The Infosys Prize is an annual award that recognizes outstandingcontributions by scientists, researchers, engineers and social scientists inIndia. By recognizing and rewarding extraordinary accomplishments, theInfosys Prize aims to elevate the prestige of pure and applied sciencesresearch in India. The Prize hopes to fill a gap, to inspire young Indians, andto help scientists continue their good work. 2010 winners were felicitated inJanuary 2011 by Dr. Manmohan Singh at a prize ceremony in Mumbai, andreceived a prize of INR 5 million,along with a pure gold medallion and acitation certificate.

Background

Research in pure and applied sciences in India, despite stellar achievementsin recent times, has not been given the encouragement, support andrecognition it deserves. A lacuna in support exists despite Indias rich

heritage in scientific enquiry that continues to date.

However, the Government of India, with an increase in the outlay on highereducation in itsEleventh Five-Year Plan, breathed change into the scientificcommunity. In the light of this move, encouragement from other quartersmight further inject vitality into scientific research in India.

Life Sciences and Medicine

Prof. Inder Verma is a Professor in Laboratory of Genetics at the SalkInstitute for Biological Studies. He is also an American Cancer SocietyProfessor in Molecular Biology. One of the world's leading authorities on thedevelopment of virusesfor gene therapy vectors, Dr. Verma uses geneticallyengineered viruses to insert new genes into cells that can then be returned tothe body, where they produce the essential protein whose absence causesdisease. He became the firstincumbent of the Irwin Mark Jacobs Chair inExemplary Life Sciences in 2009. In 2008, the Vilcek Foundation named Dr.Vermaas the recipient of its prize in biomedicalscience. He has also beenconferred the NIH Outstanding Investigator Award (1988).

Social Sciences

Prof. Amartya Sen is Lamont University Professor and Professor ofEconomics and Philosophy at Harvard University. He won the Nobel Prizein Economics in 1998. Infosys was founded on 2 July 1981 by seven entrepreneurs:N. R. NarayanaMurthy,Nandan Nilekani,Kris Gopalakrishnan,S. D. Shibulal,K. Dinesh,Ashok Arora, and withN. S. Raghavanofficially being the first employee ofthe company. The founders started the company with an initial investment ofINR10,000. Infosys was the only Indian company to win the Global MAKE (Most

Admired Knowledge Enterprises) award for the years 2003, 2004 and 2005,and is inducted into the Global Hall of Fame for the same.

The first development center outside Bangalore was setup in the coastal cityof Mangalore in the year 1995.

Life Insurance Corporation of Indiawith 3.84% is the single largestshareholder.Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, a sovereign wealth fund

Program, known as InStep, is one of the key components ofthe AcademicEntente initiative. It offers live projects to interns from universities aroundthe world. InStep recruits undergraduate and graduatestudents frombusiness, technology, and liberal arts universities to take part in an 8 to 24

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Infosys Ltd, India's No.2 software servicesexporter, reported a 9.7-percent rise in quarterly profit and cut its full-yearsales outlook by less-than-expected, easing investor worries of a sharpslowdown in the outsourcing sector.

Kicking off results for India's nearly $76 billion IT sector, Infosys sharesrose 6 percent on Wednesday to their highest level in more than two months,outperforming a 1.4 percent rise in the broader market.

The company, which counts Goldman Sachs and BT Group among its mainclients, trimmed its dollar revenue growth forecast to 17.1 percent to 19.1percent for the fiscal year, from 18 percent to 20 percent projected earlier.

"The dollar revenue guidance cut is due to a cut in discretionary spending byclients. But it was modest compared with what people had expected,"saidJagannadham Thunuguntla, research head at SMC Global Securities.

He said analysts had expected Infosys to slash its dollar revenue outlook by4 to 5 percentage points.

Infosys' quarterly profit was in line with estimates after it laggedexpectations in the previous three quarters. Its premium gap with bigger rivalTata Consultancy Services has narrowed in recent months as it lagged inearnings growth.

Infosys added 8,262 staff in the quarter ended September - its highest pace ofquarterly staff addition in at least four years. The company maintained itsprevious forecast of adding 45,000 people in this fiscal year.

"The hiring number indicates that the company sees strong growth aheaddespite economic uncertainty. Whether this assumption is right or wrong, wehave to wait and see," said Ankur Rudra, a sector analyst with AmbitCapital.

By 0800 GMT, Infosys was up 5.7 percent at 2,649 rupees per share in aMumbai market up 1 percent. Sector leader Tata Consultancy Services

gained 3.2 percent and No. 3 Wipro rose 3.4 percent.

Nasdaq-listed Infosys said consolidated net profit rose to 19.06 billionrupees ($387 million) for the fiscal second quarter ended Sept. 30, from17.37 billion rupees reported a year ago, as a weaker rupee boosted results.

Revenue rose 16.6 percent to 81 billion rupees as the company added 45clients in the quarter.

A Reuters poll of brokerages had forecast a profit of 18.9 billion rupees onrevenue of 81.2 billion rupees for the company.

India's IT sector, which feeds off increased outsourcing by companieslooking to cut costs, is expected to face pricing pressure and a decline in neworders as Europe struggles with a debt crisis and the United States sees aneconomic slowdown.

Infosys and its local rivals also face stiff competition from global players

including IBM and Accenture for large outsourcing deals from globalcorporations.

Infosys Chief Financial Officer V. Balakrishnan said the reduction inforecast was mainly due to currency volatility.

Balakrishnan said the sovereign debt crisis in Europe was a "big issue" and aslowdown in the United States and European economies could impactspending on technology services by its clients.

Europe is the second largest market for India's software firms, which havebeen looking to increase their sales to the region to hedge against their

excessive exposure to the United States that accounts for more than half theirsales.

UNCERTAINTY

"The global macroeconomic environment is still uncertain. It is and shouldbe a concern for the IT industry," S.D. Shibulal, chief executive officer ofInfosys, said in a statement.

"There is uncertainty and unemployment in the U.S. and Europe, there isuncertainty in the financial and banking segments. So all these are leading tocustomers being more cautious in their investment decisions, more

thoughtful about the areas in which they invest," Shibulal told reporters.

Infosys earned 65.3 percent of its revenue in the second quarter from theUnited States versus 65.8 percent from a year ago, while Europe accountedfor 20.5 percent of its revenue, down from 21.8 percent a year ago.

The company expects its dollar revenue to rise to $7.08 billion to $7.2 billionin the fiscal year ending March 2012, down from its forecast of $7.13 billionto $7.25 billion in July.

It raised its earnings per American shares growth forecast for the full fiscalyear to 15.3 to 16.8 percent from 10 to 11.5 percent guided in April.

Infosys CFO Balakrishnan said the company's operating margins in thecurrent quarter could rise 1.6 percent due to a weak rupee, which has fallen11 percent since August when it touched its 2011 high.

The company, however, expects margins for the full year to drop about onepercentage points from a year ago due to higher wages.

"The results have been helped partly by the depreciation in the rupee. Themain thing to watch out for will be how the U.S. and Europe will move inthe coming months," said R.K. Gupta, Managing Director at Taurus AssetManagement.

Infosys, worth about $29 billion, has lost more than a quarter of its market

value this year, roughly in line with a 25 percent fall in the sector index, butoutperforming a 19 percent decline in the Mumbai market index.
