Chapter 4

Sudden Danger

The next day, Detective Sanchez got up before the

sun. He grabbed a mug of hot coffee and left for the

office. The streets were empty and the shops were still

closed. Detective Sanchez liked this time of day.

At the office, Detective Sanchez sat at his desk

and sipped his coffee. Suddenly, the phone rang. He

jumped; the phone never rang before eight.

“Ms. Raven will be frantic about her cat Pepper,”

Judy said. “What are we going to tell her?”

Detective Sanchez said calmly, “Don’t worry,

Judy. I will go over to her house and explain what

happened last night. I need you and Hobo to go to

school and act like everything is OK. Can you do

that?”

Judy complained, “Pablo, not being able to tell

my teachers about the incident will make for a very

long school day.”

“I understand, but it will help me a lot,” Detective

Sanchez said. “I need more time to make a plan on

how to proceed in this investigation. We must

consider the dangers that face us.”

Judy agreed, thanked Detective Sanchez for his

advice, and then hung up the phone.

Judy felt grumpy as she got ready for school. But

Hobo came up to her and wiggled his ears. Judy

grinned. She said, “I’m lucky to have you for a pal,

Hobo.”

They left for school. The rain had stopped, but it

was overcast.

The school day seemed extra long. Hobo often

looked at Judy, and he could tell that she was

distracted. Finally their last class was over. As they

started for home, Hobo said to Judy, “Checkers! Let’s

play checkers while we wait for Pablo’s call.”

Over the past year, Judy had spent time teaching

Hobo how to play the game. Last month, Hobo beat

Judy for the first time.

Judy said, “First one home gets to set up the

checkers.”

They both dashed across the schoolyard. Hobo

beat Judy to their front gate by several seconds. He

quickly ran into the house and grabbed the

checkerboard and a bag of checkers from the closet.

“I’m going to win the game,” he said as Judy sat

next to him.

After playing three games, Judy hopped up and

turned on the radio. Suddenly, there was a crack of

thunder. Judy screeched and Hobo jumped.

“Gosh, I wasn’t expecting that,” Judy said.

“That was scary,” Hobo added. Just then, the

phone rang. Hobo grabbed the phone and gave it to

Judy.

“Judy, this is Pablo.”

“Hi, Pablo,” Judy said, as she pressed the

speakerphone button.

Detective Sanchez asked, “Can you and Hobo

help me tonight?”

“Yes, sir!” Hobo yelled.

Detective Sanchez chuckled. He added, “Hi,

Hobo. I’m glad that you are listening. This is my plan.

Tonight, we will switch locations. I will watch the

area next to the field. Both of you will check on the

area that I covered last night.”

Judy glanced at Hobo, who was nodding his head

up and down. “We’ll be there,” she agreed.

When she had hung up the phone, Judy said to

Hobo, “Let’s get ready!”

They rushed to the closet and put on their

raincoats and boots. Hobo opened the front door and

stuck out his hand. It had begun to drizzle. He turned

to Judy and said, “Umbrellas!”

Grabbing the umbrellas, they ran outside….
