WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Census Bureau today released more detailed 2010 Census population totals and demographic characteristics to the governor and leadership of the state legislature in

Arkansas. Whites make up 77 percent

of the population in Census 2010, up from 5 percent in 2000.

The black population was up 7.4 percent of the state’s population. The Hispanic population double growing

from 86,866 in Census 2000 to 186,050 in 2010 with 6.4 percent of the total population. These data provide the first look at population counts for small areas and race, Hispanic origin, voting age and housing unit data released from the 2010 Census.

The census data are used by state offi cials to realign congressional and state legislative districts in their states, taking into account population shifts since the 2000 Census.

Data for Arkansas show that the five most populous incorporated places and their 2010 Census counts are Little Rock, 193,524; Fort Smith, 86,209; Fayetteville, 73,580;

Springdale, 69,797; and Jonesboro, 67,263. Little Rock grew by 5.7 percent since the 2000 Census. Fort Smith grew by 7.4 percent, Fayetteville grew by 26.8 percent, Springdale grew by 52.4 percent, and Jonesboro by 21.2 percent.

The largest county is Pulaski with a population of 382,748. Its population grew by 5.9 percent since 2000. The other counties in the top fi ve include Benton, with a population of 221,339 (increase of 44.3 percent); Washington, 203,065 (increase of 28.8 percent); Sebastian, 125,744 (increase of 9.3 percent); and Faulkner, 113,237 (increase of 31.6 percent).

The redistricting file consists of fi ve detailed tables: the fi rst shows the population by race, including six single race groups and 57 multiple race groups (63 total race categories); the second shows the Hispanic or Latino population as well as the non-Hispanic or Latino population cross-tabulated by the 63 race categories. These tabulations are repeated in the third and fourth tables for the population 18 years and over and are for the resident population of the United States. The fi fth table provides counts of housing units and their occupancy status.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Racial minorities are now the majority in Little Rock, according to 2010 Census data. Blacks make up 43.3 percent of the population in 2010, up from 40.4 percent in 2000. The Hispanic population tripled, growing from 4,889 in 2000 to 13,076.

While the Hispanic population doubled and blacks saw a small increase, the white population dropped. In 2010,

whites made up 48.9 percent of the population, compared to 55.1 percent in 2000.

“We are becoming more diverse like the world is,” says Jim McKenzie, executive director of Metroplan.

Metroplan is an agency that supports economic growth. McKenzie says what was referred to as “white fl ight” to suburbs was an issue in the 80s and 90s, now whites are leaving for other reasons.

“They built up critical mass and they are attractive places

to live in their own right,” says McKenzie.

Director of Arkansas Census Data Center Phyllis Poche says this movement appears to be more economic than racial.

“As people become more affl uent they tend to move out; there is a movement of blacks to move outside the city; it’s not just whites,” says Poche.

UALR Chancellor Joel Anderson has conducted studies of race relations in Central Arkansas.

“I think people can move to

a different community for reasons unrelated to race. I think we have to be careful to of how much of the change we would attribute to what is typically called ‘white fl ight’, says Anderson.

Dr. Anderson and Poche say the white population moved to suburbs like Bryant, Maumelle, Conway, and Cabot. The white population there have all increased.

Dr. Anderson is developing a Race and Ethnicity institute to survey the community about the shift in population.

Las enfermedades cardiovasculares y los derrames cerebrales son la principal causa de muerte entre los latinos que viven en los Estados Unidos. Casi uno de cada cuatro latinos muere a causa de una enfermedad

cardíaca. La presión arterial alta, la diabetes, la obesidad, el colesterol alto y la inactividad física infl uyen en el creciente número de latinos que padecen de enfermedades cardíacas.

La principal manera de prevenir un ataque cardíaco es

realizarse un chequeo médico anual. Los exámenes son sencillos y pueden realizarse en el consultorio del médico; incluyen el control de la presión arterial, del colesterol y de la diabetes. Hacer una visita al médico una vez al

año es un paso muy pequeño que podemos dar, teniendo en cuenta que los ataques cardíacos son muy comunes y pueden ocurrir sin previo aviso. Los síntomas incluyen:

* Molestias en el pecho. La mayoría de los ataques cardíacos comienzan con una molestia en el centro del pecho que dura más de unos minutos. Es una presión molesta, durante la cual el paciente podría sentir una especie de presión en el pecho, que eventualmente se transforma en dolor.

* Malestar en partes superiores del cuerpo. El paciente podría sentir dolor o molestias en uno o ambos brazos, en la espalda, el cuello, la mandíbula o el estómago.

* Let’s Get Physical: Perform a physical activity at

least thirty minutes daily. Start with a

brisk walk around the block or the park daily

and eventually add some light weight training into your

Cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing fatty buildups in arteries, several types of cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (lung problems). Many studies detail the evidence that cigarette smoking is a major cause of heart disease.

By April 1, all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will receive these data for the following areas: state, congressional districts (for 111th Congress), counties, minor

civil divisions, state legislative districts, places, school districts, census tracts, block groups and blocks, and if applicable, American Indian and Alaska Native areas and Hawaiian home lands. In addition, data are available for the 46 states

that voluntarily provided voting districts to the Census Bureau’s Redistricting Data Program. Unique geographies for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico are also available.

The 2010 Census results provide new data on the size

and makeup of the nation’s multiracial population.

Respondents who reported more than one of the six race groups are included in the “two or more races” population. There are 57 possible combinations of the six race groups.

The Census Bureau included the “some other race” category for responses that could not be classifi ed in any of the other race categories on the questionnaire. In the 2000 Census, the vast majority of people who reported only as “some other race” were

of Hispanic or Latino origin. Data on Hispanics or Latinos, who may be of any race, were obtained from a separate question on ethnicity.

ACCEPT INTERNSHIPSWhile internships are

generally viewed as opportunities for current students, it never hurts to look for internships available

to recent graduates as well. Some internships prefer only graduates. In such cases, these non-paying internships are offered because the company is experiencing a hiring freeze but could still use additional personnel. Accepting an internship with a company doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll automatically be hired once that hiring freeze is lifted, but it defi nitely puts you in a far better position than if you weren’t to go the internship route.

AR – The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) announced that Mexican native Francisco Morales is among the riders scheduled to compete against the fiercest bucking bulls at Verizon Arena on Saturday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Morales have represented Mexico in every Professional Bull Riders World Cup 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He finished second in Round 2 with 90.25 points on Sydvicious at World Cup in Gold Coast, Australia in 2007. Morales had multiple Top 3 fi nishes at Touring Pro Division events, including victory at San Antonio.

In addition to Morales, qualifi ers from the 2010 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals scheduled to ride include Cord McCoy, Josh Faircloth, Caleb Sanderson, Billy Robinson, Mark Lopes, David Kennedy, Reese Cates and Pete Farley.

The development tour for the BFTS series, the TPD features established veterans and newcomers competing against some of the most famous bucking bulls.

The TPD gives riders the opportunity to compete in PBR-sanctioned events while earning money to qualify for the nationally televised Built

Ford Tough Series, which is comprised of the Top 40 bull riders in the world. Every fi ve events on the BFTS, the Top 5 riders (based on money earned) from the TPD are allowed to move into the BFTS.

The 2011 BFTS season began at world-famous Madison Square Garden in New York on January 7-9. It all culminates

October 26-30 in Las Vegas at the richest bull-riding event in the world, the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, where the 2011 PBR World Champion will be crowned and awarded the $1 million Built Ford Tough bonus.

AR – The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) announced that Mexican native Francisco Morales is among the riders scheduled to compete against the fiercest bucking bulls at Verizon Arena on Saturday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Morales have represented Mexico in every Professional Bull Riders World Cup 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He finished second in Round 2 with 90.25 points on Sydvicious at World Cup in Gold Coast, Australia in 2007. Morales had multiple Top 3 fi nishes at Touring Pro Division events, including victory at San Antonio.

Students, teachers and administrators at nearly 300 high schools across the state will participate in a week of fun and unique activities designed to make college seem less of a mystery and more of a possibility.

During Say Go College Week students will be exposed to what college is like from various perspectives through Myth Busting Monday, How-To Tuesday, University “U” Wednesday, Show ‘N Tell Thursday, Go Time Friday, and

Think on it Saturday, all leading up to College Goal Sunday. Some of the topics students will be focusing on include dispelling common myths associated with college, going over what to expect as a freshman, and having the opportunity to discuss scholarship and loan possibilities.

“Making the choice to go to college not only impacts their fi rst couple years after high school but essentially the rest of their life,” said Dr. Jim Purcell, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. “Choosing to pursue a higher education

now will lead to better-paying jobs for more individuals, their families and children.”

In addition to recommended daily activities, some counselors have added their own spin and created additional events that help students and their families better understand that the process of pursuing a college education begins earlier than most anticipate. This effort has also been embraced by schools with a large Hispanic student population.

With Hispanics being America’s largest racial/ethnic minority and the fastest-growing

demographic of the young work force, high school students considering higher education today will meet future societal and workforce needs. The U.S. Census data estimates that by

IOWA CITY, IO - Registration is now open for the April 9, 2011 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before March 4, 2011.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for fi rst year credit-bearing college courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards. Every student’s results can be tied directly to these consistent

standards.The ACT has four sections,

English, mathematics, reading and science, and takes about three hours to complete. Students who take the ACT Plus Writing complete an optional writing test that requires an additional 30 minutes.

During registration, students may select up to four universities to receive their score reports. ACT scores are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities across the United States. ACT reports scores only when requested to do so by the student. Additional score reports are available for a small fee.

All students complete a detailed inventory of questions

during ACT registration. Each test taker receives an ACT score report that includes a wide variety of information to assist with high school course selection, college readiness, career planning, and college admissions.

The cost for the ACT test without writing is $33. When combined with the optional ACT Writing Test, the total cost is $48. Students who qualify may apply for a fee waiver through their high school counselor.

Además de las actividades diarias recomendadas, algunos consejeros han añadido su toque personal y han creado eventos adicionales que ayudan a los estudiantes y a sus familias a comprender mejor que el proceso de seguir una educación universitaria empieza antes de lo que la mayoría anticipa. Este esfuerzo también ha sido adoptado por escuelas con numerosa población de estudiantes hispanos.

Siendo los hispanos la minoría étnica/racial más grande de Estados Unidos y el grupo de más rápido crecimiento demográfico en la fuerza laboral joven, los estudiantes de secundaria que consideran la educación superior el día de hoy son quienes cubrirán las necesidades futuras de la sociedad y los requerimientos de fuerza laboral. Según los datos de la Ofi cina del Censo de EE.UU. se estima que para 2020 un 25% de la población de Estados con un rango de edad de 18 a 29 años estará constituida por hispanos, en comparación

con sólo el 18% en 2008. Además, se proyecta que aún habrá trabajos económicamente competitivos en los Estados Unidos y que ellos requerirán una mayor educación posterior a la obtención del diploma de secundaria.

“La Semana ‘Say Go College’ es un recurso excelente en el ámbito educativo para muchos de nuestros estudiantes hispanos”, dice Julia Boyle, consejera de Hall High School en Little Rock. “La mayoría de estos chicos serán la primera generación de sus familias en considerar la universidad, por lo que llegar allí es una experiencia de aprendizaje para la familia, así como para el estudiante. WASHINGTON, DC - El Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (Instituto del Comité de Congresistas Hispanos, o CHCI), la principal organización de servicios educativos para el desarrollo de jóvenes líderes latinos, dio la bienvenida el lunes, 7 de febrero de 2011 en Washington, D.C., a la segunda clase de alumnos que participarán en su programa primaveral de pasantías en el Congreso. Dieciséis estudiantes universitarios llegaron de 11 estados y de Puerto Rico para participar en el nacionalmente reconocido y galardonado programa CHCI Congressional Internship Program (CIP).

Con el apoyo de Walmart, el CIP ofrece tres sesiones de pasantías que cada año ofrecen a los estudiantes universitarios hispanos oportunidades de empleo sin precedentes en ofi cinas del Congreso en Capitol

Hill, así como la oportunidad de participar en el reconocido programa nacional de formación profesional y desarrollo de liderazgo del CHCI. El objetivo del programa es exponer a los estudiantes universitarios latinos con talento al funcionamiento

interno del gobierno federal, al mismo tiempo preparándolos para ocupar puestos de liderazgo en todos los sectores: público, privado y sin fi nes de lucro.

“El CHCI se ha comprometido a crear oportunidades para que los jóvenes latinos vengan a

Washington, D.C. y aprendan no sólo cómo el gobierno federal opera, sino también cómo pueden trabajar para infl uenciar la política pública con el fi n de mejorar sus comunidades”, dijo Esther Aguilera, presidenta y CEO del CHCI. “Gracias al apoyo de Walmart, estamos manteniendo la promesa hecha a la próxima generación de líderes, duplicando el número de pasantes en el Congreso durante los últimos dos años y asegurando que los pasillos del Congreso refl ejen con acierto en el futuro la creciente población hispana de Estados Unidos.”

MORRILTON, AR - Elena Lopez of Morrilton has been accepted to the Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, Tennessee. Southern College of Optometry ranks as one of the nation’s leading institutions of optometric education. The first two years of SCO’s four-year program consist primarily of lectures and labs. During the third year, students spend most of their days observing and assisting with exams in the school’s Eye Care Center, one of the largest and most

clinically advanced vision and eye care centers in the country. During the fourth year, students perform exams at the center and participate in externship programs throughout the country.

A 2006 highest honors graduate of Morrilton High School, Lopez graduated cum laude from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee in December 2009, with a degree in Psychology and minors in Chemistry and Biology.

HOT SPRINGS, AR - Janice Sullivan, dean of academic affairs at Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, successfully defended her dissertation to receive a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Florida in Tampa. She joined the ASMSA staff in July 2010.

Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Sullivan moved to the United States in 2003. She attended graduate school and received a master’s degree in human resources management from Webster University in St Louis, Mo., and an Ed.S. in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Florida.

“Her doctoral research topic was global leadership in higher

education administration and the role of university presidents and deans in internationalization,” said Mia Anderson, ASMSA director of communications.

Sullivan worked at the University of South Florida for fi ve years as a research associate and human resources administrator. At USF, she was instrumental in conducting research, coordinating professional development programs and securing grants for educational projects.

Prior to moving to the U.S., she was an architect, providing design, construction services, and instruction for public and private institutions including the Colombian Navy and the National University of Colombia.

She has been the recipient of eminent awards and honors including the Distinguished

Graduate Achievement Award from USF.

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts is one of 14 public residential high schools in the country specializing in the education of academically gifted juniors and seniors. MORRILTON, AR – El soldado de primera clase Valentín López III, de 21 años, de Morrilton, se graduó del campo de entrenamiento del Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos en el Centro de Reclutamiento de la Infantería de Marina (MCRD por sus siglas en inglés) en San Diego el 28 de enero de 2011. El soldado de primera clase López concluyó con éxito las 13 semanas de entrenamiento básico intensivo en el MCRD San Diego formando parte de 79 reclutas del Pelotón de Formación 2115.

Mientras asistía al entrenamiento básico, el soldado López alcanzó la puntuación más alta del pelotón en los exámenes prácticos y calificó como el mejor tirador del pelotón en Edson Range de Camp Pendleton. Tras diez días en casa de permiso, él se

WASHINGTON, DC - El Acta de Recuperación y Reinversión Americana del 2009 creó una nueva categoría de tres hijos o más para las familias y aumentó al máximo los benefi cios del EITC para los años tributarios 2009 y 2010. El Acta de Alivio Tributario y Creación de Empleos del 2010 amplió estos cambios hasta el 2012.

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 created a new category of families with three or more children and increased the maximum benefi t of EITC for tax years 2009 and 2010. The Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2010 extended these changes through 2012.

The maximum credit for 2010 tax returns is $5,666 for workers with three or more qualifying children. However, workers without qualifying children may also be eligible for a smaller credit amount.

“Millions of workers who did not earn high incomes claimed the EITC last year,” said Doug Shulman, IRS commissioner. “The IRS encourages all eligible taxpayers to claim this valuable

credit. Together with our partners, we can help taxpayers fi le their returns and get the EITC.”

Workers who earned $48,362 or less from wages, self-employment or farm income last year could receive larger refunds if they qualify for the EITC. Four out of five eligible taxpayers claimed the EITC last year obtaining an extra $2,200 from the credit on average. This represents a critical fi nancial boost to over 26 million workers who earn low to moderate incomes.

WASHINGTON, DC - El Acta de Recuperación y Reinversión Americana del 2009 creó una nueva categoría de tres hijos o más para las familias y aumentó al máximo los benefi cios del EITC para los años tributarios 2009 y 2010. El Acta de Alivio Tributario y Creación de Empleos del 2010 amplió estos cambios hasta el 2012.

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 created a new category of families with three or more children and increased the maximum benefi t of EITC for tax years 2009 and 2010. The Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2010 extended these changes through 2012.

The maximum credit for 2010 tax returns is $5,666 for workers with three or more qualifying children. However, workers without qualifying children may also be eligible for a smaller credit amount.

“Millions of workers who did not earn high incomes claimed the EITC last year,” said Doug Shulman, IRS commissioner. “The IRS encourages all eligible taxpayers to claim this valuable

credit. Together with our partners, we can help taxpayers fi le their returns and get the EITC.”

Workers who earned $48,362 or less from wages, self-employment or farm income last year could receive larger refunds if they qualify for the EITC. Four out of five eligible taxpayers claimed the EITC last year obtaining an extra $2,200 from the credit on average. This represents a critical fi nancial boost to over 26 million workers who earn low to moderate incomes.

Eligibility for the EITC is determined based on a number of factors including earnings, fi ling status and eligible children. Many people who experienced a change in these factors will qualify for the fi rst time this year and may not be aware of the credit.

Taxpayers must file a tax return, even if they do not

have a filing requirement, and specifically claim the credit. Those who typically fail to claim the EITC include rural workers and their families; non-traditional families, such as grandparents or foster parents raising children; taxpayers without qualifying children; individuals with limited English proficiency; Native Americans; and taxpayers with disabilities.

It is easy to verify eligibility for EITC by going to www.IRS.gov and typing “EITC” into the search box. There is an online EITC Assistant, which can help taxpayers determine eligibility by answering a few simple questions.
