If you’re a parent you’ll know how difficult it can be to get children to eat breakfast in the morning. Whether it’s because there’s no time or the children simply aren’t hungry, the fact is 1 in 6 children unfortunately miss breakfast everyday.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it provides you with the engery, vitamins and minerals to fuel your day.A good breakfast sets you up for the day ahead, providing energy and essential vitamins and minerals to fuel your body after a night’s sleep. The government, nutritionists and the Food Standards Agency all agree on this. But in Britain today an alarming number of people still choose to skip breakfast.Scientific studies show if you skip your morning meal you, and in particular children, are statistically more likely to snack on high calorie, high fat foods mid-morning. What’s more, if you don’t eat breakfast scientists say you are unlikely to make up the nutrients missed through others meals of the day. What really concerns us though is the number of children who start the day hungry. Our research tells us everyday in Britain 190,000 children don’t eat breakfast before they leave for school. So, give your children the best start to the day with a healthy breakfast.

On Saturday 18th August, four members of the Bath Rugby Foundation’s Up&Unders team participated in the Woody’s Summer Fete on the Warminster Road. Throughout the day, children of a variety of ages and abilities participated in a number of games and activities such as tag rugby, mini assault courses, goal kicking and parachute games, all delivered and supervised by the Up&Unders coaching staff.Catt Davidson, Up&Unders Manager reports: “The day was a huge success, all of the children who took part in the Up&Unders session seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. It was refreshing to see young children enthusiastically engaging in something new.”

Once again Selwood Academy secured Wimbledon Tickets for their Year 8 tennis-loving pupils. The train journey to Wimbledon Station and the red double decker bus ride to the All England Club started the day off well. There was a noticeable change in the appearance of Wimbledon, especially the extra food outlets and the picnic areas. Wimbledon is looking more than ready for the Olympics. The pupils made the most of everything on offer. The Play Tennis area, a facility for youngsters to measure the speed of their serve, test their reactions, practise volleying and enjoy many other challenges was again a huge success - not to mention the perfect spot for a photo!Selwood were again fortunate to have tickets for Court No 1. Sharapova’s win followed by Englishman James Ward’s epic 5 sets with Mardy Fish of America was not to be missed. Nadal’s exit, all on the same day, really did make this a trip to remember. After the obligatory strawberries and cream, a train journey home, long enough to recap on the excitement of the day added to the fun.

Critchill School’s Sports Festival afternoon provided pupils with the opportunity to experience fi ve varied sporting activities and consolidate their skills whilst gaining new ones. Pupils had the opportunity to challenge their climbing abilities on the infl atable wall (pic attached), develop their hand eye coordination with Tri Golf and work as team when taking part in Multi Sports. The added bonus of sunshine made the day hugely enjoyable for all.

September 2012 sees the launch of an Olympic inspired Programme at Christ Church C of E First School and The Key Centre in Frome. The Be the Best you can Be! Programme has been developed to inspire, engage and empower young people to recognise and fulfi l their potential and to support the quest that the London 2012 Olympic Games be an inspiration to the youth of Britain and the rest of the world.

Dr David Hemery CBE, a former Olympic gold medallist, Founder of 21st Century Legacy says, “Everyone has a spark of greatness within them and through a combination of dreams and practical application they can achieve their potential, as long as they positively set their mind to it, believe in themselves and are prepared to work hard.”

The Be the Best you can Be! Programme includes a Staff Development Day, followed by the Programme Launch, where an Olympian, Paralympian or other high achiever shares their story of how success is a journey with the need to overcome inevitable setbacks. As role models, they kick start each school launch and bring the ‘achievement of dreams’ into the curriculum. The Launch is followed by further themes designed to help young people discover the skills they need to follow their dreams and to begin their own successful journey. The Programme concludes with a Celebration where all the young people and teachers share what they have learnt and support each other in pursuing their dreams and goals. The Programme participants are presented with a recognition medallion produced and sponsored by the Royal Mint, intended to encourage them to continue to work towards their goals or set new ones.

By completing the Programme young people raise their self-confi dence and self-esteem and benefi t from higher aspirations, and a clearer path to how they can realise their dreams.

Building an Educational Legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games

Sarah Bullmore Head at Christ Church First School and Manager of The Key Centre said, “I was determined that our school would be one of the schools to undertake the Be the Best you can Be! Programme as it begins to roll out nationally. The inspiration offered by Olympians, Paralympians and high achievers who strive to achieve their dreams is incredibly powerful and can really reach out and engage our young people. I am pleased to welcome David Strudwick to launch our Programme and my teachers, staff and I look forward to delivering this exciting and transformational Programme.”

Clubs and classes for school-age children are not only after school, but can run at weekends and during holidays. Are you wondering how your child might benefit by joining a club? This list is simply a starting point, but it certainly gives you 10 reasons to investigate sports and other clubs in your area for your children.

1Getting Out Many children spend a lot of time in front of the TV or playing computer games. Club’s can give children an opportunity to explore more varied and healthier activities.

2Keeping them Out of Trouble Studies show that after-school, the twilight hours are more risky to children than night-time hours. Participating in an after-school club reduces the risk of children becoming involved in things that parents would prefer them to avoid. 3

Meeting People and Making Friends Joining a club gives children a comfortable and appropriate place to meet others with similar interests. This environment can form the basis for lifelong friendships.

4Learning New Skills Children who participate in a variety of activities are introduced to new skills and are given a chance to develop them. As children realise they “can do” these things then their self-confidence grows.

Bringing the wild owls of this country to you...

This isn’t the end of the list, we are sure you could add more ideas of your own, but they are 10 great reasons to see what is out there!

10Plain Old Fashioned Fun Playing a game, camping, singing - whatever the focus, children participate because they enjoy the activities, and sometimes fun is as good a reason as any other to join a club.

5Learn Teamworking Many activities require children to work together towards achieving a common goal. Whether they are trying to win a game or complete a community service project, children learn to work as a team.

6Developing Independence By participating in clubs, young children learn to exist and thrive ‘outside of their family’. Older children learn skills and values that will carry them through to their adult lives. 7

Leadership and Responsibility Children have the opportunity to make their own decisions – they learn to lead, follow and carry their portion of responsibility.

8Civic Mindedness and Values Some organisations exist as service organisations. Others participate in community service as part of a larger scope of activities. Either way, children can get the chance to learn to look beyond themselves and experience how they can make a difference. 9

Improving Selection Prospects In addition to solid academies, employers and further education establishments like to see well-rounded applicants. Club participation demonstrated over a period of time will help to enhance any application.

The new school year is always an exciting time and sometimes a scary time, too! You can make a real difference to how your children feel about it and how quickly they settle in. Children of all ages retain more information if it is taught in a fun and exciting way. We have created the following ideas to help you to work with your children at home to develop their skills and generate an excitement around their school work.

Learning is fun! “A good education is like a savings account; the more you put into it, the richer you are.”

Hand writingTo encourage story writing fi nd a family photograph or a picture from the internet and ask your child to write a story around what they can see. It may be about a family visiting the zoo and the things they see there or even a trip to the moon. The possibilities are endless.

Time tablesHere are some rhymes to help with some times tables reminders:56 = 7X8....remember 5 6 7 8It’s great to be really sure 8x3 is 24!It’s heaven to be completely done, now 7x3 makes 21!If it adds up to 9, it is part of the 9 times table...18...27...36...45...54...63...72...81...90He ate and ate and stuck in the door, 8x8 is 64!12 = 3 x 4....remember....1 2 3 4

Learning about moneyEncourage your child to use money as soon as possible. Allow them to hand over the cash for payment in the shop and also to collect the change. Once they have been given the change, ask them which coins they have been given and how many of each etc.

The alphabetRecognition and learning through tracing - get your child used to the shapes of letters by fi nger tracing or by colouring some outline letters in.

Early learning skillsTo help your child to get used to controlling their pencil, draw a series of squiggly lines on paper and ask them to draw over them. It can be fun to draw some very basic animal fi gures and even faces and around hands and feet.

Make a special box in which to keep your best pieces of work this school year. If you have a class mascot why not take inspiration from them to make your box unique and special to this school year.

You will need: A plain box fi lePVA (white) gluePictures (can be drawings, colourings, cut-outs from comics or photographs)

Instructions:Chose some pictures to decorate the lid of the box fi le. These could be photographs of your child in school uniform, or magazine cut-outs of favourite characters, or anything else that takes your fancy. If you have any brothers or sisters, it may be an idea to add your name to the side of the box in the same way. This will make it easier to fi nd on the shelf.

Personalised File

Here is an original way to keep your pens and pencils organised - and it makes a great keepsake gift too!

You will need:An old (clean!) pair of welly boots Alphabet buttons or beads, or other decorationsWhite (PVA) glueInstructions:

Make sure your boots are sparkling clean and then set about decorating them! Our example were heavily patterned already so we just used alphabet beads to spell out “pencils” down one side, but if you start with plain boots you can really go to town, using glitter, sequins, or acrylic paint!

Boot Tidy

This pencil door hanger is an easy kids craft using craft cupboard supplies, but it looks great! Great for Back To School or anytime.

You will need:4 craft sticks (ideally coloured)Optional paintCraft foam in light brown or pink, black and any other colourDouble sided tapeSticky lettersRibbon

Using the width of the sticks as your guide cut a triangle from light brown or pink foam and a rectangle from another colour.Use double sided tape to attach the triangle to one end of the sticks and rectangle to the other. Turn over and you will see a pencil shape.Cut a tiny triangle of black and stick to the top of the triangle as the nib.Tape a loop of ribbon to the back.Add a message with sticky letters.Variation – use only 3 sticks and leave off the loop to make a bookmark.

PETS

CORNER

My name is Bertie and I am a Dachshund,

I live at home with my family and love playing with them. I know that I can be stubborn at times and don’t really like being trained but I do love having fun chasing balls and sticks.I sleep in the house but some of my dog friends sleep in kennels in their gardens but we all love our families and are very grateful for all of the love and attention they give us.We all know that having a dog as a pet is hard work and can sometimes be expensive too but we do offer loads of love in return. My owner is very careful with fl ea and tick protection for me as I love to walk in long grass and run in the woods and this can sometimes cause ticks to stick to my fur. I go to the vets regularly for my health check ups.It is best to feed us dogs a grain-free diet. While the better quality dog food may cost more, we can eat less of it since our bodies use more of what we are eating, producing less waste. Not to mention the vet bill if we develop issues from consuming a low quality food. I eat twice a day and have a meat based diet at all times, I eat at the same times every day and this helps my owner to know when I need to go for a walk too but I also love a treat every now and then when I have been well behaved.I am going to curl up in by dog basket now and have a little snooze.Bye bye

John at Garston Vets says, “As warmer weather fi nally arrives, remember the parasites affl icting our pets will be multiplying more quickly. We are

seeing the usual August fl urry of fl ea related problems, but this year has produced an exceptional number of ticks, the nymphs of which inhabit grass stalks, waiting to attach themselves to passing warm-blooded hosts. Their jagged mouthparts make removal diffi cult, so we recommend a special ‘tick hook’, which reduces the chances of leaving mouthparts behind.

However, effective products which kill ticks on contact, as well as preventing attachment are available. If your pet regularly

visits woods or grassy areas, adequate tick protection is strongly recommended.”
