Title: The earth observation satellite and its application(对地观测卫星及应用)
Abstract: Earth observation satellites are satellites specifically designed to observe
Earth from orbit, similar to spy satellites but intended for non-military uses such as
environmental monitoring, meteorology, map making etc.
To get a (close to) global coverage with such a relatively low orbit it has to be polar
or at least close to polar. As such a rather low orbit will have an orbital period of
roughly 100 minutes the Earth will rotate around its polar axis with about 25 deg
between successive orbits with the result that the ground track is shifted towards west
with these 25 deg in longitude.
For spacecraft carrying instruments for which an altitude of 36000 km is suitable the
Geostationary orbit is sometimes the preferred choice. From such an orbit one gets
uninterrupted coverage of more than 1/3 of the Earth. With 3 geostationary
spacecraft positioned over the equator at longitudes separated with 120 deg the
whole Earth is covered except the extreme polar regions. This type of orbit is mainly
used for meteorological satellites.

(IGRE), Eastern Michigan University.2004 Distinguished Scholarship Award.

Title: Nested Spatiotemporal Analysis of Grassland Degradation under Climate
Change and Socioeconomic Transformation
Abstract: Although it is commonly recognized that the coupled impacts of climate
change and socioeconomic transformation on ecosystems vary spatially as well as
temporally, it remains unclear how to examine the coupled impacts concurrently
cross regions and through times. This type of spatiotemporal exploration is further
confounded by multi-scales of space and multi-resolutions of time. A nested
panel-data-regression based spatiotemporal analysis will be introduced in this talk as
an innovative research framework to address spatiotemporal explorations of coupled
human and natural systems cross multi-scale-resolution space and time. Moreover,
a big data of climate change and plant community growth condition in16-day
intervals from May 8 to September 28 during 2000-2010 in Inner Mongolia of China
will be assimilated with key socioeconomic statistics during the same period through
a newly developed areal interpolation technique, the networked land patches
algorithm. The temporal dimensions of climate factors and grassland productivity
include periodical and yearly changes. The spatial scales consist of twelve plant
communities, thirty-seven administrative counties, plant-county intersections, and
policy-intervention-effectiveness regions. This multi-scale-resolution data-panel will
be analyzed to validate the aforementioned nested panel-data-regression based
spatiotemporal analysis framework and to investigate complex relationships between
vegetation growth and coupled climate change and socioeconomic transformation
from the dimensions of period, year, plant-community, county, plant-county-intersect,
policy-effectiveness-region, and plant-county-policy-effectiveness-region-intersect,
simultaneously. The quantitative findings, which reflect complex spatiotemporal
interactions between vegetation growth, its trajectory of changes, climate changes
and socioeconomic transformations, will be analyzed in alignment with the current
policies of ecosystem recovery compensation to provide scientific evidences to
support future policy recommendations for sustainable grassland utilization.

Title: Simulating the PHEV Ownership Distribution and its Impacts on Power
Grid
Abstract: This report presents a multi agent-based simulation framework for
modeling spatial distribution of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle ownership at local
residential level, discovering ―plug-in hybrid electric vehicle hot zones‖ where
ownership may quickly increase in the near future, and estimating the impacts of the
increasing plug-in hybrid electric vehicle ownership on the local electric distribution
network with different charging strategies. We use Knox County, Tennessee in US as
a case study to highlight the simulation results of the agent-based simulation
framework.

Title: Towards Reliable National Geographic State Monitoring
Abstract: National Geographic State Monitoring (NGSM) is a very important
development trend of the field of surveying, mapping and geographic
information in China in the 21st century. The level of the reliability of NGSM will
directly affect the major decision-making of the country. Thus, the proposed
research on improving the reliability of monitoring methods, process, and
results of NGSM is very crucial. The objectives of this presented research are: a)
to develop reliable methods for NGSM and b) to analyze the reliability of the
results of NGSM. Specifically, reliability analysis and quality control theory,
technologies on reliable change detection based on satellite images and reliable
comprehensive analysis are the focus issues covered by this presented research.
