IsyourStructureIsolated?Waterrequirementsforisolatedstructuresarelowerbecausefireisnotlikelytojumptoanearbystructureorproperty.Anisolatedstructureisdefinedasasinglestructureorgroupofupto three structures located a minimum of 50 ft. from a property line or another structure or group ofstructures. Youwill need to determinewhether your project qualifies as isolated because this affects theamountofwateryoumustprovide.

Fire‐Flow is the amount ofwater available from the nearest standard hydrant for fire suppression. It isexpressedintermsofgallonsperminute(gpm)at20poundspersquareinch(psi)residualpressure.

UseTable II‐B.1,Table II‐B.2orTable II‐B.3 (below) todetermineyour required fire‐flow,using the squarefootageandtypeofconstructionofthelargestproposedstructureinyourproject.ITISIMPORTANTTONOTEthatthequantitiesofwaterinstoragelistedonthesetablesdonotincludewaterneededforthefiresprinklersystem.Sincetherearemanyvariablesindeterminingthesprinklersystemwatersupply,wecannottellyoutheadditionalamountrequired.Pleasecontactyourfiresprinklercontractorforanevaluationoffiresprinklerdemand.

Standardhydrants(figure1)mustbelocatedwithin400ft.ofallexteriorportionsofyourproposedstructure(s).This,andthefire‐flowtables(above),willdeterminethenumberof hydrants required. Hydrants cannotbe installed less than40 ft. fromastructure to ensure safe fire ground operations, and they must be protected bybollardsifthereisanychanceofdamagebyvehiculartraffic,includingforklifts.

HydrantsmustbeinstalledincompliancewithNFPA24(adoptededition).Theymustalsobepaintedsafetyyellowandmarkedwithabluereflectivemarkerinthestreettoallowfirefighterstolocatethehydrantinthedark.Theymustbekeptvisibleandaccessibleatalltimes,andvegetationmustbekeptclearforaminimumof3feet.

Pressureforyoursystemmustbeprovidedbytankelevationoralistedfirepumpthatcansupplytherequiredfire‐flow(calculatedat20psi)tothehydrantsatthefurthestandhighestextentofthesystem.

Alternative1:Ifyourtankisprovidedwithadirecttankconnectionandcanbelocatedsuchthattheoutletiswithin400ft.(alonganapprovedpathoftravel)ofallexteriorportionsofthestructure(s)tobeprotected,thehydrantsystemandlistedfirepumpmaynotbeneeded(NOTE:alistedfirepumpmaystillberequiredforthefiresprinklersystem).ThenumberoftankoutletswillbedeterminedbyTablesII‐B.1,II‐B.2andII‐B.3,andthe tank(s) must comply with NFPA 22 (adopted edition), however paved access must be provided to alloutletsandtherearesomepracticallimitationsthatmaymakethisalternativeunsuitableforyourproject.

Alternative2:Anagricultural, industrialordomesticwellandpumpsystemmaybeapproved in lieuofalistedfirepumpifaWellYieldandPumpTestReportfromanapprovedprofessionalshowsthatboththewellandpumpcanprovidetherequiredfire‐flowanddurationyeararound,evenduringdrought.Thepumpmustbeessentialtothebusiness,anditmustprovidetherequiredflowandpressureonaregularbasissoweknowitwillbekeptingoodworkingorderatalltimes.Thereareongoingtestinganddocumentationrequirements,and the installation must comply with our standard CFMO‐W6 Installation of Non‐Listed Pumps for FireProtectionWater. Thisalternativewillbeapprovedona case‐by‐casebasisby thisoffice,and if approved,shallbe recordedonthedeedto theproperty.NOTE:WellYieldandPumpTestReportandproceduresareunderdevelopment.ContactourFireProtectionEngineerfordetails.

LANDUSEPROCESS:TheFireMarshal’sOfficereviewsplanssubmittedtothePlanningOfficeand lists requirements forwatersupply,hydrantsandfire department access (on‐site driveways and roads) as part of yourconditionsofdevelopment. Atthattimeit is importantthatyouincludethefollowinginformationonyoursiteplansubmittedtothePlanningOffice:

a. Sourceofwatersupply(e.g.,watercompany)b. Totalsquarefootageofallproposedstructurescoveredbyyourapplicationc. TypeofconstructionpertheCaliforniaBuildingCoded. Proposeduseofallstructurese. Existingandproposedhydrants(includinghydranttype)androadways

BUILDINGPERMITPROCESS:Phase I:Our LandDevelopmentDeputywill reviewplans submitted to theBuilding Inspection Office to make sure everything required during thePlanningreviewisshownontheplans(e.g.,waterandroads).IfsomethingismissingitwillbelistedontheletteryouwillreceivefromthePlanningOffice.

Phase II: Your building permit submittal will also be reviewed by ourConstructionDeputyorFireProtectionEngineerforcompliancewiththeFireandBuildingCodes.Wewillneedyoutoprovidethelocationofanyon‐sitehydrantsyouwillbeinstallingalongwithfiredepartmentaccessroutes.Ourplan check comments will be issued together with those of the Plan Check Engineer from the BuildingInspectionOffice. Corrections to the building permit plans ALWAYS require a resubmittal to the BuildingInspectionOffice.PleasedonotsubmitrevisionsdirectlytotheFireMarshal’sOffice.FIREMARSHALPERMITPROCESS:Ifyouarerequiredtoinstallon‐sitehydrantsorafirepumptosupplyfireprotectionwater,youmustobtainaFireMarshalPermitbeforeinstallation.Thesubmittalshouldbemade directly to the FireMarshal’s Office. IMPORTANT: your systemmust be installed and approvedbeforeyoucan startwith combustible construction!
