PRINCIPAL’S PEN Tuesday 1st December 2015

Welcome to week 4.

Principal Travels.

Last week I travelled to Townsville to attend the ‘Age Appropriate Pedagogies in Early

Education’. Workshop that was presented specifically for all principals in our region.

Education Queensland funded Griffith University to conduct a pilot project supporting

Queensland schools to use evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning in the early

years. Principals in the North Queensland Region will be leading the adoption of the findings of

this project in our schools.

It is exciting to have the opportunity to be closely connected to this practical, class room based

research project as there will be obvious positives for our young learners. The key focus in

2016 is Prep Class.

Great things happening in Senior School at Cloncurry State School P-12.

Congratulations to our school captains Emma-Jade and Vinnie who have taken to their

leadership role with gusto and have been busy creating ways to connect our seniors with the

remainder of the student body. I think there might be a few class challenges coming our way...

Welcome back to our Year 11 students who travelled to Charters Towers and Townsville last

week for the Annual Yr 11 School Leaders ’ Experience.

Reading Groups

Reading groups began in earnest at the beginning of Week 2. Teachers and aides are

implementing a 4 lesson approach across Prep to Year 6 and a 3 lesson approach across Years

7&8. Students are very aware of their current levels and their learning goals. Parents are

encouraged to discuss the reading program at home and connect with class teachers regarding

student progress.

Master Teacher.

Jo Tanzer, our Master Teacher based in Townsville, will be visiting again next week. Jo travels

to Cloncurry State School P-12 every third week to work alongside teachers and students.

Classroom Walkthroughs.

As Mr Baillie and I conduct daily walkthroughs in all classrooms, it is great to see students

actively engaged with learning and able to demonstrate what is being taught. The Learning

Walls in classrooms are growing. These strategies are certainly assisting to maintain the focus

on the importance of learning to be capable and fluent readers of text. If you can read you can

SCHOOL NEWS AROUND THE CLASSROOMS

Ii and Pp were our focus letters/initial sounds last week. Children enjoyed learning to write, say and identify the new letters and sounds in our classroom environment. Numeracy lessons developed number knowledge and children practised sequencing numerals from 1-20 and matching accompanying quantities on a number line. Homework folders were sent home on Friday. These activities are designed to build on from our learning in the classroom and I would appreciate if folders can be returned each Thursday for monitoring and changeover. Congratulations to our award recipients for the fortnight; Justin Herbert and Jaylah Arthur for working diligently during reading groups. Mrs Nicole Jonkers

This week in Rainbow B, the students are practising their speech skills for their oral presentation coming up. They are learning to use eye contact, check their volume level and speak clearly. In Maths the students are learning addition. The class are using building blocks and the Part Part Whole model to support their learning. Miss Fleur Hiscock

This week in English we have still been focussing on changing a poem but keeping the same number of syllables in each line and keeping the rhythm the same. We have started working on the second half of the poem “Five little owls.” In Maths we have been looking at number stories. When we were doing our number stories students had to draw a matching picture and identify the ‘parts’ and the ‘wholes’ of the stories. They are flying through this.

Have a great week! Miss Rachel Rozynski

Hello again from the Green Team. This week we are finalising our

learning to begin our assessment next week. In Maths we have been

focusing on counting in different sequences up to 1000 on number

lines. In English we have been learning more about evaluative language,

specifically adverbs. Celebrations and commemorations have been the

focus in History, therefore we have been learning about ANZAC day,

New Year’s Eve and Australia Day. I’m very impressed with the learning

and enthusiasm in the class.

Miss Sharni Hall

This week in Blue Class we have been looking at the structure of narratives as we head into the planning stage of our assessment. Students are starting to come up with some clever tricks that the Twits can play on each other. In maths we have been looking at doing standard and non-standard partitioning of numbers. We have also been studying maps and scales in Geography. It’s a busy time in Blue Class! Miss Kelly Rozynski

Another week has flown by and there has been hardly enough time to swat away the Moths and Flies in the classroom with all of the work we have been doing! In science we have been practicing our poster making abilities as we had a go at drawing and labelling different animals and their structural and behavioural adaptations. We have also been collecting numerical and categorical data about Red Class. Cherries have been the big winner as that is what was voted as being Red Class’ favourite fruit! Look forward to another fun week in the red room.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS

Here we are in Orange Class working steadily to ensure we have deep understanding

and high intellectual quality in our learning. In English we have revised different

spelling generalisations regarding adding ‘ing’ to words of differing patterns and how to

make a word plural. We continue to develop our personal ideas for the theme of our

short story and are working hard to master the understanding and skills we need to

build a short story, including a variety of sentence structures. In Maths we are revising

and consolidating our addition, subtraction and multiplication number facts, and are

looking at the purpose, construction and comparison of graphs and tables.

Ms Lizzie Keim

This year Purple, Green, Blue and Red Classes are having one lesson a week in the Science Lab with Miss Drenkhahn. We have lots of cool experiments and fun learning planned. This term Purple Class are learning all about materials, Green Class are learning about living, not living and once living, Blue Class are learning about weathering and Red Class are learning about Adaptation.

Purple Class: We are learning about different materials and what they are made of; wood, plastic, metal or other. They are doing experiments to test strength, durability and water resistant to understand why things are made from certain materials.

Miss Peta

READING Groups are in full swing across Years 7 & 8 and students are enjoying engaging with text

at a range of different levels. Please encourage students to be reading as often as possible and also reading

out aloud. Perhaps there are younger siblings they can read with? We also encourage the use of our town

library. It is well resourced and a relaxing, cool place to go.

Baileigh Harrison: I am enjoying being able to answer questions about the text with a partner. It is

great that we get more time to read now and engage with the text for 3 days. It is amazing how much

vocabulary we learn and how important it is to the meaning.

SCIENCE:

Year 8: Comparing different materials for heat resistance.

Jamie Wheeler: The lab is a great place for conducting experiments. It is a lot of fun being able

to burn things in a safe place.

Year 7: Experimenting with different separation techniques. One group looked at evaporation

and discovered that you can actually reclaim a teaspoon of salt once it has been dissolved in water.

Another group were very hands-on and made a Solar Still to reclaim clean water.

Geoff Silver: “Wow, the salt has crystallised”.

ITD 7: This week we will continue to build our wooden toy truck. Students have the opportunity to shape wooden parts of the truck with files and saws.

What a great week of learning in JUNIOR SECONDARY.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS

ITD 9/10 Continuing with the building of the basketball hoop, students will shape and design the basketball hoop and stand, with files, saws and drills.

Graphics 9/10 Students will continue to develop their skills in orthographic drawing. Going from 3D to 2D will be introduced to students.

9/10 History

Students will be investigating child labour during the Industrial Revolution this week. During classroom learning students

will develop an understanding of what life would have been like as a child during that period in time. Students will receive

their assessment tasks this week and will begin planning what they wish to perform the research task on.

9/10 Maths

We are coming to the end of the learning period of this first unit and are about to get stuck into the practice and revision

phase. Students will sit their first exam in the coming week, assessing them on the content they learnt in the first 4 weeks of

the year.

9/10 Science Our students have been working on their assessment task in class and last week Miss D’s class performed their experiment with our new pH and Conductivity probe. All students demonstrated safety in the lab and it was great to see them get to work with a piece of equipment used in labs across Australia today. What did we learn? The saltier the water, the more electrical conductivity it has!

Furnishing Studies 11/12 Students continue to build their table. They are developing and refining their skills in the use of hand and

power tools. They are also learning about project management and the sequence of design and build.

Year 11 Leadership Camp

Fourteen year 11 students travelled to Charters Towers last week for their

leadership camp. It was a fantastic week that allowed the lucky students who

attended the chance to develop important leadership skills and mature into the

leaders of our school community. The five day long camp challenged the

students, who had to take themselves out of their comfort zones to complete a

range of different activities. The high ropes course is a prime example of this,

forcing brave students (and a terrified Mr Bailey) up old telephone poles only

to walk across a thin rope. Not only were students forced to face their fear of

heights, they also were given great responsibility while on the ground to

ensure the participants in the air were safe and brought back down to Earth in

one piece. The coming days saw students try their hand at archery as well as

get involved in a range of leadership building activities held at the

PCYC. On Thursday we were lucky enough to spend the day in Townsville where we spent a

relaxing day shopping and swimming at the strand. After a fantastic week away it’s safe to say

everyone was ready for the long journey back to Cloncurry (or more accurately back to our

beds and air-conditioning). The students who attended the camp should be commended on

their level of participation and the respect they showed at all times. They represented

themselves in true form as great leaders of our school community. Mr Matt Bailey
