Fighting Leukemia

On 10 May, countless volunteers and members of the community came together in the Ningxi Cultural Square to raise money and awareness for a young woman. Nineteen year-old student Lin Qing Yun has been suffering from leukemia and it is for this cause that the Charity Dance Event took place. The campaign was launched by the Xiangzhou Government volunteers. In total, more than 20 local schools and businesses participated in the event. In addition, the effort was aided by the Zhongshan Work Union, the Blue Angel Love Society, and the China Education Alliance.

The large stage in the square provided a platform for entertainers to draw attention to their cause. Dancers doing belly-dance as well as traditional Chinese dance were joined by singers and musicians. Many stands sold goods such as water, food, and clothing, with all the profit going toward the charity. All of them volunteered their time, energy, and money to make it a successful day. In total, 43,118元 and HKD5,040 was raised.

Emergency fund established

The US appoints new ambassador to China

China to Open SE To Foreign CompaniesThe Asian Development Bank’s annual meeting concluded

that Asian governments must spend more to develop social safety nets and reduce reliance on export-driven economic growth, as a lack of western demand for products has put many Asian economies into free fall.

13 nations including China. Japan, South Korea and the ASEAN states are to set up an emergency fund amounting to $120bn, a scheme dubbed the Chiang Mai Initiative. The smaller Asian states will be able to borrow larger amounts in proportion to their investments than those more-developed.

China and Japan will contribute the lions share, in equal parts totaling $76.8bn. South Korea will also contribute a substantial amount.

The ADB warned that 61 million people would remain in extreme poverty this year because of the economic situation, and warned this number could increase to 160 million if slow growth continues next year.

President Barack Obama backed up his push for bipartisanism in the shadow of the worldwide recession by appointing one of the Republican Party’s rising stars as the new ambassador to China.

Jon Huntsman, Republican senator for Utah, has extensive experience in Asia, having worked as a mormon missionary in Taiwan, during which period he attained fluency in Mandarin, and having served briefly as the US’s ambassador

to Singapore. One of his seven children was adopted from China. Viewed as a progressive and forward-thinking member of the Republican Party, his stances on issues such as same-sex marriages, reforming the health care system and the environment display a willingness to move beyond stereotypical ideologies.

Obama said at the appointment, “Given the breadth of issues at stake in our relationship with China, this ambassadorship is as important as any in the world, because the US will be best able to deal effectively with global challenges in the 21st century by working in concert with China.”

The Chinese Government concluded an agreement with Britain that will eventually allow foreign companies to list on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, in an effort to improve China’s stock market and the accessibility of the local business environment.

The talks, held at the start of May, were led by UK Chancellor Darling and China’s VP Wang Qishan. A spokesperson said, “China agrees to allow qualified foreign companies to list on its stock exchange through issuing shares in accordance with relevant prudential regulations,” though a time frame for the new regulations has not yet been established.

The busy Zhuhai-Macau border has become synonymous with long lines and endless shops. Facing away from the famous red-topped border, there is a new view on the Gongbei skyline: the Zhuhai Charming Holiday Hotel. This brand new resort hotel is just a few minutes walking distance from the Gongbei underground; in fact it’s the closest 5-star hotel to the border. Rising high into the sky, Charming’s glossy gold exterior immediately draws the eye. Also bringing attention to the hotel is a huge screen that faces

Macau from the fifth floor. The hotel’s alluring entrance suggests all the luxury it has to offer its prized guests.

A brand new facility that opened just two months ago, the hotel surrounds its guests in comfort, service, and an attention to detail. Walking into the lobby, one will immediately notice the chic art deco decor that leads to the intricate chandeliers in the downstairs cafe. This is the perfect place to stop for a cocktail or a macaron-- the colorful French cookie sandwich that are impossible to find anywhere else in Zhuhai. Head upstairs to the second floor at lunch or dinner hours and you’ll be sure to find other savvy patrons ready for Charming’s feast of a buffet. The spread includes a sushi chef, B.B.Q., and other delicacies, all inclusive at a very reasonable price.

A few stories up, on the fifth floor is where the huge screen facing Macau is located. Behind the screen is another stunning view, a clear, blue outdoor pool. This central pool area is classically tiled and furnished with wooden deck chairs that reference the Mediterranean. The fifth floor also

offers guests a fitness training centre that overlooks the pool. Tucked into the corner is a tea room with high-quality teas with fully-equipped tea tables; it’s an ideal place to relax. To the right of the pool is the Grand Palace Ballroom, an exquisitely decorated room that is perfect for corporate events. The fifth floor of the Charming Holiday Hotel is truly a special place, and that’s not even counting the view.

Keep moving skyward and there are countless rooms tailored for the romantic couple on holiday (notice the large massage tubs) or the working businessman. But the view is what Charming is all about, so keep going up and up the top: the 23rd floor. Way up there is the Executive Lounge, a charming place to relax with drinks and friends. The Executive

Lounge recently played host to the first-ever Charming Hotel Cocktail Hour, in which some of Zhuhai’s finest came out to appreciate the view. The guests were rewarded too, when the Charming Hotel raffled off not one, but two Executive Suites valued in at 5,000 RMB to two lucky winners. Look for more social and networking events in the future at the Charming Holiday Hotel.

Once up at the top, there’s no way to go but down. That’s O.K. because the hotel’s elevators are connected to the Gongbei underground. You could make it to the border without ever having to cross the street! Other services in the hotel include a women’s spa, shopping, a Cantonese Restaurant, and Mah Jong Rooms.

A group of runners pose for picture in the lobby of the Holiday

Inn a day before Zhuhai’s first ever half-marathon. Competitors came from many different countries: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, England, Australia. Italy, USA, and Germany, just to name a few.

On the street, runners take last minute pictures before the race

begins. Some runners came individually and some came as teams of up to four. Either way, they all had a long way ahead of them that morning. The marathon route was closed to the public during the hours of the race. Cars, bikes, taxis, and buses were blocked from the roads to ensure the runners’ safety.

A Singaporean runner (left) and friend (right) pose for a picture

before their run begins. They participated in the 10k Fun Run, which

was mostly along Lover’s Road. Many took the ‘fun’ in Fun Run to heart and dressed up in colourful costumes, much to delight of onlookers.

More ‘fun’ runners pose for pre-race pictures. Some of them got

quite creative with their costumes. If anything, their headgear kept them dry from the light drizzle of rain that graced the early morning before the marathon. It was probably also quite a challenge to make it to the end of the 10k with their costumes still intact.

The competitors amass at the starting line. Nearly 2,000

participants came from around the globe to take part in Zhuhai’s Half Marathon. Onlookers and the press, such as Zhuhai T.V., were there to help kick off the groundbreaking event.

Darren Benson of Australia (left) and Stefano Passarello of Italy

(right) were the two top runners of the half-marathon. Early on, they came out strong to set a clear pace for the rest of the pack to follow. Passarello is a regular runner in the Hong Kong circuit and was labeled as the man to beat, both overall and in his category.

Stefano Passarello, the man marked to win from the

beginning, crosses the finish line first to the champion of Zhuhai’s First Half-Marathon. His time was an impressive 1:11:32, despite Achilles heel problems and a humid morning that slowed many of the runners down.

More runners start to cross the finish line. The man above shows

off his exuberance upon the completion of the half-marathon. The 21K distance is a serious accomplishment as is participating in the first Zhuhai Half Marathon.

The fastest female on the course - Yang Liwen (杨丽文) - and she is a

local girl from Zhuhai! She crossed the finish line with a time of 1:23:58 and made history as the fastest woman in Zhuhai. Hopefully, she’ll be back next year to defend her title.

Post-race cool off. The runners had to battle humidity, although

the course is a relatively level one. This runner makes sure that he doesn’t overheat after a long run.

All runners who completed the race got a medal to show

recognition for their commitment and achievement. The race brought in runners from all over the world and put a spotlight on the beautiful seaside city of Zhuhai as an increasingly desirable to live, work, and play.

Organiser Robert Kirby from Kirby Leadership was extremely pleased with how the day went and vowed to return to Zhuhai to oversee the next run in the near future. Find out when at www.zhuhai-marathon.com

Delta Bridges to Ye Li Island

Ye Li Dao Island in Xiangzhou opened to public last year following huge investment by local authorities. Since then, it’s been an ideal place for a quiet walk or bike ride. But, on May 30th the quiet island was taken over by loud, rockin’ music. The first-ever Delta Bridges Charity Music Festival took place as hundreds of live music fans descended upon Zhuhai. The day-long festival was a joint venture between Delta Bridges, Zhuhai Charity Federation, Ryan’s Bar, Double Star Cafe and Restaurant, the Zhuhai Tourism Bureau, Zhuhai Lijing Tent Co. Ltd, Chidao Co. Ltd, Global IELTS School and 604 Productions.

The huge event showcased international musical acts from around the Pearl River Delta. The line-up of performers was headed by the three-piece Celtic band, Bahouki, who have travelled from Hong Kong to Zhuhai for the past two years for Ryan’s Bar’s infamous St. Patrick’s Day celebration. They came over from Hong Kong once again, and this time they brought friends. Some local jazz bands also took to the stage. Other performers for the day of island music included The Buhao Boys, Ron ‘Chopper’ Keelan, Alex’s Bar Band ‘Legacy’, local band ‘The Watcher’, DJ Sam and DJ Sean amongst others - all making up over 10 hours of live music.Tickets were 100-150元 for entry with part of the proceeds going to local charities including the Zhuhai Charity Federation. Local restaurants Double Star Cafe and Pecatti di Gola catered the

event, as well as Michael’s BBQ and Chris’s famous sausages! Live Bar were also on hand to sell soft drinks, and snacks and the largest tent went to the top priority (after the music of course!) - BEER! Ryan and his team had any kind of drink you could imagine and kept them coming throughout the day with the help of Marian Lenehan - an Irish expat about to start her third year here In Zhuhai. All in all it was a great day, with everybody having fun and enjoying something new for Zhuhai!

Opera Dinner at Holiday Inn

On 22 and 23 May, Zhuhai enjoyed two beautiful voices filling the night air. The Opera Dinner was hosted by the Holiday Inn, and paired classic European opera with a stunning three-course meal and wine tasting. John Drummond of New Zealand and Marianne Koestler-Medek of Austria

entertained diners with traditional opera as well as some more modern classics.

Drummond previously lived in Shanghai where he works as closely with the New Shanghai Orchestra. He has sung for her Majesty the Queen of England and Princess Margaret. Drummond has also been a soloist and principal singer in over 25 productions during his career. He is now bringing his voice home to Zhuhai as he takes the position of headmaster at the Zhuhai International School on Qi’Ao Island.

Koestler-Medek has made the move to East Asia and works in both South Korea and Shanghai. She recently released a cd entitled Lieder. Both singers will be accompanied on piano by Hong Kong-born Generose Yau. Mark Clulow, a young British expat living in Zhuhai hosted the evening, introducing each of the songs in turn.

The three-course meal was crafted by the Holiday Inn’s own, chef Michel Seyve. The meal was accompanied with a wine pairing for each course. Guests from across the Delta commented that the 350元ticket fee for dinner and the entertainment was no match for the “wonderfully special” evening they enjoyed.

The dynamic ART instructor’s team is made up of Philippe Descombes and Rodolfo Avila. The pair have enough experience and expertise between them to teach their students both skill and safety. Descombes has a long background of formula racing in Europe and Asia, from Formula Renault to Formula 3. He was the Formula Asia Champion and won his category twice in the Macau Grand Prix. Descombes has trained several of ART’s most recent talents such as Franky Cheng, Keisuke Konimoto, Jazeman Jaafar, and Ross Jaminson. The other side of the duo is Avila, a Macanese driver, he is the 2003 Asian Formula Renault Champion and 2008 Asian Supercar Champion. The ART of DrivingNew Classes at Zhuhai International Circuit

Many people know how to drive, or at least many people are allowed on the road. However, for some it’s not only a way to get to and from work: it is work. Professional drivers take part in one of the most exciting and technical sports around. Racing requires skill, stamina, and most definitely, knowledge. It’s no wonder that many spectators have a passion for motorsports such as Formula One. The Zhuhai International Circuit is just the place to extend that passion to the pavement. For those with an inclination to race there is ART Motorsports Racing School. ART stands for Asia Racing Team and they have found a home to teach potential drivers at the Zhuhai International Circuit.

The one-day intensive training course offered by ART gives its participants the opportunity to train in a single-seater, fully-serviced 2004-production Formula Renault 2000. The essential fundamentals that are taught will take trainees beyond just the thrills of speeding on the motorway. This

includes an explanation of the car’s electronic dashboard, how to change gears on the 6-speed box, and proper braking techniques as well as left-foot braking. This complex skill-set is usually not within the layman’s familiarity. Other essential parts of the class include how to take on corners and steering, all while accompanied by an instructor. One-on-one attention is also another advantage that training with ART brings. Class sizes are limited to two at the most! ART also has a great record, they’ve trained over 100 people in the past 5 years.

The ART Motorsports Racing School is the only formal driver training course recognized

by both the Hong Kong Automobile Association (HKAA) and the Associação

Geral Automóvel de Macau-China (AAMC). The participants will get a

certificate by the end of the course which is recognised by the Hong

Kong and Macau Motorsport Association. With the certificate

they can apply for a National “C” racing license. This certification is perfect for those interested

in racing as well as those aspiring to be the next Formula 1 star. In either case, abilities acquired offer a foray into the exciting world of professional driving.

After a thorough look-round the ground floor, the group heads upstairs passing stands of pickled vegetables of every imaginable variety. The next floor is where the pigs from earlier have ended up. Now they are split up into respective ribs, roast, rump, tenderloin, etc. Nothing goes to waste at the market. There is no distinguishable smell in the air and, also surprisingly, no flies to be seen. The freshness factor and high density of fans inside the market means that the meat is kept in a well-odored environment. On the same level, past the meat is the vegetable section. Tables are packed full of different kinds of leafy greens, another local favorite. One of the group members has found asparagus, in season and a beautiful, gentle green. She buys a bunch and is already on the way to making a fresh dinner.

coming in and out. The tour group met by the flower section, which is located near the entrance of the market. The bright morning sun illuminated the opening buds and the soft breeze carried their sweet scent in the air. “Here come the pigs,” Chef Michel announced, as a truck of twenty or so strung-up pigs rolled past. Several women with wooden hand carts ran over to the truck and a moment later they each came back with half a pig to push into the market. “The pigs were slaughtered this morning and then they bring them straight here,” Chef Michel explained. And the tour was ready to begin.

The ground floor is the seafood floor. Vendors display their catches on tables in front of them. Chao Yang Market is particularly known for its seafood selection and today is no disappointment. Huge, whole fish lay on display while sellers hawk their prices by the jin*. Netted sacks of lives eels lie next to already-shelled

Just a short-walk away from the edifice that is Jusco Supermarket is Chao Yang open-air market. In this three-story market a shopper can find all the meat, vegetable, fruit, and spices to make a stunning meal, and a pot to cook it all in! Chao Yang is just one of the many open-air markets that can be found in most neighborhoods in Zhuhai. But it was at this market that Chef Michel Seyve, head chef of the Holiday Inn, lead a group of novices on a journey of culinary exploration.

Chef Michel holds regular cooking classes to teach interested gourmands some of the vast knowledge he has acquired from over thirty-years of professional cooking experience. On this sunny Monday morning, however, Chef Michel was teaching a group about the treasure trove of ingredients that lie inside Chao Yang. The contents of this massive market can be intimidating to many shoppers with little experience in the Chao Yang Market. For starters, this local-style of open market is in stark contrast to sterile supermarkets that sell everything pre-packaged and frozen. Not to mention, the many culinary delights that only locals truly know about.

The market was already alive with the hustle and bustle of shoppers and goods

scallop-like creatures. Jumbo tiger prawns imported from Thailand or possibly Pakistan

make an eye-catching exhibit. Chef Michel draws the group’s attention to a basket of small, white, squid-

like creatures. “These are very fresh!” he exclaims, “Look

at their color, these calamari are so fresh

they’re still white. The less fresh ones turn a

dark pink color.” He then demonstrates how to pull the tiny beak out of each one

before they can be stir-fried or boiled into a delicious meal.

Never one to leave people with hunger pangs, Chef Michel arranges for the Holiday Inn van to pick-up his guests and take them back to the Inn’s Chatterbox Cafe for a specially prepared lunch. He has surely inspired many who participated in the event to have a try at some new ingredients. If anything, the introduction to the market has shown that buying local is not only comparable to large grocery stores, but much more fun.

You can taste any of Chef Michel’s culinary creations at the Holiday Inn. He puts on regular cooking classes, so stay tuned for those. The Chao Yang market is located a few blocks north of Jusco and can also be accessed by Lover’s Road. It is on the conveniently- named Chao Yang Road.

Other oddities encountered were a leafy deep purple plant from Japan that has a strong smell and flavor. Chef Michel also points out garlic flower buds, long stalks with tiny tips at the top, which most of the group had never seen before.

Further on away from the vegetables are sacks full of nuts, dried fishes, spices, beans, and grains. The education continues; long bark-like strips prove to be cinnamon and a dried shrunken circle is actually an orange rind. Passing a selection of large eggs Chef Michel informs the group, “Duck eggs are the best for pastries and baking, people seem to have forgotten that these days.” All this talk, looking at, and learning about food. The group is starting to get hungry.

There are two categories of 'persons' under the FCPA: issuers and domestic concerns. An issuer is a basically a listed company that has filing requirements with the Securities Exchange Commission – the enforcing agent with respect to FCPA for issuers. A domestic concern is an individual or any form of business organisation not registered with the SEC. The U.S. Department of Justice has enforcement responsibility with respect to domestic concerns.

With respect to an offer to give something of value, keep in mind there is no materiality to this act. It is illegal to offer anything of value as a bribe, including cash or non-cash items. The government focuses on the intent of the bribery rather than on the amount.

Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Implications for U.S. Businesses in China Hank Bourg

The 1988 Trade Act by the Congress of the United States directed the U.S. Attorney General to provide guidance to potential exporters and small business regarding the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977, an act all U.S. businesses operating in China need to be familiar with.

The FCPA prohibits the 'corrupt' payment of money or bribes to foreign officials for the purpose of keeping or maintaining business. The FCPA also links in with several other U.S. acts, providing for federal prosecution of violations of state commercial bribery statutes. The FCPA requires U.S. listed companies to meet their accounting provisions, which are designed to operate in parallel with the anti-bribery provisions of the FCPA and require corporations to make and keep books and records that accurately

and fairly reflect the transactions of the corporation and to devise and maintain an adequate system of internal accounting controls.

A potential violation of the FCPA would include the following elements:

An act by a covered person; An offer to give something of value; To a foreign official ;To obtain or retain business; With corrupt intent.

'Foreign official' is broadly defined by FCPA. Anyone working for a government-owned or managed institution or enterprise (including doctors, lawyers and accountants) is considered a foreign official. Any business person that also serves a foreign governmental agency is a foreign official. Also, employees of international organisations are also considered to be foreign officials under the FCPA. Any U.S. business operating in China must pay particular attention to this broad definition as many Chinese business people are also government officials. Ignorance of the person’s status does not provide exemption from prosecution for a violation of the act.

It does not matter whether there is an existing business relationship with the foreign official. So an offer of value to acquire business or to prevent the loss of business is covered by the act.

Corrupt intent encompasses the notion of a benefit given or offered to persuade a foreign official to misuse their position or authority through action or inaction and it includes quid pro quo arrangements. Quid pro quo generally assumes the benefit is given with reasonable expectations of some official favour in return. The quid pro quo does not need to have been executed nor does the foreign official need not be able to deliver it themselves. Again, note that the U.S. government does not need to establish the defendant knew their conduct violated the FCPA.

Hank Bourg is a U.S. certified public accountant and the head of the North American desk at Dezan Shira & Associates. For comments or inquiries, please contact him at [email protected].

FCPA prohibits 'corrupt' payment of money or bribes to foreign officials

There’s a green and white sign for Feng Huang Shan Zhuang pointing up a somewhat sketchy looking unpaved road. The restaurant is located at the top of the hill and overlooks the small strip of village life below it. It’s not a small eatery by any means with a large central dining area, several private rooms, and pagodas connected by walkways. There’s a beautiful view and the fresh air from the sea, but what about the food? The specialty at this place is freshness. In fact, most of the ingredients at Feng Huang Shan Zhuang are grown on location. The fish and turtles swim in the large pool that divides the central room. Out back, vegetables of all kinds are grown and behind that is the hen house, although some chickens to escape and are quite free to wander the grounds. Real free-range chicken!

For lunch I tried some of their own greens simmered in a broth and topped with garlic and preserved egg. Next up was two sides of boned, fresh fish sitting atop a light soy sauce and topped with spring onion. Lastly, was the house specialty, fresh chicken steamed in lotus

leaves with ginger, herbs, and mushrooms. It was a delectable meal for three that cost only 109元.

What a great find, just off the beaten track.

To access Feng Huang Shan Zhuang follow Lover’s Rd. to Mei Li Wan apartment complexes and turn left, continue straight until a sign for the restaurant, then make a right. Follow the unpaved road up the hill, at the top is Feng Huang Shan Zhuang.

Music is really the centrepiece of Bossa Nova. The small stage of the cafe is packed full of instruments. At the front, is the eye-catching mic that distinguishes this stage from any other. “This microphone can really strip your voice down,” explains owner Frances, “When you sing into this mic, your voice is naked.” Most nights, will find An on stage ripping riffs on an electric guitar

or creating intricate melodies on an acoustic. Lead singer Frances has a smooth jazz voice that is really a treat to hear. Many liken her singing to Japanese jazz singer Kyoko Lee. She counts Ella Fitzgerald and Billy

places

Bossa Nova is a famed musical style which blends Latin and Jazz influences together. The Bossa Nova Café located in Gongbei blends together live music, food, coffee, and people into its own style. The idea for a such a place was an organic thought; born out of a local jazz group Dark Blue. One of its members, An, wanted to bring together his passion of jazz into a tangible location. Along with business partner and former Dark Blue lead singer, Frances this vision became Bossa Nova Cafe about a year ago.

The journey to find the perfect location was not simple or easy. An and Frances hit the pavement to find a suitable place to start their dream location. “We didn’t even have a budget for transportation, we had to walk everywhere!” exclaims Frances. The pair searched exhaustively before settling on a top corner spot that overlooks the busy road below.

Music has truly brought all of them together. Another serendipitous occurrence brought in the essential culinary element to the Bossa Nova equation. Head chef, Zhang Xiao Yong was a former drummer at a previous Dark Blue gig. Trained as a sous chef in a five-star hotel, Chef Yong proudly serves specials that are meant to catch the eye. “I enjoy the special moment when the dish is served and the customer is amazed by the beautiful presentation of food,” says Yong. He also strives to use local ingredients to create western-themed dishes that are affordable for everyone.

Holiday among others as her influences. She has a loyal fan following from Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan that frequent the cafe.

Bossa Nova Café was created out of a passion for music and a philosophy on life. The stage is open and other musicians are encouraged to come down for a jam. In fact, artistic sharing is really the philosophy behind Bossa Nova. Owner, An explains, “We wanted to create a type of cultural salon. A place where we could share our point of view on jazz, beauty, and life.” This is the direction that owners and loyal customers of Bossa Nova continue to follow. Bossa Nova stands as a unique place in the Zhuhai live music scene because of its emphasis on jazz music. An sums it up: “We wanted a place with soul.”

Feng Huang Shan Zhuang is a local restaurant that is a bit off the main road. In fact, I found this place wandering around the Mei Li Wan area, which is known for its oysters and sea views. Past the high-rise apartment complexes that are being constructed right now, the roads become a little more bumpy. Further down the way, people’s front yards become farming patches of bananas, squash, tomatoes, and green vegetables.

Having new friends from an international community has brought my attention to many new found food loves. One of them highlighted here is mustard, and on the side, many new German sausages.

My partner and I were introduced to mustard in a tube, a German thing, and that there were mild, regular, and extra hot varieties. We fell in love with the extra hot one. It’s excellent served with freshly grilled or B.B.Q. sausages. The one shown in the photo is a German Breakfast Sausage called Nürnberger Bratwurst. Another way I love to use it is making a mustard aioli for making potato salad.

Mustard AioliCombine ingredients in a Jar:

• 1/4 c olive oil

• 1/4 c mayonnaise

• 1/4 c water or chicken stock

• 2 T hot mustard paste

• 1 t crushed garlic

• 1 t lemon juice

• 1/8 t paprika

• + salt & pepper to flavour

Nürnberger Brats with Mustard Aioli Potato Salad Text and Photos © Kaishin Chu

Shake until well blended.

Enough sauce for 10 med. potatoes

Garnish with parsley or green onion bits.

A good substitute for the extra hot German mustard is the Japanese hot mustard. I’ve used the powder one, premix first into the paste, then use in recipe.

This is excellent as a dip or served with grilled meats as well.

Rude - once regarded as one of the finest cocktail bars in town - has shed its skin and reopened as a coffee lounge. Whilst it carries a lot of the magic present there before (thank goodness there wasn’t a complete refit!) Rude is understandably catering to a more local crowd which means losing a few special elements from the mix. Did someone say ‘ahead of its time’ a little too often? Still, the steaks and the coffee appear to have had a very welcome upgrade.

JK closed its doors for the very last time (before the entire front of the bar was ripped out!) last month - much to the dismay of many that found it a perfect hang-out, from the early after-dinner crowd to the late-night stumblers who found peace and quiet or the after-party they were longing for.

MTC, next door to the abandoned LV Club went from a seemingly vast renovation period to closing indefinitely last month.

All said, I am here to present change, not decline. La Mouton (underneath MTC) continues to serve some of the finest sushi in town and the All-You-

Can-Eat Sushi and Tepanyaki Buffet in the Kingward Hotel is not to be missed.

A little further up the road and the Roman Seaside Cafe recently re-opened it’s doors under the new ownership of Big Jim and his wonderful family. The 40-strong staff are ready and waiting for your visit...

Seven Club managed to install a wonderful seating terrace - giving a VIP feel to anyone sitting on it - and added to their already excellent Interntaionl menu with Japanese and Western dishes to delight the pallette.

Watch out for Danis’ Corner - opening directly next to Peccati di Gola on Lover’s Road. Danis’ fun and friendly attitude is bound to make this a regular spot for many with bellies full of Stefano’s fine fare (and Simone’s penchant for limoncello).

Casa Pepe has transformed the Bar Street experience for discerning Chinese and, it would seem, all the foreigners that have discovered this superb wine and tapas bar.

La Bohemia opens it’s doors any day now and will again show that Bar Street is undergoing further change.

Ryan’s Bar, The Old Chinese Junk and Double Star Cafe Restaurant (with the dynamic Stella Lau leading marketing efforts) have all been notably active in trying to gain your custom, offering games, parties, special offers and events, live music, DJs and fantastic food - only making Zhuhai a better place to be for all.

The only conclusions your correspondant can reach are that change is good and Zhuhai continues to suprise and delight us all. All you can do is continue to be present and support these ventures by popping out for a bite to eat or a drink a little more often - afterall, life is there for living!

Whilst I cannot claim to be able to keep up with the ever changing nightlife alone, I get a little help from my friends. If you would like to meet them and find out more, head on over to www.ZhuhaiNights.com

Words/photography by Mark Clulow

Over the last few issues dear reader, I have tried to keep abreast of nocturnal happenings to bring some insight to those that want to know more or to those that are happy to keep it at a distance but like to remain informed. Little did I know what a heady task this would turn out to be!

It seems that the Zhuhai skyline - regardless of the time of day is destined to change at a fast pace despite the heat and humidity.
