GREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE NAMES WINTER AND SPRING SCHOLAR-ATHLETES 2008 INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has selected ten student-athletes as Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports for the 2007-08 season. Bellarmine’s Brooks Herrick and Katie Hickey, Drury’s Molly Carter and Chris Ijames, Missouri S&T’s Jordan Henry, Northern Kentucky’s Stephanie Isaacs, Rockhurst’s Garrett Fischer, Southern Indiana’s Kathy Wood and UIndy’s Kristi Piepenbrink and Seth Paul have been honored for their athletic and academic achievements this past academic year. The league selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American standards (3.2), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is done by each institution's Faculty Athletic Representative. Men's Basketball: Chris Ijames, Drury University Chris Ijames, a junior from Republic, Missouri, was a standout for the Panthers’ basketball team that claimed the school’s first GLVC championship in 2007-08. Ijames, a Crimionology major at Drury, averaged 11.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Panthers while posting a 3.93 semester GPA. He carries a 3.74 cumulative GPA and is a three-time member of the Academic All-GLVC Team. IJames posted a career-high 28 points in the GLVC Tournament championship game, an 89-87 overtime victory over Lewis, and was named to the All-GLVC Tournament Team. He started in 28 games for the Panthers in 2007-08 and helped them to a 25-6 overall record and 15-4 mark in GLVC play. Women’s Basketball: Molly Carter, Drury University Molly Carter, a graduating senior from Springfield, Missouri, guided the Lady Panthers to their first GLVC women’s basketball championship in 2007-08. The D-II Bulletin Third Team All-American was named the GLVC Player of the Year this past season after averaging 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.6 steals per game. She was named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2008 GLVC Basketball Tournament and is a three-time All-GLVC performer. Carter graduated with a degree in Business Administration and maintained a 3.89 cumulative GPA during her career. She is a four-time All-Academic selection and was recently awarded as the female recipient of the GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award, the league’s most prestigious honor. The 5-foot-6 guard finished her career at Drury second on the all-time scoring list with 1,570 career points. She led the league in steals (3.6) and was third in assists (4.0) in 2007-08. During his first two years at the institution, the sophomore golfer has maintained a 3.95 cumulative GPA and is a two- time Academic All-GLVC selection. Herrick was named the Bellarmine Most Valuable Golfer in 2008 after finishing 19 th at the Great Lakes Super Regional. He posted a 74.1 scoring average in 2007-08 and helped Bellarmine to a seventh-place finish at the GLVC Championships. Women’s Golf: Kristi Piepenbrink, University of Indianapolis Kristi Piepenbrink, a junior golfer from Greenwood, Indiana, is the number one golfer for the UIndy Greyhounds. She earned GLVC Player of the Year honors in 2007-08 and led UIndy to a second-place finish at the GLVC Championships at Kokopelli Golf Club in Marion, Illinois. She finished the year with a 78.4 scoring average and posted wins at the Midwest Shootout in October and at the NKU Spring Invitational in March. Piepenbrink, a Secondary Education major at UIndy, has maintained a 3.698 cumulative GPA while also excelling on the links and was named to the Academic All-GLVC Team for the third straight year. She is a three-time All-GLVC selection and earned honorable mention honors on the Duramed FUTURES Tour NGCA D-II All-American Team in 2007-08.

Men’s Tennis: Garrett Fischer, Rockhurst University Garrett Fischer, of Collinsville, Illinois, graduated from Rockhurst with a 4.00 cumulative GPA in Business Administration. He is a three-time Academic All-GLVC selection and was named the 2007-08 Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award recipient, the league’s top honor. In addition, Fischer was a member of the Helzberg School of Management Dean’s Award and received the Rockhurst University Highest Academic Honors Award. He was also a member of the Helzberg School of Management Dean’s List, the National Dean’s List and was the Academic Momentum Award Runner-Up for the Midwest Region. On the courts, the Rockhurst team captain helped Rockhurst to the championship match of the GLVC Tournament. He was 6-11 in singles play and posted a 12-5 mark in doubles in 2007-08.

Women’s Tennis: Stephanie Isaacs, Northern Kentucky University Stephanie Isaacs, a native of Waynesville, Ohio, guided the Norse to the championship match of the GLVC Tournament in 2008 and a berth into the Great Lakes Regional Tournament. The 2006-07 GLVC Co-Freshman of the Year shined in her sophomore season going 31-12 overall. She was 15-5 in singles action and 16-7 in doubles play. Isaacs was ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region in doubles and helped Northern Kentucky to an overall record of 18-5. The All-GLVC selection has maintained a 4.00 cumulative GPA in Political Science and Speech Communication and is a two-time selection on the Academic All-GLVC Team. Isaacs was also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team selection and was a member of the NKU Honor’s List and NKU All-Academic Team.

Men’s Track & Field: Jordan Henry, Missouri University of Science & Technology Jordan Henry, a junior from St. Charles, Missouri, set the Missouri S&T pole vault records in both indoor and outdoor competition in 2007-08. The Electrical Engineering major was the GLVC Champion in the pole vault at the indoor and outdoor championships and also placed in the long jump at the GLVC outdoor meet. He was a three-time GLVC “Athlete of the Week” during the year, earned All-GLVC honors in outdoor and indoor track and field and helped Missouri S&T finish 21st at the NCAA D-II Indoor Championships in 2008. Henry earned All-America honors in 2008 by finishing as the runner-up in the pole vault at the NCAA D-II Indoor Championships and fourth at the NCAA D-II Outdoor Championships. Henry, who has maintained a 3.88 cumulative GPA, is a three-time Academic All-GLVC selection and was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team.

Women’s Track & Field: Katie Hickey, Bellarmine University Katie Hickey, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, earned All-America honors at the NCAA D-II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2008. She placed fourth in the 3,000 meter run at the meet capping a stellar senior track and field campaign. Hickey finished first in the 3,000 meter run at the GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships and also placed third in the 1,500 meter run at the GLVC Outdoor Championships. She earned All-GLVC honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons and was named the Bellarmine Most Valuable Runner in indoor and outdoor track. In the classroom, Hickey maintained a 3.71 cumulative GPA in Physical Therapy and Psychology and has been accepted into the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. She is a four-time Academic All-GLVC selection and was named in the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Hickey was also honored with the Lenihan Memorial Awards in Student and Community Leadership, the Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth A. Barker Distinguished Service Award and the Msgr. Raymond J. Treece Senior Merit Award.

Baseball: Seth Paul, University of Indianapolis Seth Paul, a senior from Muncie, Indiana, earned NCBWA D-II All-American Honorable Mention honors in 2008 after leading the Greyhounds to a 37-21 record and to a berth in the GLVC Tournament. The All-GLVC First Team catcher led the league in home runs and RBIs per game and his home run and RBI total and slugging percentage are all among the top ten single-season efforts in the program’s history. He hit 15 home runs during the year, the fourth highest total in Greyhound history and was named a North Central All-Region pick. Paul, who graduated with a 3.710 cumulative GPA in Physical Education and who is currently maintaining a 4.00 cumulative GPA in his master’s program was a three-time Academic All-GLVC selection and a member of the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team.

Softball: Kathy Wood, University of Southern Indiana Kathy Wood, a senior from Lynnville, Indiana, is an Exercise Science major and first-team All-GLVC selection. She has a 3.969 cumulative GPA and posted a 4.0 semester GPA to round out her athletic career. Wood, who hit .373 with 37 runs, 14 RBIs, six doubles and seven triples, was a NFCA All-Great Lakes Region and Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region second team selection. She helped the Eagles to a 31-23 overall record and the No. 5 seed in the GLVC Tournament. Wood led the league in triples and tied for first in batting average against conference opponents (.440). In addition, Wood was the USI Screaming Eagles Pride Award winner and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team selection. She is a four-time Academic All-GLVC selection and was nominated for the USI President’s Medal.
