이전했다. 쇼우난쿄는

다이묘에 본점을 둔 죠쿠우간장의 3대 사장이 1936

년에 지은 유서 있는 저택이다. 신발을 벗고 가게 안에

들어서면, 실내가 목조로 꾸며져 멋스럽고, 창문

저편으로 보이는 작은 안뜰도 정취가 묻어난다. 소바는

2대째 주인 고토우 씨가 매일 개점 전에 ‘오오다마우치’

라 불리는 수법으로 한번에 50인분의 면을 뽑아낸다. “

소바는 심플한 요리여서 속임수가 듣지 않습니다. 항상

긴장감을 가지고 만듭니다.” 맛을 좌우하는 소바가루는

일본 방방곡곡에서 주문하여 맛과 향을 테스트했다.

현재 규슈에서 사용하는 것은 카코섬의 후키아게와

키모츠키로부터 가져오고 있다. 소바를 후루룩 넘기면

향기가 코로 올라오고, 씹을수록 입 안에 달콤함이

감돈다. 계절에 따라 기간한정 메뉴도 있으니 점원에게

물어보자. 단품요리도 다양하게 준비되어 있으며, 특히

다시마키(850엔)는 팬이 많다. 잘 구운 계란에 칡으로

끈끈함을 더한 팥소가 더해졌다. 품격있는 달콤함에

자꾸만 생각나게 한다.

suring a great taste, this process also helps

to remove the excess fat, making it surpris-

Okinawan cooking is that, even when the

portions are big, it’s still healthy. The mo-

zuku somen (thin noodles with seaweed) is

another interesting dish, which tastes great

route 202 runs from Fukuoka all the

way to Nagasaki. The part connect-

ing Hakata and Tenjin is called Ko-

kutai-doro and is one of Fukuoka’s

busiest thoroughfares. Continue on

towards Kego, though, and the road changes into a

quieter, more upscale street. The name also chang-

es, to Keyaki-dori.

Keyaki-dori has wide sidewalks lined with trees

that filter the sunlight on a hot day, making it a

pleasant place for a stroll. Along each side of the

street you can find chic apartment buildings, ap-

parel and jewelry stores, fashionable hair salons,

innovative restaurants, art galleries and more. The

area has a distinctive high-class feel, but at the

same time part of its appeal is that it also has the

feel of a place where people go about their daily

lives. You can easily pick up something tasty for

dinner at a Japanese food store or Italian deli, or

take care of some errands at a florist, bicycle shop

There are also a large number

of restaurants and cafés, ranging

from genuine Thai food to Japa-

nese homecooking to long-estab-

lished cafés. Wander off the main street for some

more unconventional offerings; you shouldn’t have

to walk far to find an interesting place. Bakery

& Café Papparayray, for example, is housed in a

renovated traditional old building that was for-

merly a draper’s shop. Kira Kira Café Tonerico,

meanwhile, is hidden at the end of a street that

passes under a car park. Both have a welcoming,

hand-crafted feel.

Keyaki-dori is only 800 meters long, running

from Kego intersection to Akasaka 3-chome inter-

section, but it packs a lot of charm into that seem-

ingly short distance. More than just a fashionable

street, take a stroll along it once and you are sure

to want to come back again and again.f

갤러리 등이 즐비한 이곳에서는 후쿠오카시내 다른

곳에는 없는 품격을 느낄 수 있습니다.

고급스러운 분위기를 내면서도 생활감을 느끼게 하는

가게가 많은 것이 게야키도오리의 특징입니다. 일본 전통

식재료를 사용하는 오므라이스 전문점, 오래된 찻집

등이 영업 중입니다. 독특한 가게를 찾는다면 골목으로

들어가 보세요. 게야키도오리 북쪽과 남쪽에 각각

단독건물인 카페가 있는데요, 그 중 하나인 ‘베이커리&

카페 팟파라이스’는 원래 일본 전통의상을 취급하는

가게였다고 합니다. 순수 일본풍과 오래된 민가가

만나서 만들어진 곳입니다. ‘키라키라 카페 도네리코’

는 주차장 지하에 만들어진 통로를 거쳐야만 입구가

나타나는 숨은 명소입니다. 두 곳 모두 손수 공을 들인

게고 교차로에서 시작되는 게야키도오리는 아카사카

Taguchi Shoten Keyaki, near to Kego intersection, is a sec-

ondhand record shop that has been open for more than 40

years. During that time, records have been replaced by CDs,

which in turn are increasingly being replaced by downloads, but Ta-

guchi Shoten has steadfastedly refused to move with the times and

stepping through the door here is like stepping back half a century

in time. Around 30,000 records and CDs are on sale, including many

rare seven-inch EPs, from genres ranging from old-school Japanese

pop to classical. The 1960s Japanese record covers displayed on the

오늘 만나볼 게스트는 전세계 요가 워크숍을

오거나이즈하고 있으며 요가를 지도하며 여러

요가인들과 교류 중이다. 후쿠오카에서는 요가

스튜디오의 선구자격으로 유명한 YOGA BREEZE

의 대표 박히키씨. 도착하자마자 귀엽다는 외침과

함께 숍으로 달려간 그녀는 싱싱한 이탈리아산

과일을 사용한 모레노 체드로니의 잼을 골랐다.

단지 맛있기만 한 것이 아니라 새로운 맛과 먹는

방법을 제안하는 잼으로, 여러 분야에서 활약 중인

히키씨를 위해 태어난 듯한 상품이다.

히키씨는 한국 서울에서 고등학교를 졸업한 후 대학

진학을 위해 미국 캘리포니아로 떠났다. 그리고 일

때문에 찾은 비버리힐즈에서 그녀의 운명에 큰 영향을

미치게 될 요가를 만났다. 그 후, 요가에 대한 호기심이

그녀를 인도로 이끌었고 정신세계의 강한 탐구가

후쿠오카의 요가 스튜디오 설립으로 이어졌다.

매트 위에서 요가를 지도함은 물론이고 일상생활

속에서도 요가의 정신 철학을 중요시하며 실천 중인

히키씨는 원칙적으로는 비건(순수 채식주의자)이다.

대개 동물성 식품의 섭취뿐 아니라 모피나 가죽옷

등도 사용하지 않는 사람을 비건이라고 일컫는데,

한 사람의 여성, 요가 인스트럭터, 스튜디어 대표,

그리고 때로는 영어, 한국어, 일본어를 자유자재로

구사하는 워크숍 통역사로서 활약하는 그녀. 이렇게

바쁜 가운데에서도 하루하루를 충실하게, 즐겁게

보내는 그녀는 생활방식으로써의 요가를 많은

사람들에게 알리고 싶다고 한다. 인연을 소중히

생각하고 과거와 미래, 사람과 사람이 이어지는 ‘

현재’에 중심을 두고 생활하는 것이 비결이라고.

히키에게 있어서 라이프 스타일을 논할 때 빼놓을

수 없는 것이 무엇인지를 취재 전에 미리 물어두었더니

미국에서 히키와 만난 이후로 계속 함께 하고 있는

파트너는 ‘두말할 필요 없이 나!’라는 코멘트를

보내왔다. 그런 것 같다고 말하며 웃는 히키씨는 그와

함께 카페에서 보내는 시간을 정말로 좋아한다고.

카페 안쪽의 VIP룸을 보고서는 요가 개인 레슨도

가능하겠다며 들떠하고, 돌아가기 전에는 파트너를

위해 선물을 고르는 그녀. 그 모습이 너무나도

사랑스럽다.

This month, our guest is Heeki

Park, the founder and manager

of a well-known yoga studio in the

city, Yoga Breeze. She organizes work-

shops around the world, teaches classes

and facilitates exchanges between yogin

(practitioners of yoga). Upon entering the

café, she was taken by the chic interior

and didn’t spend long deciding on her or-

der - a scone with Moreno Cedroni jam,

made from fresh Italian fruit.

Heeki is from Seoul. After high school,

she decided to attend university in Cali-

fornia and it was here that she first en-

countered yoga. Her interest in it took

her to India and then Fukuoka, where she

established her studio.

Although she tries to follow a vegan diet

as closely as possible, she had no prob-

lem ordering the chocolat gateau and

ice-cream parfait (¥924). "It won't make

me happy if I follow veganism strictly,"

she admitted with a smile. "I want to eat

what my body wants, so I won't follow any

strict diet.”

Already living actively as an yoga in-

structor, studio manager and English, Ko-

rean and Japanese interpreter, she wants

to spread yoga as a way of life. When we

asked about the most important things in

her life, she told us, smiling, that her partner,

who she met in America is number one.

Tucked into the back of ELLE CAFÉ

the VIP room caught her eye and she re-

marked “it would be ideal for a private

yoga class”. Seems she’s always has yoga

on her mind, and her aforementioned sig-

nificant other, as she did a little souvenir

shopping in the ELLE CAFÉ shop too!

Welcome to Yamakasa -Welcome to Fukuoka!You’ve probably already spotted some half-naked men running around town. These men in loincloths are participants in Fukuoka’s most anticipated annual festival, Hakata Gion Yamakasa. The highlight of the festival kicks off at exactly 4:59 am on July 15th when thousands of men from seven districts race through the streets carrying decorative, one-ton floats. Spectators line the streets cheering them on by shouting “oisa-oisa” and splashing them with water to keep them cool. Although the teams are timed, the event is not considered a race. The most successful team must exhibit cooperation and solidarity. This teamwork is not limited to just the runners. Local townspeople also participate by preparing for the festival and building floats almost a year in advance. We hope you’ll find this special map of use on the morning of the 15th. Don’t sleep in, and if you bring a camera, have a plastic bag handy because it gets really wet!

The Kameda Brothers' Nationwide TourKyuden Memorial GymnasiumThe WBC world youth title match will be held for the first time

ever on these shores in Fukuoka this month. Tomoki Kameda is

the current bantamweight champion and he will be defending

his title at the event. Tomoki is the youngest of the three Kame-

da brothers, a famous boxing trio from Osaka. He has yet to be

beaten in his professional career, which he started 4 years ago

at the age of 17. His oldest brother, and former world flyweight

champion, Koki, has said that Tomoki boasts the most natural

talent of the three siblings. He first travelled to Mexico in 2007

and now operates there full-time. His nickname is "El Mexicanito"

which means "the little Mexican" and he is a popular fighter in

his new home. Middle brother, Daiki, will fight in a non-title match

on the same day. In the women's competition, Yuko Kuroki from

Fukuoka will challenge WBC female youth world champion for

the atom weight title. A percentage of the event's profits will

be donated to the relief effort in Tohoku.

夏越し祭Summer FestivalKego Shrine

Held every year at Kego Shrine,

right in the middle of Tenjin, this

festival sees many local people

gather to pray for good health

over the summer months. As well

as Shinto rituals, there will also be

a stage with live music and tradi-

tional performing arts, a flea mar-

ket and street stalls.

여름 대축제. 통과하면 재앙을 면할 수

있다는 '띠의고리'와 같은 행사 외에도

신사 내에 설치된 무대에서는 라이브와

전통 예능 등 다양한 퍼포먼스가

펼쳐진다. 참배에는 많은 네오 야타이(

포장마차)가 늘어서고, 함께 열리는 벼룩

시장은 매년 많은 사람들로 붐빈다.

The Hozuki (ground cherry) Fes-

tival is an annual treat at Atago

Shrine. Belled hozuki are on sale,

with proceeds going to the Tohoku

earthquake and tsunami relief ef-

fort. Other events include a yukata

contest, watermelon splitting and

the chance to try international cui-

sine made by a volunteer group.

おおむた「大蛇山」まつりOmuta "Snake" FestivalOmatsuri Hiroba

6-meter tall, 10-meter long, gi-

ant fire-breathing snakes would

normally be enough to persuade

anybody to stay indoors. At this

300-year-old festival, though,

the snakes are really just floats,

so more than 400,000 people

come out to enjoy the fun every

year. The dances and fireworks

are also not to be missed!

오오무타「다이쟈야마」축제매년 40만명 이상 방문하는 300년

이상의 역사를 가진 전통 있는 축제.

시내 각지에서 출발하는 높이 6M , 길이

10M,에 다다르는 구렁이를 상징하는

거대한 「다이쟈야마 」가 딱 벌어진

입에서 일곱 가지 색의 불을 뿜으며

행진한다. 또 한가지의 볼거리는 총 1

만 명의 시민에 의한 춤이다. 하늘에

큰 원의 불꽃이 수놓아지면서 축제는

¥1,000 Fukuoka night ◊ CruisesFukuoka City will operate Hakata Bay cruis-

es on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from

July 22 to August 28 (and on Monday, Aug.

15). The boats will start from the Hakata pier

at 7:10 p.m. and sail past Nokonoshima, Odo-

Marinoa, Seaside Momochi, and Nishi Park be-

fore returning to the pier 80 minutes later at

8:30 p.m. Those taking the cruise will have the

chance to view the lovely night scenes in Mo-

mochi and other areas of the city while enjoy-

ing the cool sea breeze. Each cruise will take

the first 160 arrivals as passengers. Those

wishing to make reservations should apply by

telephone after July 4 (9:00 a.m. ~ 6:00 p.m.).

will be accepted until 5:00 p.m.

Terrestrial digital ◊ Broadcasts Begin July 24Analogue broadcasting will end on Sunday,

July 24, and digital broadcasting will begin

the next day, ushering in the age of terres-

trial digital broadcasts. After that date, ana-

logue television sets will require the instal-

lation of a terrestrial digital broadcast tuner

or other devices to receive broadcasts. A

section will be set up in the first floor lobby

of city hall, each ward office, and citizens’

centers from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. July 1

to August 26 to explain and give advice on

receiving the new broadcasts. Meanwhile,

trouble has arisen from companies pretend-

ing to be television ratings companies and

illegally demanding money for the receipt of

digital broadcasts. Remember that fees are

not required for tuners receiving terrestrial

digital broadcasts.

duced rates to fishermen using the park’s

fishing pier between 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

fee of ¥500 will be halved to ¥500 and ¥250

respectively. The T-shaped piers at the park

are made of steel and extend 386 meters out

to the sea. One is six meters wide and 120 me-

ters long, while the other is six meters wide

and 180 meters long. Parrot fish, horse mack-

erel, sea bass, and flounder are in season from

July through August. Anglers can either bring

their own equipment and bait, or rent poles

and buy bait at the shop in the park.

Fukuoka City Marathon 2011◊ Applications will soon be accepted for those

wishing to run in the City Marathon Fukuoka

2011 on Sunday, October 23. Two five-kilo-

meter marathons will be run after the 7:55

a.m. opening ceremony at the Yahoo Dome.

Those wanting to run the half-marathon must

be 18 years old or older, not in high school, and

able to complete the course in 120 minutes.

The participation fee is ¥4,000. The five-ki-

lometer course is for children in junior high

or high school able to complete the course in

40 minutes. The fee for junior high school stu-

dents is ¥1,500 and that for high school stu-

dents is ¥2.000. There is also a five-kilometer

wheelchair course, which participants must

be able to finish in 30 minutes. ● For details,

cepted from July 4 to August 3.

new Hazard Map for Floods◊ Heavy rainfalls of short duration concentrated

in small areas can cause great damage. There-

fore, Fukuoka City has created a Flood Hazard

Map showing the areas where flooding is likely

to occur during heavy rains, and information

how to seek refuge. The map is being distrib-

uted to all households in the city. It is also avail-

able at all ward offices, branch offices, and the

information plaza on the first floor of City Hall.

It is possible to visually recognize the high and

low land areas, so it will be a handy reference

when deciding on the route for refuge. The back

is used as a disaster prevention map showing

sites where damage is expected to occur, as

well as refuge sites. It’s a good idea to use the

map to walk out the route from one’s home to

a refuge in advance, avoiding bridges or low-

lying areas that might be flooded.
