    2014 FIAF DIRECTORY

In the last couple of months the Secretariat has

been busy updating and cleaning its membershipdatabase and putting together the new editionof the FIAF Directory. It is now finally at theprinters and several copies should reach yourinstitution in the next few weeks.

    NEW FIAF WEBSITE

The Secretariat staff is working with our usualdesigner and programmer to finalize the

structure and look of the new website, whichwe hope will be ready in time for the SkopjeCongress. The main reason why we could notrespect the December 2013 deadline is that wehad underestimated the number of pages (inEnglish, French and Spanish) that needed to betransferred to the new website, but also updatedand corrected.

    FIAF ARCHIVES

Although the Secretariat could not welcomeanother student from the Brussels University(ULB) this autumn to help us with the on-goingcataloguing work on the FIAFs archival papers,we have continued to digitize key historicaldocuments and are preparing the new historicalsection of the new website, which will makethese digitized documents available online laterthis year.

We also welcomed several researchers in theoffice, and are lending several documents tothe Cinmathque franaise for their ambitiousexhibition on Henri Langlois in 2014.

    06News from the Commissions

    TECHNICAL COMMISSION (TC)

In November, David Wlash attended theAMIA Conference in the USA and took part inthe opening plenary session on the Future ofFilm Stock for Preservation (with many thanksto AMIA and FIAF in particular Rachael Stoeltjefrom our own EC who was instrumental in settingup this session and ensuring David Walshsattendance). At this panel, a representative fromKodak asserted their continued commitment tofilm stock production, while David presented theresults of FIAFs films stock survey and outlined

possible strategies for film preservation in thecurrent and future climate. David hopes to continueto explore this strand at the FIAF Congress in Skopje, both in the TC workshop and with colleagues in theFuture of Film Archives (FOFA) group.

A separate session on videotape at this extremelystimulating conference served to remind ushow rapidly time is running out for preservingvideotape. It is clear that for very many archives(my guess is the majority), it is already too late to

save all the videotapes in their collections becauseof the expectation that videotape machineobsolescence will outrun any feasible timescalefor digitisation. This may not be a central issuefor many FIAF archives, but we all have at leastsome videotapes to preserve, so the messageis: if you havent already started digitising yourvideotape, then start right now that way youmay not lose too much of your collection. Formore information, see the paper on the Costof Inaction here http://www.avpreserve.com/avpsresources/papers-and-presentations/.

The technical web links promised in the last FBOshould be online in the next few weeks. Please dolook at these and contact the TC if you have anysuggestions for additions.
