Environmental Monitoring

Beyond virus protection. It has become almost automatic to protect

your data centre by backing up your servers, installing firewalls and virus protection, andkeeping the virus and fire protection up-to-date.

But what about more tangible threats? Doyou have hot spots in your racks? If the cooling system shuts down, how will youknow when temperatures climb out of control? Are you alerted to humidity changesor water leaks that threaten your equipment?

Planning for the unexpected is a criticaltask because there are more systems performing mission-critical functions thanever before. These systems are often deployed without the proper environmentalinfrastructure to support them. Equipmentdensity is increasing constantly, which is creating more stress on ventilation andpower.

That’s where Black Box’s environmentalmonitoring system enters the picture.

The top three IT risks:1. Environmental disruption.

The number one cause of downtime forremote locations, evironmental problems gobeyond fires and floods and affect as much as30% of a company’s mission-critical infrastructure. Cooling and power are keypoints of exposure and increase as equipmentdensity does.2. Unnecessary risk.

When systems are housed in less-than-optimal settings, or are in remoteand unsupervised locations, any error causesdowntime. Yet it’s not practical to have someone babaysitting the servers. We offermore effective ways to keep track of yourequipment.3. Sabotage.

Regardless of the probability, terrorism isnow something each of us must plan for. Yoursystems can also be bought down from withinif the proper security safeguards are not inplace.

What is an environmental monitoring system?

Environmental monitoring products enable you to actively monitor the conditionsin your rack, server room, data centre or anywhere else you need to protect critical assets. Conditions monitored include extremetemperatures, humidity, power spikes andsurges, water leaks, smoke and chemical materials. With proper environmental monitoring, you’re alerted to any conditionsthat could have an adverse effect on your mission-critical equipment. These productscan also alert you to potential damage fromhuman error, hacking or prying fingers.

Environmental monitors consist of threemain elements: a base unit, probes or sensorsand network connectivity and integration. The base units may contain one or more built-in sensors, as well as ports for hooking up external probes. Additionally, they include anEthernet port and have software for remoteconfiguration and graphing. This softwaremay also work with existing network management software, such as SNMP systems.

Features:Measurement (see chart below).

The environmental monitoring appliancedisplays the values measured by the attachedprobes, e.g. temperature, humidity, airflow, status of dry contact, door, motion detectorand other sensors.Alerting (see chart on facing page).

When the measured value exceeds thepredefined threshold, it triggers an alert: ablinking LED on the front panel, an audiblealarm, SNMP trap, SMS, e-mail etc. The environmental monitoring appliance can alsoactivate an external alarm system like a sirenor strobe light.Data collecting and graphing(see chart on facing page).

The measurements are periodically storedin the internal memory or external storagemedia and displayed as graphs.Benefits of environmental monitoring:• Reduced downtime— When things gowrong, you’re the first to know. Minimisedowntime by being alerted about conditionsthat cause damage to servers and other network devices.

Measurement Table

• Increased profits— Black Box environmental monitoring systems are easy toimplement. Also, they help you cut replacement equipment costs and redistributeyour workforce more effectively.• Increased employee satisfaction— Withbuilt-in notification features like e-mail, SMSand SNMP traps, a remote monitoring systemenables employees to better manage theirwork.

Applications:The Black Box AlertWerks II system consists

of SNMP-enabled, Web-based monitors thatalert the user to any abnormal conditions.AlertWerks II monitors multiple environmental conditions, including smoke, temperature, humidity, airflow, security andvoltage. Black Box has complete solutions fora variety of applications, including:

• Data centre monitoring• Computer room monitoring• Rackmount industrial equipment• Telecommunications• UPS/battery backup• Educational institutions• Food and beverage applications• Buildings/warehouses• Air conditioner/refrigerants/freezer monitoring• Greenhouses

SSoolluuttiioonn Profile

Staying online A leading British broadcasting company running a news and entertainment web site were concerned about the possibility of air conditioning failures and moisture within their data centre. An air conditioning failure could cause the servers to overheat and the service provided to crash.Black Box recommended the ServSensor V4P as the ideal solution. The ServSensor V4P was installedand four dual temperature and humidity sensors were placed within the cabinets of the data centre. Over a period of days, these sensors were moved around until all the hot spots had beenidentified. The dual sensors were then installed at these locations. A smoke sensor and a water sensor were added to the system, and finally a couple of airflow sensors. This gave a complete environmental solution to the customer.

A few months later the customer received an alarm from the ServSensor V4P, via e-mail, that thetemperature within a particular cabinet was increasing. Another alarm confirmed that there was noair flow within the same cabinet. The customer investigated and discovered that an air conditioningunit had just failed. An engineer was called and some of the services were switched to back upservers, enabling the web site to remain unaffected throughout, with no disruption to services.Without the notification, the entire site would have gone down inside 20 minutes.

Black Box Explains

Dry Contacts.A dry contact, also called a volt-free

contact, is a relay contact that does not supply voltage. The relay energises or de-energises when a change to its input hasoccurred. In other words, a dry contact simply detects.

The dry contacts in the ServSensor Contact provide a simple two-wire interface that can be easily adapted tothird-party sensors and devices. Becauseyou define what the open or closed condition means, dry contacts are infinitelyadaptable.

Use dry contacts to monitor alarms suchas fire alarms, burglar alarms and alarms onpower systems such as UPSs. a very common use for dry contacts is to detectwhether a cabinet door is open or closed.

Dual Temperature Humidity SensorsThe Black Box Dual Sensor has both temperature and humidity

measurement in a single sensor. This extends the capability of theServSensor to measure up to 8 temperature and 8 humidity sensingparameters, just by connecting 8 dual sensors.

Up to 2 dual sensors can be plugged into RJ-45 jacks on theServSensor Jr. and 8 sensors on the ServSensor, ServSensor V4P andServSensor Contact. Each sensor comes complete with a short CAT5cable, although you can connect the sensor using CAT5 cable up to305m (1000 feet), allowing the sensors to be positioned in hot spots.

The ServSensor will auto detect the presence of the dual sensorwhen it is plugged into the RJ-45 port, and will then display temperature and humidity. A built-in graph option is included on allServSensor systems for graphing temperature and humidity variationsat a 0.2OC resolution over a period of time.

External applications such as MRTG can then collect and graph thedata using the unique SNMP OID built in to the dual sensor.

Water SensorsThe Black Box Water Sensor is an advanced microprocessor based

design capable of detecting distilled water. Most water detectors use a technology which measures the

resistance of water. This resistance depends upon the presence of electrolytes in the water. The water in some areas varies from otherareas, therefore the resistance of the water is variable and in someareas, due to the lack of electrolytes present, cannot be measured.

Unlike resistance sensors, the Black Box Water Sensor is an exclusivedesign capable of detecting the presence of even distilled water. Thewater detector contains microprocessor controlled capacitance measuring circuitry. This is far more precise than standard commerciallyavailable water detectors which are only able to measure the resistance of water.

Air Flow SensorsThe Black Box Air Flow Sensor is designed for systems that generate

heat in the normal course of their operation, and a steady flow of air isnecessary to dissipate this heat generated. system reliability and safetycould be jeporadised if this colling air flow stops.

The air flow sensor is placed in the path of the air stream, wherethe user can monitor the status of the flowing air. The airflow sensor isnot a precision measuring instrument. This device is meant to measurethe presence or the absence of air flow. The ServSensor displays this information using a graphical display via its web interface. In additionto an on/off indication, it also graphs the analogue values over a period of time. If, for example, the fan slows down the user will begiven an indication of change over time. This may happen if the fanclose to the failure or the air filter is clogged. In addition to a web interface, an SNMP is provided for alarm/normal status and to get thecurrent analogue value. SNMP traps sent when critical. SNMP pollingvia get available. A web browser interface is also available. When analarm condition is activated the description and location of the faultcan be sent via e-mail, or a web page.

Security Sensors/ContactsThe Black Box Security/Contacts Sensor is a magnetic on/off switch,

which is used as an input to the Servsensor. Security Sensors/Contactscome in pairs. They are active switches that close when one half of thesensor is in close proximity to its mate. When the two sensor pairs aremoved apart from each other, they open. The ServSensor detects theopening and closure of the contacts, and reports the condition.

Security/Contact Sensors can be wired in series so that multiple sensors can use a single port on the ServSensor. There are no reasonable limits on the distance of the security sensors from theServSensor. The Security/Contact Sensor, with an ALARM/NORMAL indication in software, can have an unlimited number of security sensors. Security/Contact Sensors can detect the opening of doors, windows and cabinet doors etc... The SNMP interface has support foralarm or normal status. SNMP traps are sent critical. SNMP polling viathe GET command are also available. There is a Web browser interfaceavailable. When an alarm condition is activated, the description and location of the fault can be sent via e-mail.

Dry-Contact SensorsThe Black Box Dry-Contact Sensor is a simple connection to burglar

alarms, fire alarms or any application that requires monitoring by theServSensor. Dry contact sensors are user definable and can be used todetect many different inputs such as UPS status, security systems, airconditioning status etc...

These general purpose switches can be either input or output. When used as an output, they can provide up to 20 mAmps. The output voltage can be sleceted by setting the Output Level to a Low ora High. When set to Low the pin will output 0 volts. When set as ahigh, the pin will output 5 volts.

When used as an input, a switch will retain any error conditionuntil it is read via SNMP. Therefore if a switch encounters a critical condition at any time it must report that condition before it can returnto a normal state.

Input pins can be sued to detect whether or not an input switch isopen or closed. In combination with external sensors, input pins candetect whether a door or window is open or closed, if there is a waterincursion and mnay other conditions.

Serial Device Controllers• Offer access to your networks devices’ console ports as well as serial devices such as printers.

Sensors• Poll at one-second intervals.• A disconnect alarm alerts you when a Sensor is loosened.• Temperature Sensorsmeasure from -55 to +125oC to help prevent premature breakdown of equipment.

• Humidity Sensors prevent static buildup associated with low humidity or condensation caused by high humidity.

• Temperature/Humidity Sensors combine two sensors into oneand each requires only one port on a Sensor Hub.

• Temperature/Airflow Sensors each requires only one port on aSensor Hub.

• Water Sensors alert you if the sprinkler system goes off in yourdata centre.

• Security Sensorsmount on doorways, cabinet doors or windowsto detect opening or closing. A Security Sensor mounts on one sideof the opening, and a magnetic plate (included) mounts on theother side. When a sensor comes close to the plate, a switch closes, and the sensor reports that it’s closed.

• Dry-Contact Closure Sensors sense whether a switch is open orclosed. Connect them to devices such as burglar alarms, UPSs orclimate-control systems.

Do-It-Yourself A nationwide DIY store required a method of access and security for its lights out data centres. Theonly employee at each of the data centres present was a security guard, responsible for openingand locking the access gate and the front door to the building. The customer wanted a way to automate access and confirm that engineers working on site were working in the correct cabinets. The Black Box ServSensor V4P was chosen as the ideal solution. Firstly, the ServSensor Contact wasinstalled and dry-contact relays were added to each of the cabinet doors and the main data centredoor. A couple of CCTV cameras were added to the system, one at the entrance door to the datacentre, and one at the other end. These two cameras gave a good clear view of the entire data centre.

An engineer can now arrive at any time and be granted access into the car park and the main building by the security guard. Once inside the engineer can access the data centre using accesscontrol. As soon as an engineer opens the data centre door, an alarm is sent to head office who canthen check that the engineer is authorised to access the data centre. As each individual cabinetdoor is opened, another alarm is sent to head offfice, giving them a record of all cabinets accessed. The ServSensor V4P saves over 2000 video images and these are used by head office to confirm boththe identity of the engineer, and the location of the cabinets accessed. This has given the customera complete record of cabinet access, including time and date, and this is matched with the storedimages to confirm identity. This helped the customer save enormous costs on time and manpower, and provided the engineers with 24/7 access, safely and securely.
