  • Dividing given quantity in certain ratio

This is the most common application of ratio in everyday life like business,

partnership, geometry, formulating word problems and many more fields.

    Steps to perform such problems:

    ● If a number is divided into a:b, then one part of the number is 𝒂

    𝒂+𝒃 and the

    other is 𝒃

    𝒂+𝒃.

    ● Example:

Let’s divide 4000 Rs. In the ratio 7:3

    • The total is 7 + 3 =10

    ▪ Hence first part and second part :

    7

    10 times 4000 =

    7

    10 × 4000 = 2800Rs.

    3

    10 times 4000 =

    3

    10 × 4000 = 1200 Rs.

    ▪ Thus, we have divided Rs. 4000 in the ratio 7:3 getting contribution as

    Rs.2800 and Rs. 1200 respectively.

    31. In following problems divide the quantity given in given ratio:

    17500 in

    ratio

    5:9:6

    4500 in ratio

    5:3:1

    52000 in

    ratio

    8:5:13

    68000 in

    ratio

    4:5:8

    2500 in the

    ratio 2:3:5

  • Word problems on dividing quantities in given ratio

    32. In a certain business, initially two partners invested RS. 17000

and Rs. 13000 respectively. They wanted to share their total profit

proportional to their investment, if the profit incurred is Rs.90000,

what will be the share of each partner?

    33. Distribute 5000 Rs. In the ratio 4:1.

    34. A certain map of a rectangular field shows dimensions 5 cm and

3 cm respectively, the actual field is 50m long and 30m wide, find the

scale by which the map is drawn?

    35. Three medicines were mixed in the ratio 5:4:16, to prepare 500

liters of solution. Find the quantity of each medicine taken.

    36. The average of two numbers is 78. If one of the numbers is 54,

    find another number.

    37. Distribute 4500 rupees in the ratio 4:2:1.

    38. There was a rope 20 meters long. It has to be cut down in 3 parts

with ratio 4:5:1. Find the length of each part.
