From the President’s Desk

We have had a very busy 3rd Quarter with the annual STRAP and Operating Plan (AOP) exercise as well as a number of customer contact events including a very successful OpsManage in Abu Dhabi. We have also had the pleasure of our CEO, Wayne Edmunds, visiting the region and interacting with many of our colleagues in Dubai. Harald Konermann and Dr. Mohamed Farouk had also visited the Dubai office in November as part of the Delivery leadership transition and addressed a townhall meeting.

During the past few months, I have been meeting many employees, in groups over a meal, as part of my employee engagement drive and my leadership team has been replicating the same around the region. I believe that this is a very effective medium for knowledge and experience sharing as well as getting some valuable feedback from all our colleagues.

We continue to achieve many milestones in our existing projects while winning a number of new ones. All credit goes to the teams involved. Many of these have been highlighted in this newsletter. I urge each of you to ensure that all your good work is being shared through newsletters and success stories. These are very valuable tools for us in future customer interactions in addition to being a medium to share best practices.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Franco M. Restelli

FBM Upgrade Works in RRD, Takreer

This project involves the upgrade of 100 series FBM’S to 200 series FBM’S. This fast-track project including engineering, procurement and delivery is scheduled to be completed in 12 weeks.

This upgrade project covers the areas of Hydro skimmer and Hydro cracker units of the refinery. Invensys successfully commissioned a similar upgrade works in RRD, Ruwais for another area of the plant known as Condensate units. The timely execution and fault less performance of the works last year resulted in a bigger repeat order of higher magnitude. During the refinery turn around schedule of Feb to April 2012, the new FBM 200 series system cabinets will be installed and commissioned.

Delivery Update

Invensys Infusion SCADA and Foxboro RTUs in Saudi Aramco Restricted Vendors List

Invensys Infusion SCADA and new Foxboro RTUs (Remote Terminal Unit) were successfully tested by the Saudi Aramco team in Dubai last month. This has resulted in acceptance of these 2 products into the Restricted Vendors List (RVL).

Before the recently conducted test, Foxboro legacy Unix SCADA and Foxboro SCD 5200 have been in the Saudi Aramco RVL, however due to evolving market needs, these products have either become obsolete or lack certain features. The successful testing means that Invensys can participate in future Saudi Aramco projects in addition to getting extra evaluation credit points from other strategic end users like Saudi Electricity Company, Ministry of Water, Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC).

All credit for this success goes to the technical core team for swiftly implementing required software patches and fixing bugs, management team for their leadership, delivery organization and the supply chain team for their support in the testing process. Hearty congratulations to Fadi Suliman, Ayed Salem, Chris Smith, Patrizia Fiorentini, Hatem Maarouf, Massimo Salusti and Nahidh Elshaer.

RasGas Workstation Demo Successfully Completed

The Invensys team has successfully completed demo testing for RasGas Workstation Upgrade project. This demo was an initiative to support our commitment on support of legacy stations, elimination of multicast on the Nodebus and compatibility amongst our latest hardware and software.

The demo testing faced a very challenging timeline – it had to be setup 2 weeks prior to customer arrival in addition to a very challenging scope – support of legacy I/A solutions on I/A V.8.6. The testing went off very well and we received very positive comments from the customer and the fact that we have been invited for an immediate site study is testimony to this.

All credit goes to the team comprising of Irma Aguilar, Waleed Wadi, Glen Bounds, Jay Abdallah, Mohsen Sorour, Fadi Sulaiman, Mike Cepalo, Yusuf Kapadia, Deepak Shanbhag, Srinivas Gatram and Ravikant Chaudhari.

INVENSYSInvensys calls this an ‘immersive virtual reality training system’, which

works by linking up control room operators to fi eld operators and mainte-nance operators with a high-fi delity process simulation and virtual walk-

through plant environment.Development on the project started in 2009, and the fi nished product pro-

vides complete plant crew training to improve skills that are safety-critical, by enabling operators to perform tasks in a simulated environment, allow-ing them to react quickly and correctly, facilitating reactions in high stress conditions, and instilling standards for team training and communications.

“You can really interact with the plant, and train people in the fi eld for startups, shutdowns, safety, security, malfunctions and maintenance,” says Maurizio Rovaglio, Vice President and Business Head for Advanced Appli-cations & Software, and the software’s inventor.

“The key idea was to link this kind of 3D and virtual reality to the simula-tion, so becoming a virtual plant. If you open a valve, for example, or do any type of activity or interaction, you can see the reaction of the system, and the control room and operator are on exactly the same page.”

“We are at the moment the only one on the market doing this solution. It’s the link of the regular simulation environment with virtual reality – that’s really what we believe is unique.”

This was perhaps some of the biggest headline news in the power generation industry in the last 12 months – a Siemens SGT5-8000H turbine achieved a world-record level of effi ciency of more than 60

per cent during a test phase, with an output of more than 578 megawatts. The new turbine is designed for 400 megawatts in simple cycle duty and

600 megawatts in combined cycle, and in testing proved that more than 500 megawatts could be put online in 30 minutes, enabling stable load gradients of 35 megawatts per minute to be run.

“Our trail-blazing power plant with this gas turbine in the highest effi -ciency class shows that climate protection and low-cost power generation using fossil fuels can go hand in hand,” says Michael Suess, CEO of Siemens Energy Sector. “The new generation of our combined cycle power plants, for example, consumes one-third less natural gas per kilowatt-hour generated than the average for the combined cycle plants currently installed world-wide. At the same time, CO2 emissions also drop by a third.”

More than 750 Siemens employees, including 250 engineers were involved in the development of the new gas turbine and combined cycle plant, and the fi rm invested more than EUR500 million in turbine develop-ment and in the construction and operation of a prototype plant in Irsching, Bavaria. The turbine was tested for a year and a half at the plant, and in mid-2009 was extended to form a combined-cycle facility by adding a bottoming steam cycle, with a Siemens heat recovery steam generator and a Siemens high-temperature steam turbine operating at 600 degrees Celsius in order to create the most effi cient combined cycle plant in the world.

Technological advances are enticing plant owners to outsource their mission-critical maintenance activities

Running downstream facilities pro tably and at high operating rates requires ongoing and continuous monitoring and

maintenance, as downtime means interruption of the whole production chain, which ultimately affects end users.

Checking plants regularly is key to avoiding production outages. “Three elements must harmoniously work together to enable safe and pro table production at

any downstream plant: well-maintained equipment, properly con gured and managed automation and information systems, and competent, alert, and motivated operators,” says Eddie Habibi, founder and chief executive of cer, PAS.

Ongoing monitoring of the health of plant equipment in real-time is essential to achieving operational excellence. Many top-tier hydrocarbon processing companies recognise this fact and have put in place

QUICK FIXES rigorous asset management programmes to ensure the health of their processing equipment. “Maintenance is a combination of all technical and administrative actions, including supervisory actions, intended to retain an item in, or restore it to, a state in which it can perform the stated function,” says Johan Brenner, chief operating of cer at Borouge. “The goal of maintenance strategy is to achieve optimum equipment reliability and availability,” he adds.
