Af ter spending 17 years at Hamamatsu Cast le, Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu went on to unite Japan. From being a small provincial lord, he became Shogun with supreme power over the whole country. He is a prime example of rising through the ranks. In view of his close attachment to Hamamatsu, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the modern city, the city mascot was changed, enabling Lord Ieyasu to live here again as Ieyasu-kun, the successful lord. All around town, you’ll see this inspiring figure.

During spring through summer you can have great fun digging up clams from sand under the shallow pools of water that fringe Lake Hamana.

This floral park on the shores of Lake Hamana comprises some 3,000 plant species that delight the eye. From the 1,300 flowering cherry trees to tulips, roses, and other blooms, throughout the year you can enjoy the beauty of flowers.

At Kanzanji Hot Spring, luxuriate in a spa bath while looking out over Lake Hamana.

Ladies like Mikkabi Hot Spring because it makes their skin feel smooth.

There are four hot springs around Lake Hamana: the Kanzanji hot spring, the Bentenjima hot spring, the Yuto hot spring, and the Mikkabi hot spring.

Some 4,300 trees representing 160 tropical, subtropical, and indigenous Japanese species are cultivated in this botanical park. In addition to enjoying the sight of trees in bloom, you can also pick a wide variety of seasonal fruit.

This local confectionery is famous all over Japan and has become a souvenir sought by overseas visitors. You can visit the Unagi Pie factory to see how they are made.

Here, in Japan’s museum dedicated solely to musical instruments, you can see about 1,200 instruments from all over the world. On monitors you can see videos of actual performances. Headphones are available if you want to listen to music.

Hamamatsu Museum of Musical Instruments

This museum pays tribute to Soichiro Honda, the man who created the global Honda Motor Company. The exhibits show both his character and his passion for building excellent objects and include motorcycles and engines that he made.

Home to the main production facilities of Japanese companies making pianos and other musical instruments, Hamamatsu is also known as ‘City of Music’. Including interna-tional music competitions, many events to encourage interaction through music are held.

Cars and bikes of multinational Suzuki Motor Corporation are on display in a museum that presents the company history and shows how the local situation and culture of Hamamatsu favored the development of bike and car production.

The mild climate of Hama-matsu favors mikan growing. Locally grown sweet and juicy Mikkabi and Topia mikan are famous national brands.

The most famous source of eels in Japan, Hamamatsu is synonymous with eels. Be sure to try them freshly caught.

During the winter months in Hamamatsu, wild torafugu (tiger blowfish) can be caught in the area. This delicacy of Japanese cuisine can be enjoyed both as sashimi and in nabe dishes (one-pol dishes).

Held from May 3–5 each year, the Hamamatsu Festival is famous for its kite fighting events and for the night time parade of huge, gorgeous wooden floats, which are hauled around the town. Allyear through, at Hamamatsu Festival Hall, you can view kites and floats and get a taste of festival time.

Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Hamamatsu Castle for 17 years. Due to the fact that successive lords of the castle often later advanced to higher positions of status, the castle is also referred to as Shusse-jo or "Upward Mobility Castle." In the spring, many people are attracted to this famous place for viewing flowering cherries.

Enjoy activity and relaxation at this beautiful lake, Hamamatsu’s most scenic location. There are beautiful views from points all around the lake. Light glinting off the azure water and colored reflections of the setting sun express some of its many moods. Af ter spending 17 years at Hamamatsu Cast le, Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu went on to unite Japan. From being a small provincial lord, he became Shogun with supreme power over the whole country. He is a prime example of rising through the ranks. In view of his close attachment to Hamamatsu, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the modern city, the city mascot was changed, enabling Lord Ieyasu to live here again as Ieyasu-kun, the successful lord. All around town, you’ll see this inspiring figure.
