Here’s how we can do it...

# 1 Football Fridays

Show your support for team South Africa by wearing your football shirts to work

every Friday. It is an opportunity to get the company excited about all things

soccer. Friday will become synonymous with soccer, and provide the inspiration

to become phenomenal hosts for the world’s biggest soccer tournament.

# 2 Fly the flag for football

Our national flag is a recognisable symbol of unity and hope to all South Africans

and the international face of South Africa around the world. Encouraging

everyone in your company to fly the flag for football will create a lasting spirit of

unity and pride. Your organisation can help to create a more united South Africa.

# 3 The diski dance

Learn South Africa’s own diski dance; a series of some of soccer’s simple

moves translated into dance. Use your moves to give 2010 FIFA World Cup™

visitors a uniquely South African welcome.

# 4 Our national anthem

Our national anthem gives voice to our pride in South Africa and allows

us to celebrate our nationhood. Learning the words and singing it together is

something that unites us all.

Assemble your team

and FLY! For the first time in history, the biggest soccer tournament on the planet will be hosted in Africa. This is a unique chance to welcome the world and show how proud we are to be South African.

Now is the time to stand united and support not only our national team, but all five African teams competing for glory. That is the name of the game.

Football Fridays

There are precious few Fridays until kickoff. So starting now, make

every Friday a Football Friday. This is the day we celebrate all things foot-

ball. The day we all discover our passion for the beautiful game.

Wearing football shirts to work every Friday is the first step on the road

to becoming true football enthusiasts. Join forces with other corporate

companies to mobilise employees around the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and

to get them excited about the biggest sporting show on earth.

This is a rare opportunity to ignite the flame of good sportsmanship by

building local support and enthusiasm. It is vital that we take advantage of

every possible opportunity to encourage all South Africans to make

a positive contribution to this event. It is also an opportunity to celebrate

African unity and support all the African teams representing the continent.

Here are some other ideas to build excitement, we are sure you will have quite a few of your own too.

• Start inter-departmental or inter-company soccer leagues

on Friday afternoons.

• Invite local soccer enthusiasts to give vuvuzela lessons to

the many people who don’t know how to blow one.

• Host face painting lessons, to inspire individuals to create their

own football and flag designs.

• Bring in a makarapa expert to show the staff how to

make their own unique makarapas.

There are many ways in which you can get people excited about the

2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Go ahead - live football, on and off the pitch, at work and at home.

Fly the flag for football

The South African flag is the most graphic and recognisable symbol of

our nation and deserves to be the centre piece of this campaign. It has to

be big, bright and in-your-space. The flag should fly everywhere.

Your organisation’s building is only one of the opportunities waiting to be

seized. It is also the biggest. So arrange for a flag wrap right now.

Possibilities also worth looking into include:

• branding the wall or fence of your building

• decorating the reception areas and/or the boardrooms

with large flags

Giveaways and prizes for the staff:

•hand-held flags

•flag-branded mugs

•‘fly the flag’ bumper stickers

•‘fly the flag’ screen savers

See the prizes and giveaways section for more ideas.

The national anthem

The people you work with are proud to sing the national anthem but do

they know the words and understand them? Quite a few of them need

a little encouragement and education. So why not stimulate interaction

by inviting a local celebrity/musician (or a colleague who can sing really

well) to teach the anthem to your co-workers.

Let’s learn the anthem and sing it loud… the world will be listening.

Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo,

Yizwa imithandazo yethu,Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,

O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika.

Uit die blou van onse hemel,Uit die diepte van ons see,Oor ons ewige gebergtes,

Waar die kranse antwoord gee.Sounds the call to come together,

And united we shall stand,Let us live and strive for freedom,

In South Africa our land.

There are various opportunities within your working environment

waiting to be explored. Why not email the anthem to the staff and your

clients, play it over the PA system during lunch/social hours or use it as

the background tune on your phone holds? The possibilities are endless.

The national flag is one of the country’s most important symbols and

therefore must, at all times, be treated with dignity and respect.

Do:

•stand respectfully when the flag is officially hoisted

•take off your hat as a sign of respect

•place your right hand over your heart in salute

•fly the flag the right side up (ensure that the black triangle of

the flag is to your left and the red band uppermost)

•fly a clean and smart flag

Don’t:

•allow the flag to touch the ground

•use the flag as a table cloth or drape it in front of a platrorm

•use the flag to cover a statue or the likes

•make use of the flag as a bath or floor mat

•use the flag for commercial advertising in a manner

that will distort or show disrespect to the flag
