������ Step by Step - A Course in Basic English (Part I) is designed for

Turkish university freshman students who take a compulsory Basic English

course two hours a week, for two semesters. The primary aim of this course

is to acquaint students with the basics of English language and use in all

four language skills and to introduce them to its culture in a way so as to

initiate both a means for further study in their departments and a positive

feeling towards learning a foreign language. The students attending this

course, who could not pass the English Exemption Test, come from a

variety of departments, ranging from Faculty of Medicine to Department of

Turkish Language Teaching or Faculty of Forestry and start from the

beginning to receive a total of 60 hours of English, at the end of which they

take an achievement test. It follows naturally that the coursebook chosen

for this course cannot be a demanding one with a never-ending string of

isolated grammar rules, vocabulary lists and language drills. Instead, it

should serve the needs of these students within the limited time period,

with suitable topics and tasks for young adults with varying interests and

backgrounds. These are the basic assumptions that brought forth this

book.

Step by Step is divided into nine units that are subdivided in

themselves. Each unit is designed to include activities of all four language

skills besides grammar and vocabulary. Dialogues to present real life

situations are amply made use of. You will find

that these present and/or practice the language item of the unit but can be

utilized as reading listening, speaking and reading texts. The emphasized

boxes contain language information to be remembered and will provide

grammar summaries for study. The reading texts are written on topics that

the students will both enjoy reading and get real-life information out of.

Different tasks can be done in order to utilize these texts- reading out loud,

paraphrasing, summarising, discussing, checking comprehension are to

name only a few.

The letter that is written from Tom to the student serves the function

of creating a meaningful context for the writing activity to take place. The

received letter covers all the previously studied language items and

represents language in its natural form. The letter that the student is asked

to write will give him/her the opportunity to respond to a real text in

English while recycling the learnt language items.

The vocabulary lists at the end of the book are for the student self-

study and for writing sentences using those words. The appendices are

speaking tasks to be done in pairs or groups in class.

If you wish to use this book, I hope you will enjoy the flexibility and

space it provides for your additions depending on the kind of student group

you are working with. Without rushing from one grammatical item to

another, I sincerely hope that you

II: EXPRESSING QUANTITY A:

Turkish people love drinking tea. They

drink tea to wake up in the morning, to have a

nice chat with friends, to keep warm in winter

and to keep awake in the evenings. That's a lot

of tea!

An average Turkish person drinks two cups of tea every day. But

people have different preferences. Some people drink it dark,

some people drink it mild. Some people add sugar in it, some

people don't. Some people add pieces of lemon. When you go to a

café and ask for tea, always tell your preference to the waiter.

There are many "tea-houses" in Istanbul. They have got many

different kinds of tea: Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Ceylon,

Turkish Tomurcuk, etc. Normally, a cup of tea doesn't cost much,

so it is a very pleasant way of relaxing and socializing.
