The Grammar-Translation Methodoriginated in Germany as a result of the

historical development of the way of

teaching and learning Latin. It had become a dead language for

oral communication five hundred

years before but continued to bestudied as an academic language.

ADVANTAGES

Easiest for teacher to use. Students have not difficulty in responding

question because the question are being

asked in their mother tongue. It is easiest way to explain meanings of words

fron sentences or phrases from one language

to another language. Students learn the new language without

contact with native speakers.

DISADVANTAGES

Students lack comprehension, only translationword for word.

Does not allow students to create meaning in

English. Students do not learn to read.

Does not improve the communicative skills of

the targeted language for the speaker orlearner.

Extensive memorization.
