Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, for the weekend of a lifetime! You’re invited to the most wild, most outrageous, most fantabulous circus you’ve ever attended! There will be carnival games, treats, and spectacles to see which you’re bound to enjoy, but don’t worry, we’ve made sure to cage the circus freaks! This issue of the Jersey Key is dedicated solely to the most magnificent Key Club event of the year: District Convention. This year at the 65th annual New Jersey District Convention, you’ll be able to “Ride the Carousel of Service” with hundreds of other devoted Key Club members from across the state for a truly tremendous time. Our District Convention’s theme, Cirque du Service, is sure to be a great time for all, whether you are an officer, an advisor, a general member, or anything in between. As we come together to celebrate the end of an amazing year of service and fabulous achievements, we’re also ringing in a new year of fun and excitement! District Convention will be held at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania from April 8th-10th, 2011. Ami Shah LTG Division 3 I hope all of you Key Club members are ready to Ride the Carousel of Service with the NJ District’s new Children Specialized Hospital Fundraiser: Generosity Rocks! Generosity Rocks is a musical talent competition that will be held district wide this current service year. Anyone can participate in this competition, whether the person is in Key Club or not. As long as one of the participants is in high school, the act can participate. The first round will take place in your corresponding divisions and should definitely be a blast! The second round will take place regionally, and then there will be a final competition deciding the final winner! As Key Club members, it is your job and responsibility to attend your Divisional Generosity Rocks or even try to participate. Each Divisional Generosity Rocks will be unique to one’s division, complete with amazing and talented acts, important and possible celebrity judges, food, merchandise, and so much more! Make sure you talk to your Lieutenant Governor about where your Generosity Rocks will be held today, so you can get all your friends to attend. The winner of Generosity Rocks will be able to perform at the 2011 New Jersey District Convention, where Key Club members from all over New Jersey will be able to hear them. The winner will also have the chance to perform at a formal Children’s Specialized Hospital event with thousands of people watching. Make sure to get involved with this new fundraiser that all Key Club members are talking about! HeyNJKeyClub!Do you know thatfeelingyougetwhileridingacarouselorwhenyouknock down all the bottles in the ball toss at theboardwalk?Well,that’showwefeelwhenweserveatandfundraiseforChildren’sSpecializedHospital,thelargestpediatricrehabilitationhospitalintheUnitedStatesandthe2010-2011NewJerseyDistrictProject.But, likemissingthelastbottleintheball toss, thatfeelingcannotbetrulycompleteifwedonotreachthegoalswesetforourselves.
Ijustwantedtotakethisopportunitytoremindyouaboutthisyear’sfundraisingandservicegoalsforCSH.The2010-2011FundraisingGoalis$75,401.65and theServiceGoal is 15,700 hours. KeyClub is like a carnival inmanyways.Thereareabunchofdifferentacts,ordifferentKeyClubs,whichworktogethertocreatesomethingincredible.Whetheryou’reputtingtogetheragreatshowor a real difference in theworld around usa central focal pointmust bedecideduponby theringleader,orKeyClubInternational.Wellin1946attheKeyClubInternationalConvention,weweregiven this central focus, thismajor emphasis.Attheconvention,KeyClubInternationalgaveusthesimplephrase,“Children:TheirFutureourFocus”andsincethenKeyClubmembersthroughouttheworldhavebeenworkingtogethertofocusonthefutureofchildreneverywhere.Yearafteryearwebuildschools,paintplaygrounds,andget involvedinthelivesofchildren.Getting involved is so easy, in factmostofyourclubsareprobablyalreadyparticipatinganddon’tevenknowit!Ifyourserviceprojectsinvolvehelping children, you’re taking part in theMEP!SomeprojectideaswhichwouldpertaintotheMajorEmphasisProgramwouldbethingsliketutoringkids,donatingtoystoalocalchildren’shospital,orputtingonacarnivalatapre-school.Sogetout thereandclownaroundwithsomelocalkidsasyouandyourclubhelpbetterthefutureforchildreneverywhere,whileparticipatingintheMajorEmphasisProgram.

If you think tightropewalking orperforming acrobatic stunts of what KiwanisInternationalhassetouttodowiththeEliminateProject.SeekingtoliterallyeliminateMaternalandNeonatalTetanusoffthefaceoftheplanetby2015,whatmayseemlikeadauntingtasktosome,isallinaday’sworkfortheKiwanisFamily.
Announced at theKiwanis InternationalConventionthispastsummer,theEliminateProjectis set out to change theworld for hundreds ofmillionsofindividualsinremoteareasacrosstheworld.TeamingupwithUNICEF to do so, thiscertainlyisn’tacircusact.KiwanisInternationalplanstoraise$110milliontovaccinate129millionmothersandtheirfuturebabies.Takingthelivesof over 60,000babies and30,000mothers eachyear,Tetanusbringsexcruciatingpaintothosewhohaveit,resultingfromtheprolongedcontractionofskeletalmusclefibers.
AlthoughUNICEF has already eliminatedMaternalandNeonatalTetanus(MNT)incountriesacrosstheglobe,40countriesthroughoutAfrica,Asia,EuropeandNorthAmericaarestillplaguedbythedeadlydisease.YoumaywonderwhyKiwanisandUNICEFarefocusingonthisissueandtheanswerissimple,withadiseasethatcanbepreventedwithasimplevaccineandsafehealthcaremethods,whynotsetouttoeradicateitfromthefaceoftheEarth. Q: How can I run for Lieutenant Governor?
A: Thanks so much for utilizing the advice form feature on the district website. To run for the position of Lieuteant Governor, you must first contact your Lieutenant Gover-nor and they will be able to tell you when and where elections are being held, or you can look it up in the elections packet. Once you decide if you’re definitely go-ing to run, let your LTG know and they’ll be able to help you out. Go through the elections packet to see what is required of you, but you will need to memorize all the questions in the packet and write a 3-5 minute speech. Further details are in the packet, but please don’t hesitate to contact your current LTG to see what ex-actly the position involves because it’s ex-tremely involved and it takes an immense amount of time and dedication.

KatherineCanavanKeyClubofJamesCaldwellWESTCALDWELL-DuringKeyClubweek,JamesCaldwell’sKeyClubannuallytriestorecognizethefacultyofJCHSandthankthemforallthesupporttheyhavegivenKeyClub.Thisyear,ourKeyClubhad33membersmeetafterschoolandputtogethertravelcupsthateachcontainedhotchocolate,ateabag,andcoffeepacketforeachteachertoshowthemthatwe“AppreciateYouaLatte.”TheclubpassedtheseouttheWednesdaybeforeTeacher’sConventionforourschool’sfacultysotheywouldhavesomethingtokeepthemwarmintheupcomingcoldmonths.ThiswasareallygreatprojectbecauseitshowsJCHShowbigKeyClubisinthecommunityandalsoremindsKeyClubbersthattherearemanypeoplethathavehelpedtheclubgetittowhereitis.
Bloomingdale Pride Day/Alex’s Lemonade Stand
JulieRoosmaKeyClubofButlerOnSeptember25th,ButlerHighSchoolKeyClubsetupanAlex’sLemonadeStandatBloomingdale’sPrideDay.PrideDayisaneventheldeveryyearinBloomingdalethatbenefitsthepeopleofthetown;thiseventshowcaseslocalbusinesses,groupsthatraisemoneyforcharity(likeus),andfungamesandactivities).BeingapartofPrideDayhelpsletthepeopleofourcommunitygettoknowourKeyClubanditalsogivesustheopportunitytofundraiseforagoodcause. At this year’s PrideDay,we sold a variety of drinks(mostly lemonade) to raisemoney for theAlex’sLemonadeStandcharity.ThischaritybeganwhenagirlnamedAlexwhowasdiagnosedwithCanceratayoungage,decidedtostartalemonadestandtoraisemoneytopayforhertreatments.AfterAlexpassedawayin2004,herlegacycontinuedthroughtheorganization:Alex’sLemonadeStand,whichraisesmoneytoresearchchildhoodcancerforallchildren.Inadditionto theAlex’sLemonadeStand,wealsosoldribbonsfor$1tosupporttheChildren’sSpecializedHospital.Overall,wesoldenoughribbonstomake$105forCSHandwemade$300forAlex’sLemonadeStand.AllofourmembersweredelightedthatwehadanothersuccessfulfundraiseratPrideDay.
