Two Bath Rugby Community coaches, two primary school classes and their teacher, concocted a brilliant afternoon of fun. No-one wanted to go out into the rain, but once they were in the playing fi elds the sun came out, and it was thumbs up!Farmborough Primary School children were enjoying their third week of a fi ve week programme called School of Tag. When I arrived, the girls and boys from years three and four, including Miss Roberts their teacher, were running around playing tag. Foundation Manager, Jimmy Deane, was assisting the community

department and organised the boys and the girls into two separate teams - it was terrifi c to see them running about and shouting at the tops of their voices with the sheer determination to win. “It’s been brilliant,” said Miss Roberts, “we had Steve Middleton here last term, and Jimmy this. It’s always good, the children have loved it. We are doing the Tackling Numbers programme as well,” (this is a numeracy programme developed by Premiership Rugby).School of Tag is a fi ve week tag rugby programme set up with The Bath Rugby Community Team in conjunction with the Bath and North East Somerset School Sport Partnership to deliver coaching in and around Bath. When the course is complete, Bath Rugby gives all participating children and their families the opportunity to attend a Bath Rugby match at the Rec, and the opportunity to take part in a half-time pitch parade.

High Littleton’s two athletics teams travelled to Westfi eld Primary School on Wednesday 27th June for the annual Quadkids event. This consists of four events: 75m sprint, 600m run, vortex howler throw and standing long jump. Despite the weather, they had managed several training sessions and the teams did themselves proud, with some great individual and team performances. The High Littleton A team fi nished as winners of the small schools event and qualifi ed to take part in the County fi nals in Bristol, in which they fi nished 8th out of 16 teams, an excellent result.

The Year 6 pupils at High Littleton Primary School put on a fantastic performance of Bugsy Malone at the end of July. There was some great acting, singing and dancing and a few custard pies, water pistols and comedy cars as well! This was the culmination of a month’s hard work from all 22 pupils involved. The 100-strong audience laughed and cheered their way through the spectacle. Everyone was really proud; it was a great end to a very successful year.

Thirty families from 1st Midsomer Norton Scout Group attended a family camp and activity day at Tedbury, near Mells. On offer to almost all ages were shooting, orienteering, making bivouacs, fi relighting and abseiling. On the Saturday night the families gathered round the camp fi re for a barbecue, sing-song and a short business meeting. Janet Turner, District Commissioner, who was unable to be present, sent a personal message thanking all the adult leaders and supporters under Group Scout Leader Clare Spearman’s guidance for their valuable work with the youth of Midsomer Norton and for making local Scouting fun and adventurous during the past year.Photo: Sister and brother Ellie, a Rainbow aged 5, and Ben, a cub aged 8 after having each abseiled down a 60-foot rock face near Mells.

Scouts’ family campSt Marys Primary School in Writhlington received the ‘Outstanding’ award from The Royal Horticultural Society & South West in Bloom for the South West in Bloom competition and also a Gold in the winners category in the Bath in Bloom competition.The school children have been very busy with the help of governors, staff and the local community, planting, watering, weeding, nurturing and looking after all the various areas of the school grounds. All the hard work is clearly evident upon visiting the school with hanging baskets, planted tyres and miniature gardens. The children form teams to ensure the great work continues on the school grounds with the dinner ladies playing an important role supervising the watering teams, litter picking teams and also helping the children with their own allotments.The entire team are committed to raising standards and encouraging pupils to develop pride in themselves, their school and community.

Paulton Junior School have been awarded the top prize of ‘Overall Winner’ in the schools category in the Bath In Bloom competition. Four pupils representing the school gardening club visited the Guild Hall in Bath where the Bath In Bloom judges presented them with a magnifi cent trophy and a cheque for £200 which was donated by Bath University. There are currently 40 children in the Gardening Club who all worked very hard to achieve the award as well as 60 Year 3 pupils who all grew potatoes.

221 pupils from Paulton Junior School had the amazing opportunity to visit the Paralympics on the 7th September! It was an early start for the pupils, staff, governors and volunteers as they all left the school at 5am, six coaches pulled away from the school with the Olympic Village as their destination. The pupils watched several events; women’s long jump, men’s javelin, men’s wheelchair 200m heat and the men’s (blind) 100m heat. All the pupils completed assignments on their fantastic experience which are now proudly on display for all to see. A fantastic day was had by all and the coaches pulled back in to the school around 7pm...with some very tired passengers on-board.

Paralympics

Children at Peasedown St John Primary School sang their hearts out on 25th September when the recording studio from Pop stars Award Scheme was set up in their school hall. The children have recorded a CD of all the songs that have been signifi cant to them during 2012 including Olympic songs and Jubilee songs.Each year group took their turn in front of the microphone and recorded their own songs. The CD’s will be available to buy from the school offi ce from 1st November.

On Wednesday 18th September, the children of St John’s Primary School, Midsomer Norton, were given a rare opportunity: to view an Olympic torch. Many schools this

year will have had similar experiences, however this was unique: this torch was from the Olympics held in London in 1948! The pupils were able to hold the torch and compared and contrasted it with that of the 2012 torch. The most incredible thing for the children to imagine was the fact that, back in 1948, the torchbearer had to run three miles with a torch that was a little heavier than those of today! For the pupils in Year 6 (pictured above), whose current topic is World War Two, it was amazing to think of our capital city hosting an Olympics just three years after the end of the War. All in all, it was a wonderful visit that provided all of the children with a real insight into our country’s recent history.

Ingredients200g / 8oz caster sugar100g / 4oz margarine1 egg200g / 8oz pumpkin fl esh200g / 8oz plain fl our½ teacup chopped walnuts and raisins2 teaspoons cinnamon1 teaspoon baking powder1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda1 teaspoon vanilla extractMethodSet the oven at 190c/375F/Gas 5Cut off the pumpkin skin and chop fl esh into small cubes.Mix all ingredients together in a bowl with a wooden spoon.Place drops of mixture 4-5cms across onto a greased baking tray.Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove and cool on a wire tray.You could decorate using buttercream and sweets to make gruesome Halloween faces.

Did you know...• Bonfi re night is over 400 years old! It dates back to 1605

when Guy Fawkes and a group of other men tried to blow up Parliament.

• Guy Fawkes was not the leader of the Gunpowder Plot, it was actually a man called Robert Catesby.

• There is an island to the North of Santa Cruz called Isla Guy Fawkes...nobody knows why it is called this....maybe he planned to escape there.

• Fireworks were invented in China back in the 12th Century (AD 1100)!

• A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph, however the shell can reach as high as 200 metres.

• The worlds largest recorded fi rework display was held in Portugal in 2006 and it featured 66,326 fi reworks!

• At fi rst fi reworks were only orange and white, new colours were made in the middle ages by adding different salts. The hardest colour to create is blue

• 90% of the worlds fi reworks are made in China.• Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat

as a blow-torch.

Make sure you enjoy this year’s firework displays but please remember to stay safe.

Fireworks are fun but we must also remember they can be dangerous. If you are not going to an organised fi reworks event this year and plan to see off fi reworks at home, make sure that everyone knows all about how to stay safe.• Stand well back• Never go near a fi rework that has been lit, even if it

hasn’t gone off as it could still explode• Never put fi reworks in your pocket or throw them• Wear gloves when using sparklers and hold them at arms

length away from you• Put used sparklers hot end down in to a bucket of sand or

water• Keep pets indoors• Never throw used (or unused) fi reworks on a bonfi re• Never pick up a fi rework which may be left over, it may

still be active

Pumpkin Seed NecklaceThis pumpkin seed necklace, made in Halloween colours, makes a great accessory for Halloween and perfect for a witch’s costume! Alternatively, paint in more autumnal

colours.You will need:

Pumpkin seeds (roasted)Paint (orange, black, white and green)

Needle and thread(Kitchen foil to put seeds on while you paint them)

Instructions:Paint your pumpkin seeds in orange, green, white and black. The easiest way to do this is to put them on kitchen foil so

that they will not stick to anything while they dry.But it is a very messy job! When your seeds are dry, thread your needle with a length of thread long enough to go over your head with 3 or 4 inches to spare. Put your seeds a few at a time in a pile on newspaper or a thin sponge. One by

one push the needle down through the seed - when you have pierced the seed safely, pick it up and pull it through the

thread. When your thread is about two thirds fi lled, knot the ends together tightly. Note: you need a sharp needle for this so make sure children are well supervised or that an adult

does the threading.

very effective Halloween decoration. But an adult will need to supervise everything to do with the

You can get very creative making your Halloween candle jars, and we are sure you will come up with many different ideas. Basically you wrap the jar in a piece of tissue paper,

insert the candle and light it! You create the effect you want either by cutting out pieces of the tissue paper, or by sticking extra pieces of paper on, or just by drawing your design with

black felt tip marker.

Instructions:Lay the pieces of orange felt on top of one another. Cut away two of the corners in a curve. Cut face pieces from black felt and sew them (or stick them) to one of orange pieces. Use

blanket stitch to sew the two pieces of orange felt together. Leave the straight edge open. About 1/2 inch in from the top of the bag carefully snip small vertical holes, leaving about

1inch between them, all the way around the bag. Starting in the front of the face, thread the ribbon through the slits (a darning needle to push the ends through will help).

Pulling and tying the ribbon as a drawstring will make the pumpkin round.

Kids love any excuse to play party games - and so they should!. Even if you are not having your own Halloween party, perhaps you can get a group of friends around to dress up and play some Halloween party games? And if you are having a Halloween party, there are some great ideas here for you!

Mummy WrapMummy Wrap is a fun Halloween party game for children of all ages.Buy some cheap rolls or toilet paper and perhaps some crepe paper streamers in Halloween colours. Split the kids up into teams of two. One child will be the “mummy” and the other is in charge of wrapping up the child like a mummy...When you start playing the music the teams can start wrapping up the When you turn the music off the kids need to stop.The team whose mummy is more mummifi ed (or wrapped) wins.Older children can have even more fun if you turn the lights right down when you turn the music on - it makes it much harder and they will get the giggles!

Pick Their BrainsCook a large pot of different shaped pasta such as spirals or macaroni. Drain and cool completely. Place cooled pasta in a large plastic bowl and add a few olives. Then add some wrapped sweets like mini fun sized chocolate bars. Cover the bowl with material that you’ve cut into a decorative shape like a pumpkin or monsters head, or use a scary cloth or rubber mask that you don’t mind cutting in to. Once the bowl is covered, cut a slit which is just large enough for the children to put their hands through, no larger: they should not be able to see the contents of the bowl.Sit the kids in a circle and let them take turns digging into the bowl to find the sweets. They won’t be able to see into the bowl and the icky texture of the pasta along with the olives will feel like brains!

Halloween Graveyard HuntDecorate your garden to resemble a scary graveyard or just add lots of scary things. You can add cut out black felt bats, plastic spiders, fake web, fake tombstone, jack o lanterns and even provide scary music...Hide prizes and treats amongst the plants and decorations and let the kids go on a graveyard hunt. For older kids you can even have a disguised adult or two hiding around a spooky corner, but please don’t do this with younger children as it can really traumatise them!

Ghost BustersFirst make a collection of ghosts, or get the children to cut out their own ghosts.Now divide the players into two groups. Send one team from the room while the other team hides the ghosts. Make sure you stipulate what level of hiding is acceptable - we usually say that some part of the ghost must be visible - and whether some pieces of furniture are off-limits. The first team now returns and tries to find all the ghosts. They then get a turn to hide the ghosts.Variations:An adult hides all the ghosts and the children compete with each other to find them.Add a forfeit to the back of one or two ghosts (without necessarily telling the children!) Whoever finds those ghosts must do the forfeit before the next round of the game.Add a bonus prize to the back of one or two of the ghosts instead!

Maintain your ride!To ensure your scooter or skate board lasts, you need to make sure you maintain it.

Your bearings are the inner part of the wheels which enables a smooth ride and they need to be checked to get the most from your board or scooter.Now before you test your bearings, you want to make sure the problem isn’t dirt. Make sure all your bearings are clean, and if they’re all clean, you’re ready to test your bearings and see if there’s a problem. On a skateboard the best way to do a bearing test is the wheel roll. To do this, roll all your wheels at the

same time. If one wheel stops rolling before any of the others, you know that bearing is probably ready to be replaced. On a scooter, the easiest way to test the bearing is to remove the wheel and spin the wheel in your fi ngers. If the wheel feels clunky or makes a grinding noise it is possible the bearings will need to be replaced.To make sure your scooter is safe to ride always check the wheels bolts are tight as well as the bolts on the clamp, this will stop the bars from moving. The headset also needs to be tightened and any other bolts or clamps on your scooter.

My name is Harold and I am a Guinea Pig,

I live with my family and love being cuddled and looked after. I am very active and I love to run around and enjoy my large hutch which gives me a chance to stretch out and enables me to stand up on my back legs, which I love to do.My owners always clean out by bed and give me lots of clean hay so I can snuggle up and keep warm at night. I am a grazer and so I like to eat grass, herbs and some plants. I love dandelions and I like to munch for long periods of time and having fresh water every day is very important to me.I love having friends to play with so I share my home with Duncan, Joel and Peter. We enjoy each other’s company and love to run around together. We have several pipes in our hutch and we enjoy burrowing into these too.When my owner handles me they are always very gentle and this makes me very happy. I enjoy being petted and cuddled if it is soft and gentle.I hope you have enjoyed fi nding out about me.
