In the past, Hong Kong education system follows the UK system. Since Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997, the education system taught in local schools has undergone a series of changes. While some of these changes have reflected different language of instruction policies, there have also been changes to the senior secondary curriculum. The new “3+3+4” system introduces a new academic structure with a three-year junior secondary, a three-year senior secondary and four-year undergraduate academic education was brought in at the beginning of the 2009/10 academic year is now more in line with those found in China and even the USA than the UK system. All universities in Hong Kong will migrate from the current three-year British education system to a four-year system.

Stimulus

In a large country with a population of 1.3 billion, China has universalized nine-year free compulsory education both in urban and rural areas, which means all students are required to attend school at least nine years. Students have to complete both the primary school programme and the junior middle school programme.

Higher education is only for those students who have passed examinations of all levels. Students must pass the entrance examination for senior middle school or middle level technical schools. After two, three or four years, they have to go through the entrance examination for admission to universities.
