Dear Readers,Sport as a form of recreation is a relatively new thing in Indonesia. Before this country was colonized by the Dutch, sports were based on traditional practices and done so for cultural purposes rather than for fun. In Nias, the traditional sport of wall jumping (lompat batu) can still be found, which was once used to train warriors to jump over enemy walls. This sport takes a lot of practise, time and skill and the brick walls jumped over are up to two-metres in height. This makes me wonder why Indonesia doesnt do better in the high jump at the Olympics.

What Indonesia does do well at in international competitions is badminton. This sport was actually brought to Indonesia

by the Dutch during their colonization, along with football, of which we see people playing everywhere and is a favourite pastime of many. In an old print titled T Weeshuys Op Batavia by Johan Nieuhoff, dated 1682 (image above), it shows daily life at an orphanage in Batavia. In the left corner of the print, there are two young boys each holding a racquet, a third boy throwing a shuttle cock out of the window towards them, and a fourth man standing in the middle, as though he were keeping score and being the umpire. The Dutch like to

think this image is proof that they invented the game and I would agree that it is proof that they brought it to Indonesia, however a form of the sport was played in ancient Greece and Egypt so I dont think the Dutch invented it, sorry guys.

So, what do we have for you this issue? Sports and humour and its a great issue. Sutton talks about our local football team, Persija, and how you can get into supporting them and experiencing a true Indonesian football match. Petersen has a great read about Movember, the month where men all around the world grow their moustaches in support of research for testicular cancer. Jacques R. D. has a funny little read about kasti, an Indonesian version of rounders, Leysner brings you sport and humour applications for your mobile devices and I went to Macau to watch the UFCs debut in Asia just so I could tell you all about it! For the ladies, we have a new contributor, Lily Akpuaka who is going to help you get motivated towards getting that gorgeous figure for New Years. So keep fit and keep laughing, folks!

Persija is an acronym for Persatuan Sepakbola Indonesia Jakarta and their passionate followers are known as Jakmania. Despite finding victory elusive over the last decade Persija remain one of the biggest clubs in the country yet they remain the club people love to hate.

Middle class Jakartans loathe match day when their trips to their favourite mall can be caught up in a procession of vehicles big and small carrying fans to a home game. They at least would have been happy over the last few seasons as incidents in and around their home stadium of Bung Karno in Senayan have forced the club to play their home games as far away as Malang, Yogyakarta, Semarang or Solo. There was even one game played last season at the PTIK Stadium near Blok M without any fans present.

While it is convenient to label all Persija fans as Jakmania not everyone is a fully paid up, card carrying member of the official supporters club. The Jakmania itself is one of the better run supporters clubs in the country with a structure on a par with any organization and hold elections every couple of years to decide on a new leader to represent the interests of the fans.

Match day sees the Jakmania try and bring their organizational muscles to bear. There are district coordinators who hire transport to shuttle-in supporters from their area while other volunteers take care of security issues in and around the field.

It doesnt always work of course. Witness the volatile game with Persib Bandung last season which ended with a number of fans assaulted and killed, one ostensibly for wearing blue; the colour of Persib.

As well as the Jakmania, the largest fan group, there are other groups that are trying to carve out their own identity. The Casuals for example are a group of lads who take their inspiration from the Casual movement of the early 1980s in England that took over football terraces for a while. Like their UK antecedents they eschew club colours, preferring to wear branded clothing like Lacoste, Fred Perry or Adidas.

Another distinctive group are the Ultras whose inspiration comes from the Italian Ultras. Loud and brash, they favour large banners and flares and they occupy their own section of the Bung Karno Stadium, adding to the colour and the atmosphere of match day.

Visiting fans have their own section of the stadium, but few clubs travel with large numbers of fans and those that do are treated with respect by the bulk of the home support; when arranging for visiting supporters the two supporters clubs will liaise between themselves and certainly within the Bung Karno Stadium, it is a common sight to see a handful of Persija fans in the away enclosure providing an extra layer of security.

Persija are one of the few clubs in the country who regularly take followings away from home. It is something they have had to get accustomed to of course in recent years as they have been forced to play so far from home. It is not uncommon to see something like 1,000 Persija fans travel by rail or bus across Java to cheer on their heroes and again the journeys will have been organized well in advance. One away game saw them travel by train to Semarang where they were met by fans of PSIS, the local team there.

The PSIS fans arranged some basic snacks and rudimentary toiletries before the Persija fans carried on their trip across country in trucks and buses. Talk to anyone involved in Indonesian football and they will all say the highlight is the fans. Quite simply the atmosphere is amazing. I recall one game at Lebak Bulus, which Persija used before moving to the Bung Karno. Lebak Bulus is a much more compact stadium only holding 12,500.

At this particular game the stadium was full long before kick-off and the noise was deafening. Ive been to games in England, Italy and Germany over the years but have never seen much that could rival that night. It was non-stop singing and dancing from all sides and corners of the stadium. For once the clich that a stadium was rocking was true.

Just to confuse things there are two leagues in Indonesia and the two leagues each boast a Persija and a Persitara. The other league is known as the Indonesia Premier League and is the one set up under the auspices of the local football association. Both the ISL and the IPL are due to merge by the end of 2014 at the latest.

Persija, the IPL version, have been told by a court of law they may not use the Persija name. The fans have told them they cannot use the name and indeed Persija IPL last season played their home games in distant Madiun in front of a few bemused locals.

Persija are currently preparing for the new Indonesia Super League which kicks off in January and if you find you can take in a home game I urge you to get down to the stadium and enjoy for yourself one of the great Indonesian experiences.

Be warned though. Finding out about games can be difficult if you dont have access to the local media. The best resource is probably the fan club website www.jakmania.org

truest sense.

His untimely departure leaves us bereft but richer for having shared a part of our lives with him.

Paul was an occasional pool player, but best known as an avid Hash House Harrier, rejoicing in the Hash

name of Katoy F**ker.

Paul was a thoughtful and calm character who never got ruffled and possessed a dry sense of humour.

He will be greatly missed. Farewell Paul, enjoy the Hashes in the sky.

With all the attention given to badminton (especially with all the unfortunate negative attention its received worldwide at and after the London games, especially for our beloved Indonesia Raya), let us refresh ourselves with a reminder of Indonesias other national sport:

Kasti!

Kasti, sometimes also known as Gebokan, is a wonderfully relaxed and civilized team game played with a number of bases, a line across one side of an area, a small ball (often a tennis ball) and a bat. It can be played almost anywhere, as long as there is enough room to hit the ball and run the bases. Thus it can be played in a schoolyard, in an empty field or even in the street.

For you expats from England, Ireland, Australia, etc., you might recognize some similarities to a game called Rounders which is itself a first cousin to the ugly American Baseball. The rules and method of play are so similar that there is no question of a common ancestor. We can take comfort in this: there are two things which unite east and west: a ball and a bat.

When exploring the differences between Kasti and these other purebred games, though there are many, there is one which is essential. Kasti is not bound by any notion of hyper-compliance to too many rules. It is flexible. It is like jam karet (rubber time) translated into peraturan karet (rubber rules), or the sports equivalent to santai saja. You can have as many bases as you want. If you have more people, just add more bases. You can have two, three or four. Ive seen some diagrams which allow for as many as six! Use your imagination. To put it positively, Kasti enjoys the freedom, flexibility and versatility other sports lack. In other words, to put it positively also, its perfectly Indonesian.

So I implore you, as a matter of national pride and for your mental well-being, put down your shuttlecock and racquet, grab your tennis ball and bat, throw back a few Bintangs, head out into the street, gather the local neighborhood kids and enjoy a good game of Kasti. It will be a fresh breath to your sporting soul. After all, when playing Kasti, youll always enjoy throwing the ball but youll never be tempted to throw the game.

MIxED MARTIAL ARTS

The UFC is the largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions company in the world, hosting most of the worlds top fighters. MMA is a mix of muay thai (kickboxing originating from Thailand), Brazilian jiu jitsu, karate, Judo, boxing and other martial arts and allows striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground. Fighters from across the globe compete to earn the honour of fighting in the Octagon of this Championship, televised live on Fox Premium Movies universally. Celebrities like Charlize Theron are often in the audience and in UFC Asias debut in Macau, we were graced with the presence of Andy Lau, Hong Kongs acclaimed director, actor, producer and avid UFC supporter.

Held at the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel - a hotel, a casino and a city in its own right - the indoor stadium was packed with 8,500 spectators, each ecstatic to be able to watch some of the worlds best ultimate fighters in Asia. To say that the atmosphere was electric would be an

understatement it was on fire and hurling massive flame balls in the air. Seated only a few rows from the Octagon we could see, and most importantly hear, every punch, kick and fall, and we almost smelt the blood. Out of a total of 10 fights, one was cancelled (Hyun Gyu Lim vs. David Mitchell) as Lim did not make the weigh-in (not acceptable in my opinion).

The night started with the Flyweight division: John Lineker (Brazil) defeated Yasuhiro Urishitani (Japan) via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28). Riki Fukuda (Japan) vs. Tom DeBlass (America) took each other on for a complete three rounds with Fukuda winning by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28). For Bantamweight (135lbs) Alex Caceres (America) defeated Motonobu Tezuka (Japan) via split decision. Takeya Mizugaki (Japan) took on Jeff Houghland (America) and won via unanimous decision followed by Jon Tuck of Guam (who came into the stadium to the Pulp Fiction theme song) fighting Chinas only mainland UFC fighter, Zhang Tiequan, Tuck winning by unanimous decision - quite a let-down to Zhangs many local supporters in the audience. Lightweight fighter, Takanori Gomi (Japan) defeated Mac Danzig (America) via split decision in the competitions sixth fight of the night.

My favourite fight was next with the Welterweight division (170lbs): Koreas Dong Hyun Kim vs. Brazils Paulo Thiago. Kim didnt give Thiago a chance to breathe, and stalked him for the full three rounds, trapping and sitting on top

of Thiago during round three and giving him some extremely powerful double-fist punches to the face. Kim deserved to take this fight without a doubt. The light heavyweight fight brought to the Octagon Brazilian Thiago Silva against Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov, which was the penultimate fight ending in a submission of Nedkov (arm triangle), the only one of the night, at 1.45 minutes of round three.

Up next was the moment Id been waiting for: the Middleweight division fight between American former Middleweight UFC Champion, Rich Franklin and Vietnamese former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, Cung Le. Franklin (entering to AC/DC) holds a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and a Masters Degree in Education and is a former high school teacher who decided to pursue a career in Ultimate Fighting. Cung Le doubles up as an actor in Vietnam and is an older fighter, at 40 years of age. Following extremely strategic plans and fighting in his infamous pink shorts, I would consider Franklin one of my favourite fighters. What followed, for me, was a total anti-climax.

When the fight started, the audience went

absolutely feral as the build up had been so intense. Some shouts from the audience included, Punch him in the face! (this particular audience member may have had one too many beers).

Both men started by playing it a bit safe. Franklin had the speed advantage early on which was not a good sign for Le. Franklin kicked Le and Le tried to counter with a right hand but he came up short. Franklin then threw a leg kick which was countered by a huge right hand punch from Le which brought the fight to an abrupt end: it cracked Franklin on the face and knocked him out cold. The fight was over in two minutes and 17 seconds and was the only KO of the night. Le, overwhelmed with elation, did a double flip in the ring and hugged random officials. The audience was stunned.

Many had not expected Franklin to lose and this fight was absolute proof that in UFC, anything can happen. While many people believe Ultimate Fighting is for brutes, I would say to the contrary. There

is so much respect in this sport, from fighter to fighter and to the audience, which stems from respect taught when practicing martial arts. Most fighters will hug it out after a fight

and the winner often bows down to all four corners of the room to thank the audience for their support. Les victory

Its quite surprising how many people dont know what the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is considering it is the worlds fastest growing sport. A lot of people Ive spoken to have asked if its similar to WWF - Is it pre-planned and acted out? The answer to that question is most definitely, No.

Overcast conditions greeted the combatants at the Graham Yallop Oval in Pancawati, Ciawi on Sunday, October 28th.

The Cricketers Behaving Badly Cricket Club (CBBs) are the most prolific touring cricket team in Asia on their second tour of Java. Saturdays game at Pasir Kalong had been washed out a similar fate was on the cards at Pancawati.

Brian Fleming, CBBs skipper, won the toss deciding to bat on a slightly wet turf track. The Barbarians started well, Pat Savina getting one to cut back from outside off. Sydney-sider, Andrew back in the beer tent early, Mike Maher and Brian then combined to add 40 to the score. Kunal cleaned up Brian (17). John Darling got off the mark with a superb cover drive, but in his next over Kunal claimed him. Tim Gutsell took a fine catch at short cover. Imanuel Baldwin had flown in from Vancouver for the match but didnt stay long at the crease Simon fortunate to get a half tracker passed him into the stumps. David didnt do much better, missing a full toss from Enzo. The CBBs were in trouble at 5 for 50. Cat Maher and Bob (Tiny) Philips then combined to inflate the scorebook.

Cat finally out-caught Simon and bowled Sam for 41. Tiny finishing unbeaten on 18, took the CBB total to 102 off 20.

The rain came, covers out, lunch taken, rain went, covers off, game on. The Barbarian reply started with a stutter, Pat sent packing back to the knoll missing timing a full toss from JD. The Barbarians Captain, Tim Gutsell, and Simon then steadied the home ship, scoring at will and getting the Jakarta

Barbarians over the line in just 11 overs. Tim finished on a fine 68 N.O. and Simon contributed a solid 27 N.O.

Mrs. Nina, Chairwoman of Taman Olahraga Pancawati International (TOPI) said, This is our first game against tourists this year after extensions on the Graham Yallop Oval were completed in September, 2012.

Pat Savina, better known to Jakartas party crowds as the bass player at Bats enthused, This is the only turf wicket in Java and its playing better and better with the passing of time. It definitely provides the bowlers with much more movement than the artificial, batsmen friendly, tracks in Jakarta.

We have more teams from Singapore coming to play in the coming months, Rob Baldwin continued, and of course we have our big legends IV Java tour weekend next March. Guests next year will include: Jeff Thomson, Jeff Dujon, Mark Greatbatch, Adam Hollioake, Carl Hooper and All Black Andy Haden.

Doing Business in Indonesia

by Julia TchezganovaW ith a population of nearly 240 million people, with more than 17,000 islands, and with a significant political and economic place in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is playing an increasingly prominent role in global economy. As a result, not only is Indonesia clearly of interest to foreign investors, but it also sparks excitement in foreigners who wish to come to the archipelagic state in order to enjoy its beauty and culture while setting up their business in a growing market.

It is outside of the scope of this article to cover every aspect of doing business in Indonesia, however, it will serve as a guide in terms of where to look for information and what to look for. In addition, there will be a closer analysis of business structure options available for foreigners in Indonesia.

According to Doing Business 2013: Indonesia, this country is ranked 165th out of 185 economies on the ease of starting a business. As a comparison, China is ranked 151st and Malaysia is 54th.

This means that while the market is a tempting one, it must be very well analyzed and researched by foreigners wishing to do business in Indonesia.

After selecting an appropriate location and market, foreign investors should consider the following issues from a legal perspective: dealing with construction permits, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, and enforcing contracts.

The concerns mentioned above are especially important to consider if there is intent to open a local office. The common structures established by foreigners include a Representative Office, a Regional Representative Office, or a Foreign Joint Venture company.

If a foreigner wishes to sell products or services without the need to be present in Indonesia, the options include appointing an Agent or a Distributor.

A Representative Office (RO) allows legal presence in Indonesia and is cheaper and simpler to establish. However, ROs generally perform promotional activities or gather information, as they are not allowed to perform operational business or trading activities, such as receiving sales payments in Indonesia. ROs are mainly set up for the purpose of marketing, market research, buying or selling agents, monitoring the companys brand, and keeping in close contact with distributors and customers.

Regional Representative Office (RRO) is usually set up by a multinational company in order to manage its operation. It is limited to employing two expatriates who may only coordinate and monitor management activities in the region.

Foreign Joint Venture companies (PMA) must always take the form of a limited liability establishment (PT) and can involve legal entities (corporations) or individuals. Any company owning any percentage of foreign shareholding is a PMA company. A joint venture company can be established with a 100% foreign ownership; however, within 15 years the company must sell (some) shares to Indonesian investors through direct placement or indirectly through the domestic stock exchange.

Most investment projects have to be approved by the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and business licenses that are formally granted for 30 years now remain valid for as long as the operations proceed.

The amount of capital to be invested in a foreign-owned company is decided by parties themselves, and BKPM approval is based on the scale and economics of the project.

Things that are sensible to consider for foreign investors include: finding a good lawyer, understanding business visa travel, ensuring that intellectual property rights are protected, understanding taxation and tax incentives, ensuring that the business follows through with the accounting and auditing requirements, proper employment of both expatriates and local employees, repatriating the profits, and fulfilling the obligations of corporate social responsibility, among other things.

It is recommended that anyone with an interest of doing business in Indonesia downloads an Economic Profile provided by The World Bank. It includes detailed information on starting a business in Indonesia, the countrys economic environment, details on laws and regulations that apply to foreign businesses, procedures for set up and development, and how to deal with arising concerns.

MEET THE ExPAT

So Ken, where do you come from, what was life like growing up?My family, while not exactly dirt poor, was definitely working class. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and we lived across the street from the Los Angeles International Airport. My Dad was an airline mechanic for United Airlines and my Mom was a bank teller for Crocker Bank; not exactly the pedigree one thinks of in golfing circles. For me growing up, it was DC 10s, taking off and landing from across the street, public schools, public golf links and caddying on weekends so I could play the better private golf courses in Los Angeles.

How did you end up in Jakarta, what brought you here?Ive been hooked on Indonesia since 1999. I started in Bali on a surfing vacation. From Bali to Lombok to Sumbawa to Sumatra, I finally came through Jakarta in 2006. I met so many wonderful people living here in Jakarta on that trip, expat and local alike. I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm, especially with the expat community here. I was living in San Francisco at that time, involved in several businesses and doing well, so I thought. Sure I had lots of stuff but I quickly learned that people in Jakarta really live. There isnt a day that goes by in Jakarta, that I dont see or experience something interesting, wild or crazy. That sort of daily life experience simply wasnt happening for me any longer back in California and is ultimately what brought me to Jakarta.

you started out as a caddy and now teach at Accel Junior Golf Academy here in Jakarta. How did you make the move from caddy to golf academy?I would say humble beginnings, which I believe has shaped my life in very positive ways. I have worked as a dishwasher, waiter, on a Christmas tree farm, insurance salesman, business owner and many other jobs. Looking back however, it was my experience as a caddy and in golf generally, that I cherish most. I was able to work at Bel Air Country Club under Head Pro Eddie Merrins, The Little Pro. Merrins took the UCLA golf team (with Cory Pavin, Tom Pernise and Duffy Waldorf) to the PAC 10 championship. He is my coach, mentor and dear friend. He gave me the opportunity to caddy for Jack Nicklaus and I met a 14 year old kid named Tiger Woods through my association with Merrins and the Bel Air

Country Club. Bel Air and Eddie Merrins are the foundation of my golf experience and the source of my motivation to bring golf to the youth of Jakarta. I was a pretty good caddy back in the day but over the years, I have developed a unique talent in working with kids and making the complex simple to understand.

Is there any particular reason you chose to focus on teaching golf to children?Our academy doesnt exclude adults. We have many adult students; many are the parents of our juniors. Here is the main issue however; golf is not a natural athletic activity. Every natural instinct one has while addressing a golf ball is WRONG. There are no born golfers and literally every touring professional you see on TV was either taught by a teaching professional from an early age or self-taught through many years of hard work, toil and study. I simply find it easier to work with a blank slate as opposed to someone who has developed numerous bad habits over time. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy working with anyone with a genuine interest in improving their golf swing and golf game. Bad habits can be overcome and anyone, with average athletic ability, can become a competent golfer.

What, if any, are some of the challenges of teaching golf to children?For me, trying to teach children to play golf is like a fish trying to learn to swim. I guess Im just a big kid at heart and it comes naturally working with kids. We focus on both fun and fundamentals. We are also very keen on rules, etiquette and golf values. The challenge is to create better golfers and better people alike.

Whats your favourite golf course here in Indonesia?Thats easy, Cilandak Golf Course, a.k.a. Fatmawati. Its a nine hole institution in Jakarta and a great place to learn for children and adults alike. Sure, the Asian Tour will probably not hold an event at Fatmawati any time soon, but its a great place to start for anyone new to the game. Of course Jakarta is blessed with so many world class courses.

Are you a self-taught golfer, or did you take lessons?I was lucky to take lessons early on. I couldnt afford lessons from the likes of

Eddie Merrins but because I caddied and worked at Bel Air Country Club, Merrins would give me free lessons in his spare time. Merrins revolutionary book, Swing the Handle is close at hand as I continue to be influenced by his teaching. Im also a Ben Hogan fanatic and keep both Hogan books, Power Golf and Five Lessons under my pillow. I have also worked closely with Tom Bertrand, writer of The Secret of Hogans Swing. Tom had direct access to Hogan secrets via his affiliation with touring professional John Schlee, one of the very few who took private lessons from Hogan. I recommend all three books to any student of the game. I continue to take lessons to this day. Sometimes the best lessons are the ones I learn from our students.

Golf fashion is quite distinct, with lots of bright colours, pastels and plaid. Is there a reason behind the loud outfits?Thats a good question. I guess it all started with Doug Sanders, back in the 60s and 70s, and now a tradition carried on today by so many touring professionals. I too, occasionally get loud with hot pink and plaid combinations. There is no accounting for good taste. Besides, whats so wrong with a coordinated ensemble of golf slacks pressed, matching belt, shined shoes, and ironed collar shirt that is tucked in? I am all for golf fashion. Loud perhaps, but also very tidy.

So apart from golf, are there any other sports you enjoy?As I mentioned earlier, I originally came to Indonesia to surf. Im not very good but I love it. I enjoy dirt bikes and have raced enduro class in the Mojave Desert ala Steve McQueen. Sailing is another passion I left in San Francisco along with my Yamaha dirt bike. My heart, however, is here in Jakarta.

What do you enjoy most about living in Indonesia?Easy! All the smiling faces!! Like I said, people really live here. There is always something going on. And for those who complain about the traffic, its really not that bad here. Try the 405 freeway in Los Angeles!

I came across Deskom and his best mate, Aris one hot morning on Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta, as they were wandering amongst the traffic in search of a few Rupiah. Deskom was strumming on his miniature guitar and Aris was singing away to try and catch the motorists attention.

Their story is one of sadness and hope.

Deskom (15 years old) struck me as a lovely boy with a quiet nature and a strong determination. He is very loyal to his friends and family. He comes from a family of five - two brothers and two sisters, aged between three and 14 years. His mother does not earn much money as a maid for a local Javanese family and his father sells petrol to motorcyclists in front of his home, so that he can look after the three year old.

Deskom is determined to go to school, so every morning between 7 and 11 am he plays guitar to passing motorists. His goal is to earn Rp.40,000 50,000 which pays for school books and clothes and anything left over goes to support his parents. He goes to school at 11am and finishes at 6pm, at which point he meets up with Aris and they spend a couple more hours hoping to drum up a few more Rupiah from the commuters as they make their way home in the heavy traffic.

Aris, who is two years younger than his faithful friend, is a very shy boy, lacking in confidence and very much lives in the shadow of Deskom. His mother passed away from bronchitis when he was four years old and he now lives with his father and stepmother. He cannot go to school as he cannot afford the uniforms and books and must stay at home to look after his twin sister and two brothers.

The two boys both share the same dream - to play football like David Beckham one day. So, if you happen to be driving down Mampang and see these two teenage boys at the lights, one with a guitar and one singing, put a few Rupiah their way, it will go to a good cause.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

T here are two kinds of men in the world: those who can pull off a moustache and those who can't. Movember, a month-long campaign to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer around the world, is a great way to let those men who are clearly nowhere near Burt Reynolds or Tom Selleck, dabble for a good cause.

But more importantly, no guy really likes to talk about prostate cancer. The subject is never really broached. But the power of Movember is that an atrocity on your upper lip seems to overshadow the furrowed brow that often comes with the idea of having another man's finger in your ass. Movember is more popular than you thinkand it's catching on in Jakarta. The beauty of the charity, which was born in 2003, raising $126 million for prostate cancer research last year, is in the hook. The moustache is a precarious thing. Either you can pull it off or you can't. And every year, men around the world are willingly putting their upper lip to the test.

Like most great ideas, Movember was born in a bar. Adam Garone, a native Australian, was having a pint with his brother and three other mates on a Sunday afternoon when the conversation turned to 70s fashion and why the moustache had peaked, but never reemerged bigger and better than ever in the 21st century.

The day at the bar ended in a bet. The bet turned into a journey to fuel passion and create change in the world. The rules are simple. Participants start the month clean-shaven and spend the 30 days of November sporting a tache. They then come together on December 1st for a moustache-themed party raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer research. Guys involved are essentially moustache farmers whose only season is Novemberfarmers who are redefining charity.

Movember is about looking foolish for something that is very serious," said Scott Hanna, Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce's Young Professionals Committee. "What better way to keep why you are participating in Movember in the front of your mind than wearing the cause on the front of your face? I think nearly everyone has lost an important man in their life to cancer, and this campaign raises both awareness and resources to combat the awful disease."

Ironically, Movember, founded in Australia, was the number one national fundraiser in Canada last year. But it's a global movement, and you can't have impact and change without the ladies of the world getting behind the cause. Mo Sistas, they are referred to, is a way for women to get involved. Mo Sistas do everything from raise cash and awareness to simply uploading an avatar on their Twitter feed of them with a finger where their moustache would be.

photo to my Twitter account of me wearing a moustache. It is really interesting since here in Indonesia, were not really aware about these forms of cancer. I thought the more

people got involved, the more awareness we could raise!

While plenty of Movember events are happening at the end of the month, Sammy Bramantyo, one of the owners of Lawless Jakarta, which sells music merchandise, motorcycle customization and owns a tattoo studio, and a few friends have organized a Movember event at Eastern Promise in Kemang, on Sunday, November 18, with all the money from ticket sales and the charity auction going to Yayasan Kanker Indonesia.

It's quite simple, really. Lawless is a shop with probably 95 percent of its products for men. Prostate cancer is a man-related issue, said Sammy, who decided to organize the event following the success of "High Octane Moustache" in 2011.

Lawless Jakarta is expecting upwards of 400 people coming out to enjoy six Indie bands. "I, myself happen to have a late relative who didn't realize that he has prostate cancer until it got really bad. It just seems really logical if we do something for men's greater good."

What I like about Movember is its unique way of doing the campaign, continued Sammy. The moustache growing, women sporting fake moustaches; the image really fits the purpose. And of course the get-together, celebrating life and doing good for others at the same time.

Meanwhile, Hanna and a few other Mo Bros are itching for a big party come December 1st, when it is time to shave the moustaches clean.

At the end of the month, we're all going to get together to enjoy one last foamy beer moustache face before we denude our upper lips, collect our donations, and swap stories about adventures in bad tachery, Hanna said. We'll split the funds down the middle, keeping half of the funds local to help cancer charities and sending the other half to the US to support cutting-edge research.

Irish Pubs can be found in all corners of the world and there is a reason behind this. Stereotypes aside, the Irish do enjoy their social drink and want to do so in a home away from home setting. There is a lot more to an Irish pub than just drink and traditional food. Irish pubs are welcoming to strangers and embody the love-thy-neighbour nature that the Irish are famous for. It takes more than serving pints of Guinness and some shamrock ornaments to be a proper Irish pub and luckily we need not take more than a drive down to Senayan to get some Irish hospitality at a good old authentic Irish pub.

Molly Malones is a traditional Irish pub that has recently opened in Senayan Arcadia. It is split into two different areas; one side holds the traditional Irish pub whilst the other is the live music venue with Indonesian band Catfunk on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Amber light gives this cosy watering hole a rustic feel. The trinkets that Trevor Hough, Manager, affectionately calls the bric-a-brac are all from Ireland. The antique phone, clock and vintage tin signs are a few of the weird and wonderful decorative items that give Molly Malones its quirk and character. It is furnished with dark wooden table sets and has the only world class pool table in Senayan. They have two televisions that play all major sports events should you want to scream at the television in public when the ref has not taken your obviously sound advice on calling the yellow card.

The food menu is simple and offers pub favourites whilst the drinks menu lists a variety of cleverly named cocktails kept in theme amongst other vices. We opted for two of the signature dishes, Beef Guinness Pie and Fish and Chips. The fish was battered and had the signature crunch and flake of good Fish and Chips; accompanied by none other than Heinz ketchup, mild mustard mayo and a tangy tartar sauce. The homemade chips were fat and golden ready to be dipped in some ketchup. The Beef Guinness Pie came with fat chips as well. The beef was meltingly soft from the malty Guinness and swam in flavourful gravy with potatoes and carrots underneath a buttery flaky pastry hat. I had my eye on the Irish Stew and Heavenly Chocolate Brownie, but that is to be saved for my next visit as portions are rather generous. The Angry Irishman (Whiskey and Baileys), Kilkenny - Irish ale, Margarita, Martini and Mojito are recommended to wash down the hearty meals at Molly Malones.

What makes Molly Malones special is the genuinely friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere, which makes this a perfect place to unwind after a hard day at the office. Whilst sitting on my table I had watched a tourist make friends with the barkeep and a suited man lunching alone enjoying the banter of his server. Margerita, our lovely server, explained these relationships by just doing her job and treating us with fun conversation and good service. Although pubs are usually perceived as a man cave, the ladies are not forgotten in Molly Malones. Ladies are invited for a free Cosmopolitan or Frozen Margarita on Thursday nights. Happy hour runs daily from 10am-8pm with Fridays offering one for one. Although it is best to come in to Molly Malones and soak up the atmosphere and hospitality over a cold one, they do provide catering services customised to your occasion.

Festival in August 1948. He wrote Round the fringe of the official festival drama there seems to be more private enterprise than before... Im afraid some of us are not going to be often at home during the evenings. He was describing the independent theatre groups that had arrived uninvited at the Edinburgh International Festival for the second year running to perform in venues outside or round the fringe of the city of Edinburgh and not under the auspices of the official festival. They were a sort of band of renegade performers thumbing their noses at the establishment. Over the years the Edinburgh Festival Fringe became as popular as the official Edinburgh International Festival and today it is one of 12 official festivals that take place simultaneously in the city of Edinburgh every year for three weeks during the month of August. You could say the Edinburgh International Festival has become a festival of festivals and in fact the official title of the organisation behind the event has recently been changed to the plural - The Edinburgh Festivals - to reflect that.

As the decades went by the technically correct but grammatically awkward title The Edinburgh Festival Fringe got

simplified in use by the masses to the easier and seemingly more logical The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and as a result Fringe became accepted as a type of festival in its own right rather than a part of another festival. The term Fringe has since been adopted and adapted by festival organisers around the world until today it is used to describe almost any festival that incorporates multiple art forms, usually with an accent on comedy. The Jakarta International Fringe Festival, or JakFringe, follows this trend and in November every year from now on we will present a wide range of local and international performances and exhibitions covering everything from comedy through to fine art, poetry and photography.

Fringe festivals usually include a large comedy component and JakFringe is no exception. The enormous rise in the popularity of stand up comedy in Indonesia over the last two years has made it much easier than it would previously have been to fill our stages with extraordinarily talented local comedians, and for the first time in Indonesian history we flew in some of the worlds leading international comedy stars to perform alongside them. The first Jakarta International Fringe Festival is over and what a week it was! Bill Bailey was in town with 15 other top international comedians from all over the world and I dont think I have ever laughed so much. As you can probably imagine, drinking beer with 16 of the funniest people in the world is almost impossible there is either no time to drink because you are laughing too much, or they hit you with a joke in mid gulp and cause beer to come out of your nose. Thanks to Jakarta Expat and to everyone who supported the Fringe and attended the shows. We couldnt have done it without you!

What is a Fringe Festival? The answer to that question varies depending on who you ask and a hairdresser will definitely have a very different opinion to a comedian. The term Fringe was first used by playwright Robert Kemp in his article for the Edinburgh Evening News published during the second Edinburgh International

If you have not noticed we have six weeks to NyE so put down the cupcake and pick up the training gear; its time to bring in the New year looking super-fit. oddly enough there are quite a few parallels between getting fit and getting fat, and much like getting fat, getting fit starts with the mind-set so, let me expand (no pun intended).

motIvAtIon:

Normally, you think about eating a chocolate bar before you reach for it. Even if its only for a split second, you picture yourself biting into the bar, you imagine the soft velvety feel of chocolate melting on your tongue and you taste the creamy bitter sweet chocolate flavour. This vivid thought or visualization motivates you to act/eat chocolate, so why not use visualization to get fit instead?

How? Firstly, ask yourself what does getting fit mean to you? Does it mean losing 10 pounds, or fitting into a size 10 dress, does it mean running a marathon or simply tripping all over the endorphins with well-defined cheek bones and a grin? Write down what getting fit means to you in detail; get a clear idea of what you would look and feel like when you get to your desired fitness levels keep it realistic.

Then ask yourself, why is getting fit so important? We only remain motivated to activities which relate to our personal values, not the values of friends, families or spouses. Discover your values. Finally, spend a few minutes daily focusing on your idea of fitness, call it to mind making it as clear and compelling as possible; this visualization reprograms the mind.

But before getting excited about getting fit whilst perched on your sofa visualizing; stop just like getting fat, getting fit requires action.

orGAnIze tIme:Schedule your fitness routine into your day; I find the Life-Act Model works fabulously at making space in a busy schedule:

L: List in detail all your daily commitments. Include fitness even if it hasnt been a commitment till date.

I: Identify priorities.F: Focus; only prioritize commitments you

and people important to you benefit from. E: Evaluate the possibilities for changes.

Act: Make the changes you identified above.

Avoid commitments that are not priorities. Adjust schedules to support fitness. Place exercise first thing in the morning; this is the most predictable/manageable part of a day.

And Accept some commitments may not be pleasurable but must be completed.

Great, now that you have fitness scheduled - working on it means regulating calorie intake and burning excess fat.

eAt: Like getting fat, getting fit involves eating.the right things. Becoming The Lean, Green, Veggie-Eating Machine isnt top priority for most people, yet eating more veggies means you eat less carbs, working wonders for the waistline:

Choose food wisely, the closer food is to its natural form the better. Foods from cartons, tins, bottles or packages are processed.

Serve yourself deliberately, pile high on the greens and light on the whites (pastas, rice, potatoes - carbs).

Eat intentionally, start with the greens, move to the proteins then work on the carbs; fill up with the good stuff first.

Use www.myfitnesspal.com, this free site is a food journal that helps you track food intake against weight goals.

Sleep; your body needs to rest to metabolize what you eat.

exercISe:Getting fit means moving. Though traffic jams in Jakarta encourage a sedentary lifestyle I say where there is will, there is way. The most obvious exercise option is the gym (preferably with a trainer), yet there are other ways of keeping it moving:
